You can use cloud-stored videos in a 24/7 YouTube stream, but the bucket cannot publish them to YouTube by itself. An encoder or media pipeline must read the objects, sequence or loop them, create a live feed, and send that feed to YouTube’s configured ingestion endpoint. The practical choice is whether you operate that encoder yourself or use a managed workflow—and in either case, you need to plan for monitoring and recovery.
How the bucket-to-YouTube setup works
A cloud storage bucket holds video objects. It is not, on its own, a YouTube Live input. The path is:
- Store the source videos and any playlist or manifest data in the bucket.
- Make the files available to an encoder running on a persistent machine or through a provider-specific integration.
- Sequence and loop the files, normalizing them if differences in codecs, frame sizes, frame rates, timestamps, or audio layouts require it.
- Encode or package the result as a live feed using a protocol supported by your chosen YouTube ingestion setup.
- Send the feed to YouTube using the ingestion address and stream name/key configured for the live stream.
- Monitor and recover the process so a failed encoder or unhealthy feed is detected and addressed.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a managed transcoding workflow: it accepts live RTMP or SRT input, produces HLS or DASH output, and can save output to Cloud Storage. Choose how the stored files become a live feed
Self-managed encoder
Run an encoder on a persistent computer or cloud machine, grant it access to the bucket objects, and configure it to produce and send the live feed. FFmpeg supports regular files, pipes, and network streams as inputs; its FAQ documents ways to concatenate media. The exact connector or download strategy for a particular object-storage provider is deployment-specific. FFmpeg’s documentation does not provide one universal bucket-to-YouTube recipe.

For playlists, choose a sequencing method that fits the files. FFmpeg’s FAQ describes the concat filter when re-encoding is needed and the concat demuxer for cases where re-encoding can be avoided. If files differ in stream characteristics, test and normalize them as required before relying on a continuous output. Consult the FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg FAQ; validate the actual media and command in your environment.
Managed media pipeline
A managed service can take responsibility for some of the transcoding and media-pipeline work, but check exactly what it accepts as input and where it sends output. Google Cloud’s documented Live Stream API workflow accepts live RTMP or SRT inputs and produces HLS or DASH outputs saved to Cloud Storage. It is not documented as a service that takes a bucket object and sends it straight to YouTube. You still need a path from your stored media to the service’s live input, and from its output to the destination you intend to use.

Configure YouTube ingestion and choose a protocol
Create or configure a YouTube live stream, then use the ingestion address and stream name/key supplied for the selected protocol. The YouTube LiveStreams resource exposes ingestion type, address, and stream status and health information. Keep the stream key in secret configuration; do not publish it in a script repository, log, or public playlist.
YouTube’s API documents RTMP/RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion types. Choose based on the protocol your encoder or pipeline supports, required codecs, latency needs, and operational complexity. Check YouTube’s current requirements when configuring the stream.

If you use HLS
YouTube’s HLS setup calls for TS media segments lasting 1–4 seconds, delivered with HTTPS POST or PUT, without byte-range delivery. The rolling playlist must have no more than five outstanding segments. HLS generally has higher latency than RTMP because it sends media in segments rather than as a continuous stream. Make a 24/7 stream maintainable
A continuous stream is an operating process, not just a successful initial connection. Keep the encoder or pipeline supervised, retain useful logs, alert on unexpected exits or unhealthy delivery, and decide how the process will restart or recover. The YouTube API’s status information can identify delivery issues such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, or missing audio. These health signals can help diagnose trouble; they are not an uptime guarantee.

- Test the complete path from bucket object to YouTube before relying on it continuously.
- Check that the playlist advances and loops as intended, including transitions between files.
- Validate output audio and video after any normalization or transcoding.
- Protect the stream key and restrict access to the machine or service that uses it.
- Monitor both process health and YouTube stream health, and define who responds when either fails.

Cost and production checks
There is no single supported cost estimate for this architecture. Your bill depends on region, media bitrate, how objects are read, viewing and egress patterns, transcoding choices, and how long the system runs. A managed pipeline does not remove the need to account for the storage and network path around it. Estimate those components for your actual workload and validate the design in the intended cloud region and account before treating it as production-ready.
The official product and technical documentation establishes the relevant workflows and protocol constraints, but not one provider-independent bucket connector, universal FFmpeg command, or guaranteed continuity level. Validate file compatibility, access permissions, and recovery behavior with your own media and deployment.
