To stream a recorded worship service from a Windows desktop to YouTube Live, play the recording into an encoder such as OBS, connect the encoder to a YouTube Studio stream with its stream URL and key, then check the preview and monitor the broadcast. For a long broadcast, keep a local recording as a backup: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured completely.
Before you set up the broadcast
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Enabling livestreaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Check the current instructions in YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Choose the recording and playback workflow. The desktop must play the service and send its output to an encoder. YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a particular Windows capture method, so confirm that your chosen playback and capture setup sends both the intended picture and sound.
- Check rights to the recording. The available YouTube setup guidance does not establish whether your church has the necessary rights for a particular service recording, music, or other material. Verify that your licenses and permissions cover streaming that recording on YouTube.
- Plan for continuous operation. With the desktop method, the church is responsible for the computer, playback, internet connection, local backup, and monitoring. YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify Windows hardware requirements or a particular unattended restart method.
Set up a Windows desktop stream with OBS
- Enable livestreaming and verify the channel. In YouTube Studio, follow the encoder setup flow and confirm that livestreaming is available for the channel. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours before the event.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream for the service. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Configure OBS to connect to YouTube. YouTube lists OBS in its verified encoder directory. In OBS, open the stream settings and enter the YouTube stream URL and key. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, public instructions, or a recording. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting again.
- Set the service as the encoder’s video and audio source. Start playback on the Windows desktop and configure the OBS scene and sources so YouTube receives the recording’s picture and sound. The exact capture method depends on the desktop and OBS configuration; test it rather than assuming playback is being captured.
- Choose stable encoder settings. YouTube’s common recommendations are RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose a bitrate that the church’s upload connection can sustain reliably; test it instead of selecting a high value by default. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide for the current recommendations.
- Start sending the stream and inspect the preview. Start the encoder, wait for the Live Control Room preview, and verify that video and audio are present and intelligible before making the broadcast public or relying on it. YouTube recommends testing the setup and monitoring quality; see its live streaming tips.
- Record a local backup. Enable a local archive in the encoder and check that the recording file is growing during the broadcast. YouTube recommends a local archive as a backup. Confirm the event is accessible and monitor audio and video quality while it runs.
What changes when the stream runs all day
YouTube’s archive guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream that runs longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on YouTube to preserve a complete replay of an all-day broadcast. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s live archive guidance and DVR guidance.
For a service intended to run beyond that threshold, the practical safeguard is to keep a separate local recording and confirm it is being saved. YouTube recommends a local archive but does not specify a required drive type or capacity. Make sure the destination has enough available space for the expected recording, and verify the file rather than assuming a backup was created.

YouTube Studio does not offer livestreaming
Check that the channel is verified and has no livestreaming restrictions in the past 90 days. If livestreaming was just enabled for the first time, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.

The Live Control Room preview is missing picture or sound
Confirm that the Windows recording is playing, the intended OBS sources are active, and the encoder is sending to the stream URL and key for the correct YouTube event. Test playback and captured audio before relying on the public stream.
The stream is unstable or stops sending
Use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings as a starting point, then test a bitrate the church’s upload connection can sustain. Check the connection and continue monitoring the stream rather than assuming a successful start means it will remain healthy.

The replay is incomplete or DVR rewind is unavailable
Check the stream’s total duration. YouTube warns that broadcasts longer than 12 hours may not be captured and that DVR may be limited or unavailable past that duration. Use the local archive as the backup and verify the recording file while the stream is live.
The local backup is missing or not growing
Check that local recording is enabled, that the chosen destination is available and has free space, and that the file size increases during the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and checking the local archive rather than relying on an unverified backup.
