You can use a Chromebook to control a separate Mac, Windows, or Linux computer that runs an encoder and sends a prerecorded video to YouTube Live. The Chromebook is the remote-control screen; the host computer must stay online and do the actual streaming.
What you need
- A Chromebook with internet access and permission to use Chrome Remote Desktop.
- A separate Mac, Windows, or Linux computer that can remain powered on, awake, and connected to the internet during the stream.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so set it up ahead of time. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the workflow and eligibility.
- A YouTube-compatible encoder on the host, plus a video file you have the right to stream.
Remote desktop does not make the Chromebook the encoder. It lets you operate the host remotely; the host’s encoder sends the video to YouTube.
Set up the remote host and connect from your Chromebook
- On the host computer: open Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop setup guide, choose remote access, and configure the host. Google documents host support for Mac, Windows, and Linux.
- On the Chromebook: open Chrome Remote Desktop on the web, select the host when it is online, and enter its PIN to connect. The host needs to be reachable over the internet.
- Confirm control: make sure you can use the host’s desktop and encoder before scheduling a stream. Google says remote desktop sessions are fully encrypted, but a work or school administrator or restrictive network may prevent access. Google’s access guide covers the service and its restrictions.
Configure the encoder and YouTube Live
- On the host, open a YouTube-compatible encoder and prepare the prerecorded content. YouTube supports encoder software and standalone hardware, but the exact steps for loading and playing a local file depend on the encoder. Follow that encoder’s current documentation for its file-playback setup rather than assuming a particular app or media-source configuration.
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder. Copy both into the matching fields in the host encoder, then save the configuration. The stream key functions like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if you think it has been exposed. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
- Choose the encoder’s output settings to suit your video and available upload connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum bitrate and 14 Mbps as recommended; use YouTube’s encoder settings table for other resolutions and frame rates.
Test, go live, and end the stream
- Before the event, run a test using representative motion and audio. Check the host’s upload capacity and encoder output, then look for the stream preview in Live Control Room. YouTube advises checking stream health and preview before going live; see its live-streaming tips.
- Start sending from the host encoder. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, review the picture and sound, then click Go live.
- Keep the host powered on, awake, connected, and running the encoder for the entire stream. If the host loses internet or the encoder stops, the Chromebook’s remote session cannot substitute for the outgoing stream.
- When finished, end the broadcast in YouTube and stop the host encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; consult the encoder guide for its current stream workflow.
Copyright and prerecorded content
Having a file on your computer does not automatically grant permission to broadcast it. Use content you created, licensed, or otherwise have the right to stream, including its music and other embedded material. Review YouTube’s current rules before broadcasting, especially if the video contains third-party footage or audio. A remote desktop setup changes how you control the encoder, not the rights obligations attached to the video.
When a dedicated encoder may make sense
If you need scheduled prerecorded playout without keeping a computer in the workflow, YouTube’s encoder directory describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder. It also notes optional AJA PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live. This is a separate hardware route, not a requirement for the Chromebook-and-host method; check the manufacturer’s current documentation for configuration and availability. YouTube’s encoder directory lists the device.

Troubleshooting
- The host does not appear in Chrome Remote Desktop: confirm that remote access is configured on the host, the host is powered on and online, and the network permits the connection. A work or school administrator may restrict remote access.
- You can control the host, but YouTube receives no stream: check that the host encoder is running and that the correct stream URL and key are configured. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- The preview is missing or the stream health is poor: test the host’s upload capacity, check the encoder’s output settings against YouTube’s bitrate guidance, and test with representative motion and audio. Review the preview and stream-health information in Live Control Room before going live.
- The broadcast ends when you close the Chromebook: the host encoder must continue sending the stream. Verify the host remains awake, online, and running the encoder; remote control alone does not keep a stopped host process running.
- The channel cannot start a live stream: check channel verification and whether a live-stream restriction has been applied in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want prerecorded video to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo offers a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not camera footage.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud.
- Your video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot with no quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
