Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Add the recording to OBS, connect OBS to a scheduled YouTube Live event with its stream URL and key, then start the encoder and complete the go-live step in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Synology’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature is for live camera streams, not playing a recorded sermon file.
What you need for the workflow
- A completed sermon recording stored on the NAS.
- A computer running OBS that can read the recording from the NAS share. This network-share arrangement is a practical setup, not an end-to-end Synology-validated recipe.
- A YouTube account with access to schedule and start a live stream.
- A reliable internet connection from the computer running OBS for the duration of the stream.
The NAS holds the file; OBS on the computer plays and encodes it for YouTube. The specific NAS model, DSM version, file format, computer, and available upload bandwidth can affect your setup, so test with your own equipment before relying on it for a service.
Prepare the sermon recording
- Confirm the recording is complete and plays correctly.
- From the OBS computer, open the NAS share and check that you can read the file. If it is not accessible, resolve the share permissions or network connection before configuring OBS.
- Keep the computer connected to the network share and powered on throughout the stream. OBS must be able to read the video as it plays.
Add the sermon to OBS
For one recording
- In OBS, create or select the scene you will use for the sermon.
- Under Sources, add a Media Source and select the sermon file from the NAS share.
- Set the source to fit the canvas as intended. Check the preview for cropping, letterboxing, and aspect ratio.
- Enable Loop if you want the sermon to repeat after it ends. Leave it off if the recording should play once.
For a playlist of recordings
- Install VLC on the OBS computer.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and create the playlist from the recordings on the NAS share.
- Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat.
- Use a VLC installation that matches OBS’s architecture; OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
OBS documents Media Source playback and looping, and VLC Video playlist looping. The available documentation does not establish that every NAS model or video file will perform identically, so verify playback with your actual setup.
Schedule and start the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and schedule a live stream in the Live Control Room. Choose the audience, title, visibility, and timing appropriate to your church’s service.
- In the stream’s encoder settings, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the YouTube service, and enter the server URL and stream key if prompted. Keep the key private: it authorizes an encoder to send video to the stream.
- Start streaming in OBS. Check that the preview appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then use its go-live control for the scheduled event as required.
- When the service is finished, end the stream in the Live Control Room and stop sending from OBS.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That is useful for a service-length broadcast, but do not assume a longer stream will be archived automatically.

Test before the service
Run a private or unlisted test using the intended YouTube account and equipment. Confirm the video starts at the expected point, fills the frame appropriately, and has audible sermon audio. Check that playback behaves correctly at the end of the file or playlist and that the YouTube Live Control Room receives the preview before the public service.
What Synology Surveillance Station does—and does not document
Synology’s Live Broadcast instructions for Surveillance Station describe sending a live camera stream to YouTube. The setup uses a selected camera and stream profile, a YouTube RTMP path and key, and H.264 support. They do not describe choosing a stored sermon recording on the NAS and playing it as a YouTube broadcast. Surveillance Station is video-management software for Synology systems, but that general description does not establish that a particular NAS model or package can encode and stream recorded files without a separate computer.

- Supports drives on the model's official compatibility list
- Up to 522/565 MB/s sequential read/write throughput supports stable data transfers.

- Leverage built-in file and photo management, data protection, virtualization, and surveillance solutions.
- Backed by Synology's 3-year limited hardware warranty.
Choose the right approach for the broadcast
| Need | Approach | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| One sermon, played once or repeated | OBS Media Source | The OBS computer must remain on and able to read the NAS file. |
| A sequence of sermons | OBS VLC Video playlist | VLC must be installed and match OBS’s architecture; configure playlist looping if needed. |
| A scheduled service broadcast | OBS encoder plus YouTube Live Control Room | Start the encoder and complete the Live Control Room go-live step. |
| Unattended, continuous prerecorded programming | Consider a cloud-based YouTube streaming service such as StreamNeo | It is a different workflow from an attended OBS session; verify the service and schedule suit your church. |
Troubleshooting
OBS cannot find or play the recording
Check that the computer can open the NAS share and that the file path in the Media Source or VLC playlist points to the accessible location. If the share disconnects or permissions change, OBS may lose access during playback.
YouTube does not show the OBS preview
Verify that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the scheduled event, that the key was copied correctly, and that OBS has started sending. Check the Live Control Room for its connection status before using the go-live control.

The image is cropped or has empty space
Inspect the OBS preview and adjust the source fit or scene layout to suit the recording’s aspect ratio. Test the exact scene that will be used for the service rather than assuming the file fills the canvas correctly.
The sermon repeats or stops unexpectedly
For a single file, check the Media Source’s Loop setting. For multiple files, check the VLC Video source’s playlist and Loop Playlist setting, and confirm VLC is installed with the same architecture as OBS.
