That playlist handles sequencing—not the endless loop, YouTube connection, or recovery if the encoder stops. Those need separate planning.
What the text playlist does—and what it does not
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a script of file directives and presents the listed media as one concatenated input. It adjusts timestamps so the first file begins at zero and each later file follows the previous one. When the last episode ends, however, the playlist does not automatically make the feed repeat forever. Looping and keeping the streaming process alive are separate parts of the system.
For an always-on feed, think in four pieces: compatible episode files, an ordered playlist, an encoder sending the resulting program to YouTube, and a way to restart or monitor that encoder if it exits. A public Ubuntu VPS example uses FFmpeg, text lists, YouTube RTMP ingest, and a restarting system service; it illustrates one operational pattern, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming or a universal setup (community implementation example).
Check YouTube eligibility and rights first
Confirm live-stream access
YouTube’s current help page says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to stream. Check your channel’s Live Control Room for eligibility and its current ingest settings before configuring an encoder. YouTube’s requirements can change; its live-streaming setup guidance is the reference for current channel requirements.

Clear the rights to every element
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, and a stream may be interrupted or terminated if the material remains. Check rights for the episode audio as well as any music, artwork, video, or other material included in the files. Even licensed material may be interrupted if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist; coordinate allowlisting where it applies. Prepare episode files that can concatenate cleanly
The concat demuxer expects the listed files to have the same streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. Episodes that differ in stream layout or encoding may not join cleanly. Compare the files before building the playlist; if they do not match, standardize or re-encode them to a consistent format. The right settings depend on the source files and YouTube’s current encoder requirements, so do not assume one preset fits every podcast.
Duration metadata matters too. FFmpeg warns that inaccurate durations can cause artifacts because timestamps for later files are derived from the preceding file’s duration. If a file’s stored duration is wrong and you know the correct duration, the concat format supports a duration directive to override it. Consult the FFmpeg formats documentation when checking syntax and behavior.

Create a plain-text file such as
episodes.ffconcat. Putffconcat version 1.0on the very first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark, for automatic format recognition. -
Add one
filedirective per episode. For example:ffconcat version 1.0 file '/media/podcast/episode-001.mp4' file '/media/podcast/episode-002.mp4' file '/media/podcast/episode-003.mp4' -
Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters. The concat demuxer’s
safeoption defaults to1, which rejects unsafe paths. If your workflow needs absolute paths or other names the default rejects, review FFmpeg’s safety guidance and explicitly choose an appropriate option; do not disable path checks casually. -
Validate the playlist and media locally before relying on it for a live feed. The playlist format specifies sequence, but it cannot make incompatible streams match or correct unknown duration errors.
Connect the playlist to a continuous YouTube feed
The playlist is an input description, not a complete broadcast system. Your encoder must read its media and send a live output to YouTube using the ingest details shown in Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private. YouTube distinguishes the incoming liveStream resource from the viewer-facing liveBroadcast event. Its API documentation describes a 24/7-feed pattern in which a broadcast can be completed without stopping the continuing feed; that distinction can matter in API-managed setups, but it does not mean every channel must create multiple broadcasts. For an endless rotation, configure the outer playback process to return to the beginning of the sequence after the final episode, then supervise the encoder so it can be restarted if it exits. The exact repeat command and process configuration depend on the FFmpeg version, media, and hosting environment. The available documentation supports the playlist mechanics but does not establish one loop command that is reliable for every set of podcast files. Test the complete sequence, including the transition from the last episode back to the first, before treating it as a 24/7 service.
Keep the stream running: local machine or hosted process

A local encoder is convenient if you already have a machine and connection you can leave running. A VPS can keep the process off your personal computer, but moves setup and maintenance to a server. Neither approach, by itself, proves uninterrupted delivery; plan for monitoring and failure recovery.

The playlist is rejected or paths are missing: Check that the marker is exactly the first line and that the file uses valid quoting or escaping. If you used absolute paths, remember the default safe-path setting rejects unsafe paths; choose an explicit option only after considering the security implications.

Audio or video breaks at an episode boundary: Compare the episodes’ stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Standardize files that do not match, then validate the transitions again.

There are gaps, artifacts, or timestamp problems: Check whether a file’s stored duration is inaccurate. Where the actual duration is known, FFmpeg’s concat format allows a
durationdirective to override it. -
The playlist stops after the final episode: A list of
filedirectives defines a sequence, not endless playback. Configure and test the outer repeat logic separately. -
The YouTube stream ends when FFmpeg exits: Playlist syntax does not supervise the encoder. Add monitoring and a restart strategy appropriate to the machine or hosting environment, and test what happens when the process stops.

YouTube replaces or interrupts the stream: Check for a Content ID match and confirm that you have the necessary rights. If the material is licensed, ask the rights owner whether your channel must be allowlisted.

You cannot start an encoder stream: Recheck channel verification, live-stream restrictions during the preceding 90 days, and the current ingest settings in Live Control Room.

Can the text playlist contain episodes in any order?
Yes. FFmpeg presents the files in the order of their file directives, so arrange those lines in the desired sequence.
Does a 24/7 feed require a separate YouTube broadcast for every episode?
The feed and viewer-facing broadcast are distinct YouTube API resources. The API documentation gives a continuous-feed example where a broadcast can be completed while the feed continues, but channel setups vary.
