Yes, in principle—but a Raspberry Pi 5 is not a proven set-and-forget 24/7 encoder for prerecorded video. Raspberry Pi documents software video encoding on Pi 5, and YouTube publishes the settings an encoder must meet. Neither source certifies an uninterrupted prerecorded loop on this board. Whether your setup can run continuously depends on whether it can pass through the file’s existing video stream or must encode it, along with the power, cooling, storage, and network conditions. Test the complete setup before relying on it.
What the Pi 5 can—and cannot—be assumed to do
Raspberry Pi documentation says, “Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders.” It describes a camera-oriented low-latency workflow that can reach 1080p30, but that is not a guarantee for every prerecorded file, encoding pipeline, or 24/7 workload. Software encoding can add processor load and latency; filters, overlays, scaling, and audio conversion can add more.
If your file already has video and audio formats suitable for the intended YouTube feed, and your encoder workflow can pass the video through without re-encoding, processor demand may be lower. That is a conditional technical possibility, not a guaranteed shortcut. Check the container, codecs, frame rate, audio, and exact software pipeline, then test it on the Pi 5.
Choose a YouTube-compatible stream profile
YouTube accepts RTMP or RTMPS encoder input. Its current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video up to 60 fps; for RTMP/RTMPS, it lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends constant-bitrate video encoding. RTMPS encrypts the connection and is YouTube’s recommended protocol. The targets below are YouTube ingestion guidance, not a promise that a Pi 5 can encode each profile continuously.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| H.264 profile | YouTube minimum video bitrate | YouTube recommended video bitrate | Keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Leave upload capacity above the selected stream’s total bitrate so ordinary network variation does not consume all available headroom. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into viewer output formats.
For a Pi doing software encoding, a lower resolution or frame rate may be a sensible first test if it suits the documentary and the channel. Do not select a profile just because YouTube accepts it: verify CPU load, stream health, and uninterrupted output with your actual media and network.

Set up and test the local workflow
YouTube’s general encoder workflow is to retrieve the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room, configure an encoder, start sending the feed, and monitor stream health. You need software that can feed the prerecorded file continuously as a live encoder input. The official Pi and YouTube guidance does not provide a tested Pi 5 procedure for looping a prerecorded file indefinitely, so the exact software commands and settings depend on your operating system, encoder, file formats, and whether you re-encode.
- Inspect the media. Confirm the file’s container, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and audio sample rate. Decide whether your chosen workflow will pass through the video or re-encode it; conversion, scaling, and filters increase the work the Pi must do.
- Choose a conservative profile. Select a YouTube-supported protocol and profile, then set a constant video bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and compatible audio. For software encoding, begin at a workload your test can sustain rather than assuming the Pi will handle a high-resolution profile.
- Get YouTube’s connection details. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key and enter them in your encoder. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Run a representative test. Include the actual documentary’s audio and motion, not only a static screen. Watch YouTube’s stream-health reporting and check for dropped frames, disconnects, audio problems, and bitrate instability.
- Test the whole operating environment. Run long enough to reveal issues with heat, power, storage, process stability, and internet service. Confirm that your loop behaves as intended at the end of the file and after a restart or connection interruption. These are checks to perform, not results of a published Pi 5 endurance test.
- Monitor the live session. Make sure the feed is actually live and healthy in Live Control Room. Keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy of the program.
“Nonstop live” does not mean “complete replay archive”
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but warns that a stream running longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It also notes that DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on long-running streams. If you need a complete replay, do not rely on one continuous session to create it: keep a local archive and plan the live schedule around YouTube’s archive limits.

Clear rights and consider monetization separately
You are responsible for having the rights needed to livestream the documentary and all included audio, music, footage, and participant material. Being prerecorded does not remove that obligation or the requirement to follow YouTube’s rules and Community Guidelines.
Permission to use material does not by itself guarantee monetization eligibility. YouTube applies its monetization policies to livestreams; repetitive or mass-produced material can raise “inauthentic content” concerns, and reused material may be ineligible if it lacks significant original commentary, modification, or educational or entertainment value. Monetization depends on the content and channel review, not simply on whether you have a license.

Local Pi or cloud streaming?
The main difference is who has to keep the stream infrastructure running. A Pi-based setup gives you local control, but your hardware, encoder process, power, and internet connection all become part of continuity. A cloud service shifts that operational burden away from your home equipment. YouTube’s verified encoder list names Gyre as a cloud option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming; its current pricing and service terms are not established here.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps looping from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or current plan details, then start the free day.
