If your YouTube playlist privacy setting won’t save, edit the playlist from the account that owns it in YouTube Studio: go to Content > Playlists > Details, choose a setting under Visibility, and click Save. Reopen the details to check which setting is selected. YouTube does not document a universal update delay or a single fix for every case, so first confirm the playlist, account, and visibility option are the right ones.
Change the playlist’s visibility in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio with the account that owns the playlist.
- Select Content in the left menu, then open Playlists.
- Find the playlist and open Details.
- Under Visibility, choose Public, Unlisted, or Private.
- Click Save.
- If the page still seems unchanged, reopen the playlist’s details and inspect the selected setting. This is a practical confirmation step, not a troubleshooting procedure YouTube formally prescribes.
YouTube also documents changing playlist privacy in the regular YouTube interface. On desktop, open the You tab, choose Playlists, open the full playlist, and select the privacy option beneath its title. On Android, tap your profile picture, go to Playlists and View all, select the playlist, tap Edit, choose its privacy setting, and tap Save. Labels and paths can vary with platform and interface version. YouTube’s playlist privacy instructions cover these options.
Check what the selected privacy setting allows
A playlist can appear unchanged if you expect one setting to behave like another. YouTube’s documented distinctions are:

For example, an unlisted playlist is intended to be reached through its link, not found through normal search. A public playlist can be accessible by link without appearing immediately in the particular place you expected.

Work through the common causes
Make sure you are editing the playlist itself
YouTube has a separate channel Privacy control for saved playlists and activity. If your own saved playlists or likes are visible on your channel, adjust the channel’s privacy controls instead of changing the visibility of a playlist you own. See YouTube’s privacy settings guide.
Confirm you are signed in as the playlist owner
YouTube says playlist owners can change a playlist’s privacy. If the visibility control is missing or the change does not apply, check the account shown in Studio and confirm that it owns the playlist. Being able to view or share a playlist does not establish that your account owns it.

Check whether the account is supervised
YouTube warns that playlist privacy features may not be available with supervised accounts. If the control is unavailable on such an account, that documented limitation may explain why you cannot make the change.
Distinguish editing an existing playlist from creating a public one
YouTube documents a daily limit on how many public playlists a channel can create across YouTube, YouTube Music, and the YouTube API. Access to advanced features can increase that limit. The help page describes a limit on creating public playlists; it does not say that the limit prevents changing an existing playlist’s privacy.

Consider the limited legacy exception
YouTube says that, beginning July 23, 2021, it made unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017 private unless the creator opted out. YouTube also notes that some older unlisted playlists were created in the old system. This can account for an unexpected state on older content, but it is not evidence of a general current problem with playlist settings. Details are in YouTube’s older unlisted content policy.
If the setting still will not stick
- Decide whether the issue is a playlist’s own visibility or your channel’s saved-playlist and activity privacy.
- Verify that you are using the playlist owner’s account.
- In Studio, use Content > Playlists > Details > Visibility, select the intended option, and click Save.
- Reopen the details and check the selected visibility, then compare its expected behavior with the table above.
- If the option is unavailable, check whether the account is supervised. If you are creating a new public playlist rather than editing one, consider YouTube’s daily creation limit.
If the selection still does not persist, YouTube’s current help material does not identify a universal cause or state how long an update should take. It does not establish that waiting, clearing a cache, or switching browsers will fix the issue. Consult YouTube’s current Help or Creator support channels with the account and playlist details, and describe what happens after you click Save.
