To stream nature footage in 4K at 60 fps without HDR washout, make sure the camera really outputs HDR in PQ or HLG, configure a compatible hardware HEVC encoder to match it, and verify the result on an HDR-capable playback device. YouTube’s OBS guidance specifies Main 10, P010, HDR enabled, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. Its Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors, so a washed-out-looking preview alone does not prove the broadcast is wrong.
What you need before setting up
HDR is an end-to-end match between the captured video, encoder, color signaling, YouTube ingest, and viewer’s display. A camera menu label saying “HDR” is not enough: check the camera manual to confirm that its video output uses PQ or HLG, the HDR transfer standards YouTube supports for live video. YouTube recommends HLG in its OBS instructions, but PQ is also supported; use the standard your source actually produces rather than choosing one universally. YouTube’s live HDR guidance describes the supported workflow.
- A camera or other source producing genuine HDR in PQ or HLG.
- A compatible hardware HEVC encoder that supports 10-bit HDR encoding.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the selected bitrate.
- An HDR-capable device for checking the actual stream playback.
OBS 30.1 or later is the minimum version identified in YouTube’s instructions. The exact encoder options available depend on your hardware and OBS build.
Configure OBS for the source’s HDR standard
- Confirm the source mode. Check the camera’s manual and output settings for PQ or HLG. Record which one it uses; do not infer the transfer standard from a generic HDR label.
- Select a compatible hardware encoder. In OBS output/streaming settings, choose a hardware HEVC encoder and its Main 10 profile, enable HDR, and select P010 (4:2:0), following YouTube’s OBS instructions. Option names and their locations can differ by encoder.
- Set the color space to match. Use Rec. 2100 PQ if the source is PQ, or Rec. 2100 HLG if it is HLG. The documented signaling uses BT.2020 color primaries and a BT.2020 non-constant-luminance matrix, with the matching PQ or HLG transfer. Keep the source and encoder aligned; metadata cannot turn SDR footage into genuine HDR.
- Choose the documented ingest path. YouTube’s HDR instructions describe OBS setup for RTMPS and HLS and give additional HLS requirements for compatible hardware encoders. Use the stream-key and protocol instructions for your chosen encoder and route. Do not assume every third-party encoder supports both protocols.
Incorrect HDR grading or metadata can produce incorrect results. YouTube’s HDR upload documentation discusses color metadata and the effects of incorrect HDR handling; it is useful context, but it is not a complete live-stream troubleshooting guide. YouTube’s HDR video guidance explains the relevant color concepts.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set 4K60 resolution, bitrate, and keyframes
Set the output to 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, then choose a bitrate that both fits YouTube’s encoder guidance for your codec and remains stable on your upload connection. YouTube’s current guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, gives the following 4K/2160p-at-60-fps figures:
| Ingest codec | YouTube bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| H.264 | 35 Mbps recommended |
| AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum |
These codec figures come from YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table. In general, set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval must not exceed 4 seconds. A bitrate within a published range is not a guarantee of a stable stream: your sustained upload capacity must also support it.

At 4K, YouTube does not offer low-latency optimization; 4K streams use normal latency. Plan your monitoring and any interaction with viewers around that constraint.
Test the stream and verify HDR in playback
- Run a controlled test before the broadcast. Use a private, unlisted, or otherwise controlled stream and include motion and audio representative of the real nature footage. Review YouTube’s stream-health information while it is running.
- Watch on an HDR-capable screen or device. Check the actual playback and the quality menu for an HDR badge or option. The Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors and is not a reliable check of HDR appearance.
- Check what viewers’ devices receive. Supported devices can play HDR; viewers on devices that do not support HDR receive SDR. A difference between those viewing conditions does not by itself show that the HDR encode is washed out.
- Confirm the encode before changing color settings. If the HDR-capable playback looks wrong, verify that the source and encoder use the same PQ or HLG mode and that the primaries, transfer, and matrix match the documented signaling.

Troubleshoot a washed-out or unstable picture
| What you notice | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The Live Control Room preview looks washed out. | The preview does not display HDR colors. | Check the stream on an HDR-capable playback device and look for the HDR badge or option before changing the grade. |
| HDR playback looks washed out or otherwise incorrect. | Whether the source and encoder agree on PQ versus HLG, and whether the BT.2020 primaries and matrix and transfer signaling are correct. | Match the encoder settings to the camera’s actual output. Do not use metadata to compensate for a source or encoder mismatch. |
| Some viewers see HDR while others see SDR. | Whether each playback device supports HDR. | Test on a supported HDR device; YouTube provides SDR to viewers on unsupported devices. |
| The stream drops frames or loses stability. | Whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate and whether YouTube reports a stream-health issue. | Test at the intended resolution and bitrate before going live. Choose a codec-appropriate bitrate that fits stable upload capacity, rather than relying on a peak speed reading. |
| The stream does not ingest as expected. | The encoder’s support for the selected RTMPS or HLS route, and the route-specific stream-key and protocol setup. | Follow the setup for the specific encoder and route; YouTube documents different HLS requirements for compatible hardware encoders. |
YouTube’s published live technical guidance does not establish a complete live-specific fault tree for washout. The practical first checks are whether playback is genuinely HDR and whether the source, encoder, and color signaling agree.
