How to Fix Dropped Frames in a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Stream on BSNL Broadband

Check YouTube’s stream-health warnings, verify 4K60 encoder settings, and test sustained upload before changing your BSNL connection or lowering stream quality.

Start with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health message and your encoder settings; don’t assume BSNL is at fault. For a 4K/2160p60 stream, YouTube’s recommended video bitrate is 35 Mbps with AV1 or H.265, and 50 Mbps with H.264. Those are encoder bitrate recommendations—not proof that a broadband plan or a particular line can sustain the stream. Test your actual connection under realistic conditions, then reduce the stream’s bitrate or output target if it cannot remain stable.

1. Find out what YouTube is reporting

Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the stream-health status and any warning or error details. Note whether the message points to dropped frames, an unstable bitrate, or an encoder setting such as frame rate, codec, or keyframe frequency. These can have different causes: a configuration warning is not, by itself, evidence of a broadband fault.

Keep the health view open during a test stream. Record the warning and when it appears, rather than relying only on how the preview looks. That gives you a specific setting or connection condition to investigate.

2. Check the encoder settings for 4K60

Compare your encoder’s output with YouTube’s guidance before changing the network or buying equipment. For 4K/2160p at 60 frames per second, YouTube recommends the following video bitrates:

Video codec YouTube recommended video bitrate for 4K/2160p60
AV1 35 Mbps
H.265 (HEVC) 35 Mbps
H.264 50 Mbps

These figures concern the encoded video stream. They do not guarantee that your upload connection can sustain that rate continuously, and they do not establish what any specific BSNL plan or line can deliver. Leave headroom for a connection that varies; a momentary speed-test result at or above the target is not proof of sustained stability.

Configuration checklist

  • Resolution and frame rate: Confirm that the encoder is actually set to the intended 4K/2160p and 60 fps output. If stream health identifies a frame-rate issue, investigate this setting first.
  • Codec and bitrate: YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with support for frame rates up to 60 fps. Set the bitrate for the codec and output you selected; the 4K60 recommendations are listed above.
  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Protocol: Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS.
  • Stream destination: Verify that the encoder is sending to the intended YouTube event or stream using the correct stream key. Do not expose the key publicly; if you think it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.

3. Test the upload connection as you will use it

  1. Use the same broadband connection and encoder setup that you plan to use for the live stream. YouTube recommends testing before the event and says to run a speed test to check upload bitrate.
  2. Make the test representative. Include the sort of audio and motion your documentary or program contains, and test at a time and with household upload activity similar to the planned broadcast. A quiet test can miss problems that occur during a busier session.
  3. Monitor both the connection and YouTube’s stream health. Note the encoder’s configured bitrate, the measured upload result, when instability occurs, and the exact health warning. A short speed test is useful, but cannot establish that the connection will sustain the target throughout a longer stream.
  4. Compare wired and Wi-Fi connections if practical. An Ethernet test can help isolate local Wi-Fi as a possible source of trouble. It does not prove that a cable will resolve congestion, an unstable line, or limited ISP capacity.

4. Lower the target if the connection cannot hold it

If the connection does not reliably sustain the chosen output bitrate, reduce the bitrate and retest. If instability remains, try a lower resolution or frame rate and test again with similar motion, audio, and household network use. Keep Live Control Room’s stream-health messages visible so you can tell whether the change addressed the reported problem.

There is no universally correct fallback for a particular BSNL subscriber: the suitable setting depends on measured, sustained performance at that location and time. Keep 4K60 only if your test supports the selected bitrate reliably; the codec’s lower recommended bitrate may help, but does not ensure the line can carry it.

5. Troubleshoot by symptom

What you see What to check next
YouTube reports an encoder configuration problem Use the warning to inspect the relevant setting: bitrate, frame rate, codec, or keyframe interval. Confirm CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and a codec supported by YouTube.
Upload or bitrate appears unstable Repeat a representative test, note the configured bitrate and measured upload result, and reduce the output bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Retest before restoring a higher target.
Wi-Fi performs inconsistently If available, compare with a wired Ethernet test under similar conditions. Treat a better wired result as a clue about the local wireless connection, not proof that every remaining problem is fixed.
Problems persist on a wired test Save the test times, upload results, encoder bitrate and YouTube health messages. Share those details with BSNL support so the issue can be investigated against your connection; no particular BSNL plan or local line condition can be inferred from the stream warning alone.
