How to Configure FFmpeg to Crossfade Podcast Episodes on YouTube Live

Use FFmpeg’s acrossfade filter to transition between prerecorded podcast episodes, then connect the encoded audio-and-video program to YouTube Live using current encoder guidance.

Use FFmpeg’s acrossfade audio filter to transition between prerecorded podcast episodes, then encode the resulting audio with a video source and send the complete program to YouTube Live. The crossfade is only the audio part of the setup: YouTube still needs a valid live ingest connection and a compliant encoded stream.

What you need before building the stream

  • FFmpeg installed on a machine that can remain connected while you are live.
  • The episode filenames and the audio streams you intend to use. Confirm the files’ formats and stream layouts before writing a filtergraph.
  • A visual source for the live program, such as a still image or video. The correct command depends on that source and on the input containers; there is no single command that fits every setup.
  • A YouTube Live stream endpoint and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.

Plan and preview the transition point. The right crossfade duration depends on the material: a brief transition may suit spoken segments, while music or room tone may call for a different length. The official documentation does not prescribe a podcast-specific duration or loudness target.

Crossfade two episode audio files

FFmpeg’s acrossfade filter fades from one audio input stream to another. Its documented file-to-file example is:

ffmpeg -i first.flac -i second.flac -filter_complex acrossfade=d=10:c1=exp:c2=exp output.flac

This example creates a ten-second crossfade with exponential transition curves and writes an audio file. It is not a YouTube Live command. Replace the example filenames and choose a duration and curves suited to your audio; listen to the result before using the transition in a live program. See the FFmpeg Filters Documentation for the filter’s full option list.

Set the transition length and overlap

  • d or duration sets the crossfade length. When you set it, it takes precedence over the sample-count option.
  • nb_samples or ns sets the transition length in samples. FFmpeg documents a default of 44,100 samples, equivalent to one second at 44.1 kHz; that default is not a recommendation for every podcast transition.
  • o or overlap controls whether the end of the first stream overlaps the start of the second. Overlap is enabled by default. Use o=0 to disable it.
  • c1 and c2 (also called curve1 and curve2) set the fade curves for the outgoing and incoming streams. Their curve types are documented under FFmpeg’s afade filter.

Chain more than two episodes

For a sequence of episodes, n or inputs specifies how many input streams to crossfade in order. FFmpeg documents n=3 as a way to chain three inputs. The correct filtergraph and input labels depend on the files and the larger program, so test the graph with representative files before sending it live.

Build the complete YouTube Live output

The filtered audio must be part of an encoded program that also has video. How you connect the filter output depends on whether the visual is a still image, video, or another source, and on the input stream layout. Treat the audio example above as a component to adapt—not as a universal live command. Test the assembled graph locally or in a private test stream before relying on it for a broadcast.

  1. Choose the visual input. Prepare the still image or video you want viewers to see, and determine how it will be supplied to FFmpeg alongside the episode audio.
  2. Connect the audio graph. Route the selected episode audio streams through acrossfade in the intended order. Check that the output audio stream is included in the final encoded program.
  3. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. For video bitrate, select the row matching your intended codec, resolution, and frame rate on the YouTube live encoder settings page rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
  4. Check audio settings against the output you need. YouTube lists stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Its 5.1 guidance is 48 kHz and 384 kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only for AAC. Confirm the current requirements on YouTube’s settings page, especially if your program is not stereo.
  5. Connect using the endpoint and key from YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. The protocol, server endpoint, and path must be valid; the RTMPS connection uses port 443. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide. Never place a real stream key in a public command, screenshot, or article.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. Before an event, test with audio and movement representative of the planned program; during the stream, monitor stream health and read any status messages in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder settings can change, so check the current page when you configure the encoder.

When HLS ingestion is the right choice

HLS is a separate YouTube ingestion method, not a setting to combine casually with an RTMPS command. It requires an appropriate HLS setup, including TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and segment durations from one to four seconds. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP stream. Use the dedicated YouTube HLS setup instructions if your workflow specifically calls for HLS.

Troubleshoot the audio and connection

  • The transition is too abrupt or lasts too long: Adjust d and preview the result. The documented one-second default is a sample-count default, not a podcast-specific setting.
  • The second episode does not enter as expected: Check input ordering and the filtergraph connections, then verify the audio streams in each file. For more than two inputs, confirm that the graph is configured to chain them and that the input count is set appropriately.
  • The output has no audio: Check that the filter output is mapped into the final program and that the selected inputs contain the expected audio streams. Container and stream-layout differences may require changes to the graph.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the endpoint, path, protocol, and stream key in YouTube Studio. For RTMPS, confirm that the connection is configured for the valid RTMPS endpoint and port 443.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Compare the encoder’s codec, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval with the current YouTube guidance. Test again with representative audio and motion, and use YouTube Studio’s stream-health messages to narrow down the issue.
  • The live output has more delay than expected: Check whether the workflow is using HLS. Its segmented delivery has higher latency than a continuous RTMP stream, and its setup requirements differ.
