OBS Studio is a sensible first macOS app to evaluate if you want to send prerecorded video to YouTube Live. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming, but the available evidence does not establish OBS—or any Mac app—as the definitive best choice for unattended, around-the-clock playback. An app also cannot guarantee that a Mac, internet connection, or stream will stay online indefinitely.
If you want the stream to continue without keeping a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud.
Which option fits a 24/7 prerecorded stream?
| Approach | What it means | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio on a Mac | The Mac runs an encoder that sends the video feed to YouTube Live. | You control the local setup, but the Mac, app, and network must remain available. Confirm the current OBS version handles your media source or playlist and looping needs as intended. |
| StreamNeo cloud playout | Upload prerecorded video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and start the stream from the cloud. | The computer at home does not need to stay on. StreamNeo’s plans differ by duration, not by streaming quality. |
OBS is a candidate, not a proven winner in a head-to-head comparison of current macOS apps for playlist looping, automatic restarts, or long-term uptime. YouTube’s guidance supports software encoders generally; it does not rank them for this specific use. If you choose OBS, test the exact media playback and recovery behavior you need before relying on it for a continuous broadcast. The OBS Project provides a Help Portal.
Check YouTube eligibility before configuring an encoder
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check your channel’s eligibility and prepare the broadcast through YouTube Live Control Room before starting the encoder. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.

Set up OBS and YouTube Live
YouTube’s setup guidance applies to encoder-based streams generally. Menu labels can vary by OBS version, so use OBS’s current controls for adding and configuring your media source; verify looping behavior rather than assuming it will continue after a file ends.
- Prepare the video and audio. Select the prerecorded video and check that the intended audio is present throughout. Confirm that playback can repeat as needed in your current OBS setup. Test transitions or gaps at the end and start of a loop.
- Create or prepare the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Live Control Room, prepare a stream and obtain its stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it. YouTube detects encoder settings by default; manual resolution and frame-rate settings are available with a custom stream key. Follow the current Control Room prompts to connect your encoder.
- Configure the encoder to match the content and connection. YouTube supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds. Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it: YouTube recommends the secure protocol, which Google describes as RTMP tunneled through SSL.
- Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended. For AV1 or H.265 at 1080p30, it lists 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended. These are video ingest bitrates, not a complete household bandwidth target. Leave headroom for network fluctuations and other devices, and consult YouTube’s current encoder settings table for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs.
- Check the local Mac’s availability. Prevent sleep or other power settings from interrupting the broadcast, and make sure the Mac can remain connected to the network for the planned duration. These are operational requirements of a local setup, not a guarantee that OBS will recover from every interruption.
- Test before the public broadcast. Run a representative test with the same video, audio, and encoder settings. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health, verify that viewers can hear and see the intended content, and confirm that playback repeats correctly. YouTube’s live-streaming tips advise testing and monitoring quality; they do not promise unattended uptime.
Keep the stream within YouTube’s rules
A continuous loop is still a YouTube live stream. The channel and broadcast must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Make sure you have the rights needed to stream the video, music, and other material, and check YouTube’s current content rules before broadcasting. A 24/7 loop is not automatically eligible for monetization; do not assume that continuous playback satisfies monetization requirements.

Troubleshoot common stream problems
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Confirm that the stream is prepared in Live Control Room, the correct stream key is entered in the encoder, and the encoder is attempting the protocol YouTube expects. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder. |
| Stream health reports instability or the feed drops | Check whether the Mac remains awake and online, then compare the encoder bitrate with sustained upload capacity. Reduce the bitrate or output settings if the connection cannot sustain them, and test again. |
| The picture buffers or looks poor | Review the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s published settings. Check that the upload connection has headroom beyond the video bitrate. |
| Viewers hear no audio or the loop has a gap | Inspect the source file’s audio and the encoder’s audio configuration. Test the end-to-start transition in the current OBS version; the sources here do not establish a universal OBS playlist-loop setting or behavior. |
| The stream stops after a Mac, app, or network interruption | Reconnect the encoder and inspect the Control Room status. A local encoder depends on the Mac and connection; the cited YouTube and OBS guidance does not guarantee automatic recovery or uninterrupted operation. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a Mac or home connection to stay on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping to YouTube from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
