Why YouTube Live Redirect Can End Before the Next Stream Starts

Live Redirect moves viewers when the source ends; it does not guarantee they will wait on that page until an upcoming destination goes live.

YouTube Live Redirect hands viewers off when the source stream or Premiere ends; it does not promise to keep them on the finished broadcast until a scheduled destination starts. If the destination is still upcoming, viewers may reach it before it is live. YouTube recommends allowing a few seconds for the screen to reload, and viewers with autoplay disabled must click play.

What Live Redirect does when the source ends

Live Redirect is an end-of-stream handoff. YouTube’s Help instructions and its May 3, 2022 announcement say autoplay moves viewers to the live stream or Premiere selected in the source stream’s Redirect setting after the source ends. YouTube describes the destination as potentially active or upcoming; it does not say the source remains open as a waiting room until an upcoming broadcast begins. (YouTube Help: Live Redirect; TeamYouTube announcement)

That means two events can be separated in time: first, the source ends and the handoff occurs; later, the selected destination begins. During the gap, the viewer’s screen may reload. YouTube advises viewers to wait a few seconds, but its published instructions do not guarantee a particular holding screen or exactly what every device displays while an upcoming destination is not yet live. (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings)

Check these settings if the handoff seems to stop

  1. Verify the source’s selected destination. In YouTube Studio, go to Content, then Live. Edit the source video, open Customization, and inspect Redirect. Confirm that the intended live stream or Premiere is selected. (YouTube Help: Live Redirect)
  2. Check the destination’s status and type. YouTube’s announcement describes redirects to active or upcoming live streams and upcoming Premieres. An upcoming destination may not have begun broadcasting at the time viewers arrive. (TeamYouTube announcement)
  3. Confirm the receiving channel allows the redirect. For a destination on another channel, that channel must permit redirects from the sender. YouTube describes options for subscribed channels, all channels, or specifically approved channels; the subscribed-channel default depends on public subscriptions. (YouTube Help: Live Redirect)
  4. Allow the reload to finish. Tell viewers to wait a few seconds. YouTube’s stream-settings guidance gives approximately two seconds as a guideline, not a guarantee for every device or connection. (YouTube Help: Live Redirect; YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings)
  5. Check autoplay on the viewer’s device. If autoplay is turned off, the viewer must manually click play after the handoff. (TeamYouTube announcement)
  6. Check sender eligibility. YouTube lists more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes as requirements for creators sending a redirect. (YouTube Help: Live Redirect)

How to distinguish a timing gap from a failed redirect

First establish whether the selected destination was already live when the source ended. If it was upcoming, viewers reaching it before its start is consistent with the documented handoff behavior; YouTube does not describe a guaranteed wait on the source page. If the destination was active, check the selected destination, receiving-channel permission, reload, and autoplay settings above.

The official guidance explains intended behavior, not a universal cause for every apparent failure. If the problem persists, note the viewer’s device, YouTube app or browser, autoplay setting, destination status, and whether a redirect confirmation appeared. Those details help distinguish a destination-timing issue from a device-specific problem without assuming a single cause.
