Set your YouTube Live encoder to a 16:9 output for an ordinary horizontal stream. A playlist does not appear to force its videos into 4:3: YouTube’s player adapts to each video’s aspect ratio. That conclusion follows from YouTube’s guidance for individual videos; its documentation does not describe a playlist-level aspect-ratio setting.
Set the stream to 16:9
In your encoder, choose a 16:9 resolution, then set frame rate and bitrate to suit that output and your available upload connection. Use the encoder settings that match the video you intend to broadcast; YouTube detects the incoming settings and transcodes the stream into formats for viewers on different devices and network conditions. YouTube’s computer player uses 16:9 as its standard aspect ratio, while the player adapts to each video’s aspect ratio and the viewer’s device. A 4:3 playlist does not, on the available documentation, change the aspect ratio of a 16:9 live video. See YouTube’s aspect-ratio guidance.
Create and configure the live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and use Live Control Room to create or schedule the stream.
- In the stream’s settings, copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. YouTube describes these settings in its live stream setup documentation.
- Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the encoder for the intended 16:9 output and your connection. YouTube detects the encoder configuration and transcodes for playback.
- Test the stream before going live, then monitor stream health during the broadcast, as YouTube recommends.
Decide whether to enable vertical dual streaming
Live Control Room can run horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions together. Viewers in the Shorts feed see the vertical version; other viewers see the horizontal one, and both versions share the same live chat. The vertical stream is a center crop by default, though YouTube offers other layout choices. Review the vertical preview to make sure the crop keeps important documentary content—such as subtitles, faces, maps, or archival details—in frame.

Before the broadcast starts, use the Stream tab’s Stream settings to adjust the vertical layout or turn off Dual stream if you want only the horizontal version. YouTube says a vertical version cannot be added after the stream has started. Details are in YouTube’s live streaming guide.
Keep the video free of added black bars
Do not add black bars or other padding to the video just to make it appear 4:3 in a playlist. YouTube advises against embedded padding because it interferes with the player’s dynamic sizing. Let the player adapt to the video’s actual aspect ratio instead.
