It does not start OBS before login or, by itself, put a YouTube stream on air. To broadcast, you must also configure OBS with the stream details from YouTube Studio and start streaming in OBS.
What a LaunchAgent does—and what it does not
A LaunchAgent is a per-user launchd job. Apple describes a user agent as a process specific to a logged-in user that runs only while that user is logged in. That makes it suitable for opening OBS in your account’s login session, not for starting OBS before anyone logs in. See Apple’s launchd guide.
Opening the app is only one part of a broadcast. It does not prove that OBS has loaded the right scene collection, has permission to use your camera or microphone, has the correct stream key, or has connected to YouTube. YouTube requires an encoder setup and a separate start action.
Before you configure the LaunchAgent
- Install OBS and confirm its actual path. OBS’s Mac installation instructions describe downloading the macOS DMG and moving OBS to Applications; Homebrew is also offered as an option. The path depends on how and where you installed it. See OBS’s Mac installation instructions.
- Confirm that OBS works when you open it manually in the intended macOS account. Select the scene collection and sources you plan to use, and address any camera or microphone permission prompts before relying on login startup.
- Check OBS’s current requirements for your release of macOS and Mac mini. OBS’s requirements page lists macOS 11 or later, an Intel or Apple silicon CPU, and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics, while warning that compatible hardware may still be inadequate for a particular streaming workload. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity affect what the Mac can handle. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard and test the actual scenes you intend to stream. See OBS system requirements.
- Make a note of your macOS version. Apple’s cited launchd guide is archival, so verify the supported plist format and launchctl workflow for the macOS release installed on your Mac before using commands.
An Apple silicon Mac mini is one possible computer for OBS, not a guaranteed minimum configuration. Apple’s current Mac mini specifications describe available configurations, but they do not establish that a particular model will handle your scenes or that you need to buy a new computer.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create a per-user LaunchAgent for OBS
The example below shows the shape of a user LaunchAgent property list. It is not a tested, drop-in configuration: confirm the current launchd requirements for your macOS version, substitute the exact OBS app path on your Mac, and use a unique label. The example opens the app at login; it does not tell OBS to go live.
- Find the OBS application path. If you installed the app in Applications, the usual path is
/Applications/OBS.app. Verify the location in Finder rather than assuming it; an alternative installation or renamed app will have a different path. - Create the user LaunchAgents folder if needed. Apple identifies
~/Library/LaunchAgentsas a location for user agents. In Finder, use Go > Go to Folder and enter~/Library/LaunchAgents. If the folder is absent, create it in your home Library. - Create a property list with a unique label. Save a file such as
com.example.openobs.plistin that folder, replacing the example label and path with values appropriate to your Mac. Apple’s guide identifiesLabelandProgramArgumentsamong the keys used in its documented job example. Use the current macOS documentation to confirm the accepted configuration and any additional keys before loading it. - Validate the file before loading it. Check that the plist is valid XML and that the application path exists. A malformed plist, duplicate label, or incorrect path can prevent the job from loading or opening OBS.
- Load and test using the workflow for your macOS release. Apple’s older guide describes launchd concepts but should not be treated as definitive for current
launchctlcommands. Consult the documentation for your installed macOS version, then test by logging out and back in to the intended account. Confirm that OBS opens once and that it is the expected installation.
Do not put your YouTube stream key in the LaunchAgent plist. The job’s purpose here is to open the app, and the stream key is account-specific credential material.

Connect OBS to YouTube and start the broadcast
YouTube’s encoder workflow supports software such as OBS as well as hardware encoders. It is suited to workflows such as screen or gameplay capture, external audio/video equipment, and more involved production. Opening OBS with launchd does not complete these broadcast steps.
- Enable live streaming if this is your first broadcast. YouTube says first-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until just before a scheduled stream.
- Open or create a stream in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup to obtain the stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Use OBS’s streaming configuration for the server/stream URL and stream key, as applicable to the selected service and workflow. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in screenshots, logs, example files, or anything public. If it is exposed, replace it through YouTube Studio.
- Configure and test the encoder. Set up the output and scenes for your production, then test the specific resolution, frame rate, encoder, audio, and scene load on your Mac mini. Hardware compatibility alone does not guarantee adequate streaming performance.
- Start streaming in OBS and verify the result in YouTube Studio. The broadcast begins only after the encoder sends the stream and you perform the required start action. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not mean OBS will start a stream on login.
See YouTube’s guidance for encoder streaming and its live-stream setup for the current Studio workflow.

Troubleshoot OBS not opening at login
- Nothing happens after login: Check that the plist is in the intended account’s
~/Library/LaunchAgents, that the label is unique, and that the file is valid for your macOS version. Confirm the app path matches the installed OBS app. - The job loads but OBS does not open: Open the app manually from the path in the plist. A moved, renamed, or differently installed app can make the configured path wrong.
- macOS blocks the LaunchAgent: On macOS 13 and later, check System Settings > General > Login Items for whether the LaunchAgent is allowed. Apple documents this behavior for apps targeting macOS 13 and later; settings may differ on earlier releases. See Apple’s Login Items guidance.
- OBS opens but devices or scenes are missing: Treat startup and production readiness as separate checks. Open OBS in the same account, verify the intended scene collection and sources, and resolve camera or microphone permissions for that macOS release.
- OBS opens but YouTube shows no live stream: Confirm the stream URL and key in OBS, verify the correct stream is open in YouTube Studio, and start streaming from the encoder. A LaunchAgent does not establish that a broadcast has begun.
- The Mac struggles or the stream is unstable: Reduce workload or adjust settings after testing the intended production. The viable resolution and frame rate depend on encoder choice, scenes, and the Mac’s capabilities; the Mac mini name alone does not establish a safe setting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube around the clock, OBS on a Mac mini is not the only route. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams what you uploaded at its original quality, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
