A Linux VPS can stream prerecorded video to YouTube around the clock: run an encoder such as FFmpeg on the server, supply a video or playlist, and connect it to YouTube Live with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. But there is no defensible “best low-cost VPS” pick without current plan prices, outbound-transfer allowances, and sustained encoding tests. Compare the full monthly cost and verify that the server can encode your chosen format continuously before committing.
What “low cost” means for a 24/7 stream
The advertised VPS price is only one part of the bill. A continuous stream consumes outbound data every hour and may require sustained CPU capacity if the server encodes or transcodes the video. A low-priced plan can cost more than expected if it has a small transfer allowance, expensive overages, or insufficient sustained performance.
No provider plan prices or specifications are established here, so naming a cheapest provider or ranking current plans would be misleading. For a meaningful comparison, use the intended geography and workload, then check:
- Total recurring cost: VPS price plus predictable outbound-transfer charges or overages, with the billing period and cancellation terms clear.
- Outbound transfer: the included allowance, whether it is capped or metered, and what happens when it is exceeded.
- Sustained encoding capacity: performance for your selected resolution and codec over an extended run, not just a burst CPU specification.
- Storage and media handling: whether the VPS has enough space for the files and playlist, and how you will upload and update them.
- Location and route: the server region and stability of its route to YouTube’s ingest service.
- Administration: the time and skill needed to install, secure, monitor, and recover the encoder compared with a managed service.
Estimate the stream’s outbound data
For a rough transfer estimate, multiply the encoded bitrate by the hours streamed. At a constant bitrate, 1 Mbps sends about 0.45 GB per hour using decimal gigabytes; a continuous 30-day stream at 8 Mbps therefore sends about 2,592 GB (2.59 TB) of encoded data, before protocol overhead. Use the actual bitrate you intend to send, and check how the provider measures transfer and handles overhead.

Set up a Linux VPS stream
YouTube supports encoder-based live streaming. You will need a Linux server that remains available, your prerecorded media, an encoder process such as FFmpeg, and the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. Follow its current encoder setup instructions for the live control room and connection details.

Choose stream settings and test the actual workload
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends H.264 video at 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and RTMPS for encrypted delivery. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode the stream or that every source video benefits from those settings. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, test with representative motion and audio, and monitor stream health.
If the source files already match the required output, avoid assuming that a VPS must transcode them; the workload and required encoder settings determine the compute demand. If you do need to encode or change resolution, test that exact task for sustained operation on the proposed server before relying on it.

Connect the encoder to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, create or open a live stream and obtain the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder connection.
- Configure the encoder with those connection details and your chosen video and audio settings. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or shared repositories.
- Start a test broadcast and check YouTube’s stream health before treating the VPS as production-ready. Confirm the audio, image, bitrate, and stability using the same media and settings you intend to run continuously.
- Run the encoder under a process supervisor or service manager so it can be restarted after a process failure or server reboot. Keep the media and configuration in a location available to that service, and arrange monitoring so a stopped stream is noticed.
FFmpeg commands depend on the input format, desired playlist behavior, and whether re-encoding is necessary. Use the stream URL and key from your own YouTube Studio session rather than copying credentials into a public command example.
Plan for 24/7 operation and YouTube limits
A VPS does not make a stream self-healing by itself. The encoder may stop, the server may reboot, or the connection to YouTube may drop. Decide how the process will restart, how you will detect a failed broadcast, and how you will restore it. Test recovery rather than assuming a long-running command will stay healthy indefinitely.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full; if a complete archive matters, plan the broadcast schedule accordingly and verify the current live-stream guidance.
Copyright and monetization are separate checks
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to broadcast the video and audio, including music, and for the live and archived use. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and confirm rights for every asset before going live.
Best Value
Continuous playback does not itself qualify a channel for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams; its policy describes repetitive or mass-produced material as potentially ineligible and requires meaningful original contribution for reused material to qualify. The policy was clarified on July 15, 2025; see the current YouTube channel monetization policies and the TeamYouTube response to creator questions.

A self-managed VPS gives you control of the server and encoder, but also leaves you responsible for setup, transfer costs, monitoring, process recovery, and media management. YouTube’s encoder page lists OBS as open-source software and Gyre as a cloud-based service for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. Compare a managed service on its current price, limits, and workflow rather than assuming it is cheaper or more reliable than a VPS.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is #1 to try for a YouTube prerecorded 24/7 stream if you want to avoid maintaining a VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

Troubleshoot common VPS stream problems
- You cannot start a live broadcast: first-time live streaming may still be activating; YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Confirm that the live feature is enabled in your account and that you are using the current server URL and stream key from Studio.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: test the server’s upload path and the actual media with YouTube’s recommended settings. Check whether the configured bitrate is sustainable and monitor health during a representative run.
- The encoder exits or the stream stops: inspect the service or supervisor logs, confirm the media file and configuration are reachable after reboot, and test the restart and alerting behavior.
- The bill exceeds the VPS price: compare measured transfer with the provider’s included outbound data, metering rules, and overage rates; recalculate using the encoded bitrate and actual runtime.
- The video runs but monetization is unavailable: streaming continuously does not change YouTube’s originality and reused-content rules. Review the channel’s content against the current monetization policy.
What to choose
Choose a Linux VPS only after comparing current all-in transfer costs and confirming the machine can sustain your specific stream workload. If you want a managed way to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without leaving a computer running or administering server recovery, try StreamNeo’s free first day.
