To reduce the church’s data use, lower the bitrate and, if needed, the resolution sent from its encoder to YouTube. Test 480p30 and 720p30, then use the lowest setting that keeps the preacher and any scripture or lyrics legible. For viewers on Android, YouTube’s Data saver setting can reduce playback quality on their own devices. These are separate controls: the church’s upload bitrate does not tell you exactly how much data each viewer will use.
What uses data in a 24/7 stream?
The church’s internet connection carries the live feed from its encoder to YouTube. A steady, lower outgoing bitrate means less stream payload sent over time. YouTube then transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple formats for viewers, so an individual viewer’s data use depends on the rendition they receive and how long they watch—not simply the church’s upload bitrate. For an always-on sermon stream, reducing resolution and bitrate at the source is the clearest way to reduce the church’s outgoing traffic. Viewer quality settings help viewers manage their own mobile data; they do not reduce what the church sends to YouTube.
Lower the encoder bitrate without sacrificing what viewers need to see
YouTube’s current H.264 guidance gives these figures for incoming live feeds. The minimum is not a guarantee of good picture quality or a stable stream.

These are encoder recommendations for the feed arriving at YouTube, not a promise of the exact quality every viewer will receive. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) for RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings. Check the recommendations for your encoder and stream configuration in YouTube’s live encoder settings guide.
Test 480p30 and 720p30 in the real camera framing
- In the encoder you already use, set the output to 480p30 and choose a bitrate within YouTube’s guidance. Check that the encoder is using CBR for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Run a controlled test with representative sermon audio, movement, lighting and camera framing. Review the event on a phone and on the larger screens your congregation commonly uses.
- Check that faces, gestures, the pulpit and any displayed scripture or lyrics remain understandable. If text or details are too soft at 480p30, test 720p30.
- After choosing a setting, monitor stream health and actual network use over a representative period before treating a calculation as a data forecast.
A mostly fixed camera may work acceptably at a lower frame rate than fast-moving footage, but there is no single official setting for every church. The right choice depends on what the stream shows and what viewers need to read.

Check upload capacity and stream health
A lower bitrate can reduce outgoing traffic, but the connection still needs enough capacity to carry the stream reliably. YouTube advises leaving about 20% bandwidth headroom above the combined bitrate of the primary and any backup feed. Check outbound upload capacity rather than relying on download speed, and test before depending on a setting for a continuous broadcast. [YouTube streaming tips]
- Include a backup feed in the bandwidth calculation if one is running; it also contributes to data use.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health during the test and check audio and video on mobile.
- For a 24/7 channel, make bitrate or resolution changes during a controlled test, then observe the stream over a representative period.
- Use router or service-level usage figures to assess actual network consumption. Protocol overhead, reconnects, backup feeds and other traffic can make real totals differ from stream-payload arithmetic.
Estimate the stream’s outgoing data use
For a steady bitrate, estimate payload with bitrate in bits per second × seconds ÷ 8. The figures below use decimal units (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) and describe only the stream payload sent at the stated rate—not a measured network total.

The 14 Mbps row is the same arithmetic applied to YouTube’s recommended 1080p30 bitrate. A 24/7 stream sends data continuously, so even a seemingly small bitrate adds up across a day or month. Your network’s measured total may be higher for the reasons above.
Show mobile viewers how to use Data saver
On Android, viewers can choose a lower playback quality themselves. In the YouTube app, the path is profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences; choose Data saver for mobile networks. While a stream is playing, viewers can also open the player’s Quality menu. YouTube describes Data saver as lower picture quality, and notes that higher picture quality uses more data. This setting affects playback on that viewer’s device; it does not change the church’s encoder or reduce the stream uploaded to YouTube.

YouTube’s live settings include DVR, which lets viewers pause and rewind. Lower latency can mean more playback buffering. These options affect the viewing experience; YouTube’s cited guidance does not identify them as bitrate-reduction controls, so they are not substitutes for lowering the encoder output.
