If OBS is the encoder sending your YouTube live feed, OBS must remain open and running for the stream to continue. Minimize or hide OBS to clear your Mac mini’s desktop; do not quit it. If OBS is still running but YouTube has stopped receiving video, check the encoder status, OBS log, and YouTube Live Control Room before changing settings.
First, identify what “closes” means
These actions are different and can have different results:
- Quitting OBS: The encoder stops sending its feed. YouTube says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.”
- Minimizing or hiding OBS: The window disappears from view, but the application can keep encoding and sending the stream.
- Closing YouTube’s compact Live Control Panel: This closes the panel window, not OBS. YouTube documents exiting the panel window as the way to close that compact display.
- OBS crashing or losing its connection: This is not the same as intentionally quitting. Logs and the stream’s status are needed to narrow down the cause.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key to send video to YouTube. Settings such as Auto-start and Auto-stop affect how stream control works; they do not keep OBS encoding after the application has been quit. Fix it if you quit OBS
- Open OBS again on the Mac mini.
- Confirm that OBS is set to the intended YouTube stream and that the correct stream key is selected.
- Start streaming in OBS, then check YouTube Live Control Room for an incoming feed or preview.
- Leave OBS running for the duration of the broadcast. Minimize or hide its window if you do not want it on screen.
If you need the stream to continue after OBS is quit, OBS cannot remain the active encoder for that feed. You need a separate encoder that continues sending video independently of OBS.

If you only closed the YouTube Live Control Panel
Check whether OBS is still open and streaming. If it is, look in YouTube Live Control Room to see whether YouTube is receiving the feed and whether the live event is still active. Closing the compact panel does not, by itself, mean you quit the encoder.
If OBS is open but YouTube shows no feed
- In OBS, check whether streaming is still active and review the current log for connection errors or other reported problems.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, check whether a feed is arriving and whether the event has been ended.
- Compare the OBS status with YouTube’s event status. If OBS reports that it is streaming but YouTube receives no feed, investigate the connection and event state rather than assuming OBS was quit.
Do not change encoder settings as a guess: the available information does not establish a particular Mac mini, macOS version, stream key, network device, or setting as the cause.

If OBS crashed or disappeared unexpectedly
Collect the OBS log and the macOS crash report before troubleshooting further. Those records can help distinguish an application crash from a lost connection or a stream that was ended in YouTube. The available documentation does not establish a Mac mini-specific crash cause, so a particular encoder setting cannot be promised as a fix.
OBS lists Intel and Apple Silicon CPUs and macOS 11 Big Sur or later among its system requirements, while cautioning that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee a system can stream or record under a particular workload. Check the current OBS system requirements and macOS compatibility table for your installed OBS release and operating system; the compatibility table changes over time.

OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox support on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, including H.264 streaming support on Apple Silicon. Encoder choice may affect performance, but it does not remove the need for the active OBS process to keep running. See OBS’s hardware encoding documentation.
If OBS must be able to close while the stream continues
Use a separate encoder that can send its own feed without relying on OBS. A hardware encoder is one possible category; confirm that the specific device supports your input sources, resolution and frame rate, encoding format, connection requirements, and standalone operation. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but a hardware encoder is not required to fix the ordinary case where OBS was simply quit.
