To keep recorded Orthodox Christian services live on YouTube around the clock, play authorized recordings continuously through an encoder and send the feed to a YouTube Live broadcast. YouTube does not provide a setting that automatically loops a playlist of recordings indefinitely. The playback and encoding source must keep running, and someone should monitor the stream, rights notices, and outages.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check the channel’s live status in YouTube Studio before scheduling. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
- Recordings that the parish is authorized to stream, including their music, chant, images, readings, and other incorporated material.
- A playback system and encoder that can continuously send video and audio to YouTube. A continuous broadcast depends on this source continuing to run.
- A parish plan for consent, privacy, monitoring, and what to do if the source, internet connection, or stream fails.
Prepare recordings, rights, and consent
Confirm rights for each recording
Make a playlist of recordings cleared for the intended use. Keep a record of who owns or controls each recording and its component material. YouTube’s terms place responsibility for obtaining necessary rights on the content provider, including music rights. Do not assume that owning a copy of a recording, an old recording, or a general parish music license authorizes continuous public rebroadcast. Ask the relevant rights holders about the actual use, territories, monetization if applicable, and whether the recording will remain archived. YouTube Terms of Service
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects a match. Even licensed material can be interrupted unless the rights holder has added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived streams may also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast. Protect parishioners’ privacy
Follow your jurisdiction’s requirements and your diocese’s policies. Orthodox Church in America guidance recommends informing parishioners when videotaping occurs, posting signs when worship is distributed online or through broadcast media, and obtaining signed releases from adults and from guardians of minors who may be filmed. Consider framing the camera to avoid people who do not wish to appear, creating no-camera areas, and keeping sensitive pastoral situations out of view. Set up the YouTube live broadcast
- Create or select the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or choose the broadcast. Schedule it if viewers need advance notice or a stable event listing.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the stream key and ingestion details shown in Live Control Room into your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: share it only with trusted operators and do not publish it.
- Start sending the feed. Start continuous playback and the encoder. Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room before starting the broadcast for viewers.
- Start and monitor the broadcast. Confirm that the public broadcast is live, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and verify that audio and video remain intact.

Choose encoder settings and test the feed
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live programming. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. The recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose a setting your stable upload connection can sustain. YouTube transcodes live streams for different playback formats. - Test with representative movement and audio before making the stream public.
- Inspect the preview for picture, sound, and synchronization problems.
- Monitor stream health during the test and after launch.
- Assign someone to respond to a stopped encoder, internet outage, copyright warning, or silent or broken playback source.
Plan discovery, moderation, and archives
Share the scheduled broadcast or a stable channel link with parishioners. Decide whether live chat fits the service and, if enabled, assign a moderator. The same guide says streams up to 12 hours are automatically archived and advises teams to record longer streams separately for manual upload. Do not assume a 24-hour broadcast will produce one complete YouTube archive: arrange a separate recording or use shorter broadcasts if a complete archive matters. The guide is not a guarantee of current behavior for every account, so check Live Control Room before relying on an archive.

Common problems and practical responses
- You cannot start a live stream: verify the channel and check YouTube Studio for any live-streaming restriction; the channel must have no such restriction in the previous 90 days.
- The encoder sends no usable preview: check that playback is running, the stream key and ingestion details match the selected broadcast, and the encoder is sending a supported format. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- The stream stops unexpectedly: determine whether the playback source, encoder, power, or internet connection stopped. Restart the failed component and confirm the preview and broadcast status before considering the stream restored.
- You receive a copyright warning or interruption: stop and review the matched material and the permissions for that exact use. Contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting; a license alone may not prevent a live interruption.
- The archive is incomplete: broadcasts longer than 12 hours should not be relied on for a single complete automatic YouTube archive. Use a separate recording or shorter broadcasts if an archive is required.
Keep the purpose pastoral
The Orthodox Church in America advises that livestreaming should draw the faithful into prayer and worship, rather than provide something merely to watch. That aim can guide practical choices about camera framing, chat, service presentation, and whether a continuous recorded feed is suitable for the parish.
