You can stream a prerecorded 1080p video as a YouTube Live event from a low-cost server by using FFmpeg to send the file to YouTube’s ingest address at a live pace. First check the file and choose stream copy if its codecs and format are compatible; otherwise encode it to suitable H.264/AAC settings. The server must sustain the stream’s upload bitrate and have enough monthly data transfer for the hours you plan to broadcast.

What you need before streaming

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  • A scheduled or newly created live event in YouTube Studio, with its server URL and private stream key.
  • A server that can sustain the chosen outbound bitrate and has enough transfer allowance for the planned runtime.
  • FFmpeg installed on the server, and a video file you are authorized to stream.

Do not share the stream key in public code, logs, screenshots, or a command pasted into a shared support channel. Anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to the event.

Choose 1080p settings for your source

Match the output frame rate to the material where possible. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends these bitrate ranges and settings; check the linked guidance before an important broadcast because platform requirements can change.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate Rate control and keyframes
1080p30 5–14 Mbps Use constant bitrate (CBR); target a two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds.
1080p60 6–17 Mbps Use constant bitrate (CBR); target a two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds.

These are YouTube recommendations for H.264, not a guarantee that every file or server will work at every setting. YouTube’s full live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions include additional codec and format details.

Inspect the video before choosing FFmpeg options

Find the file’s dimensions, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and container before starting. If it already contains compatible H.264 video and AAC audio, stream copy may avoid the cost of decoding and re-encoding. FFmpeg’s -c copy copies encoded packets; it does not make an incompatible codec, container, timestamps, or stream layout compatible with YouTube.

If you must resize, change frame rate, or encode to a different codec, the server needs enough CPU or GPU capacity to do that work in real time. For a compatible source, compute demands may be modest, so compare hosting on sustained network capacity and data transfer as well as CPU specifications. FFmpeg documents its options and stream-copy behavior in the FFmpeg documentation.

Create the YouTube event and copy its ingest details

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream. If live streaming has not previously been enabled for the channel, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
  2. Open the event’s encoder or stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key. Use the values shown for that event rather than guessing an endpoint format.
  3. Keep the key private. Avoid embedding it in a public repository, an unredacted screenshot, or persistent logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through the available YouTube settings before relying on it.
  4. Test the event in Live Control Room. Watch stream-health messages and check that both motion and audio are arriving as expected before making the event public.

YouTube’s manual encoder setup is described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. The API treats the event and the incoming media feed as related but distinct resources: a liveBroadcast represents the event, while a liveStream contains ingest and media settings. You only need to manage those API resources directly if you are automating event creation.

Send the prerecorded file with FFmpeg

For a compatible file, this is an illustrative starting template, not a tested universal command. Replace the placeholders with the event’s current ingest address and private key, and confirm compatibility with the source file and YouTube Studio settings.

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c copy -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY'
  • -re reads the file at its native frame rate, pacing file input so packets are sent like a live feed rather than as fast as the server can process them.
  • -c copy avoids re-encoding. Remove it and select appropriate video and audio encoders and settings if the source needs conversion; do not assume stream copy fixes an incompatible input.
  • -f flv selects the output format commonly used with RTMP-family ingest. The URL shape and accepted protocol must match the current event settings.

For a transcoded H.264 output, configure constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, then choose the bitrate within the YouTube range for the target frame rate. A command for transcoding depends on the installed FFmpeg build, source characteristics, and whether hardware encoding is available; test the exact configuration rather than treating one command as universal.

Prefer RTMPS when the event supports it

RTMPS encrypts the connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Google’s developer guidance describes TLS over port 443 and notes that clients must use the correct hostname and SNI: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS. YouTube also publishes an ingestion protocol comparison. Use the RTMPS server URL shown for your event when available, and make sure the server’s firewall and network allow the required outbound connection.

Budget for transfer and sustained upload

A continuous stream consumes outbound data for its full duration. As a simple estimate, data in bytes is bitrate in bits per second multiplied by seconds, divided by eight; protocol overhead adds some extra. At 10 Mbps, that is about 1.25 MB/s or 4.5 GB per hour before overhead. A four-hour event at that rate is roughly 18 GB before overhead. These are arithmetic estimates, not provider measurements.

When choosing a low-cost VPS or other server, verify the details for the specific plan and region; no particular provider or current hosting price is established here.

  • Sustained outbound bitrate and network-port capacity, not just a headline burst speed.
  • Included monthly data transfer and charges or throttling after the allowance is used.
  • CPU or GPU capacity if the source must be transcoded in real time.
  • Storage for the media file, and whether the file must remain on the server for the whole broadcast.
  • Network route and region relative to YouTube ingest, plus a restart or process-supervision method if the encoder exits.
  • Total cost for the actual number of streaming hours, including transfer overages.

Copyright, reused content, and event length

Only stream material you have the rights or permissions to broadcast. A video file being prerecorded does not exempt it from copyright rules, and YouTube may interrupt or restrict a stream if it detects protected material. Review YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the platform’s applicable copyright requirements before scheduling a public event. Separately, reused-content policies can affect channel monetization; permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are not the same question.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that guidance as evidence that a single uninterrupted stream can run indefinitely; plan the event’s duration and archive needs accordingly. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

YouTube shows no incoming video

  • Check that the event is live or ready to receive a feed, and that you copied its current server URL and stream key.
  • Confirm the full URL is quoted if it contains shell-special characters, and check for accidental whitespace or truncation.
  • Check outbound firewall rules and whether the server can reach the selected ingest host and port.

The connection starts but YouTube reports stream health problems

  • Compare the actual frame rate, resolution, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s guidance.
  • If stream-copying, inspect the source codecs, timestamps, and container; try a controlled transcode if the input is incompatible.
  • Check sustained upload capacity and network stability, not only a short speed-test result.

The file finishes too quickly or output timing is wrong

For file input, confirm the command includes -re so FFmpeg reads at the source’s native rate. Check the file’s frame rate and timestamps. Do not add looping options without verifying their behavior in the installed FFmpeg version and testing the transition; a seamless loop is not guaranteed.

Audio is missing, delayed, or incompatible

Check whether the source actually contains an audio stream and whether its codec and timestamps are suitable for ingest. If conversion is required, encode audio to a format supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance and test synchronization in Live Control Room before the public event.

The broadcast stops unexpectedly

Check FFmpeg’s exit status and server logs privately, without exposing the key. Review server restarts, memory or CPU exhaustion, transfer limits, and connection drops. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health; if you use a process supervisor, configure and test restart behavior rather than assuming the process will recover on its own.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a server or encoder process to manage, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers.

The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. The service is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed. See StreamNeo or its plans. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
