You can reduce the chance that Windows Update restarts your streaming PC during a broadcast, but you cannot block updates and restarts forever. Set Windows active hours to cover your stream, use Pause updates only as a short-term bridge, and install updates and restart during a planned maintenance window between broadcasts. Then verify the PC and YouTube stream are back online.
Set active hours to cover your stream
Active hours tell Windows when you normally use the PC, making an automatic restart during those hours less likely. On the stream PC, open Settings > Windows Update, then find Active hours and set the period to cover the full broadcast window, including setup and shutdown time. Depending on your Windows version and rollout, the labels and available controls may differ; use the active-hours and restart controls shown on that PC.
If Windows says a restart is required, use its restart scheduling control to choose a time during your maintenance window rather than leaving the restart unplanned. Active hours reduce disruption risk; they do not guarantee that a restart can never occur. Microsoft’s [Windows Update FAQ](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/updates-lifecycle/windows-update-faq) explains that updates cannot be stopped entirely through Windows Update settings.
Use Pause updates only as a temporary bridge
If you need to keep the machine from updating during a particularly important run of broadcasts, pause updates temporarily. Go to Settings > Windows Update and use the pause control to select an end date. Microsoft’s current guidance allows a pause of up to 35 days; when it expires, Windows checks for, downloads, and installs available updates. Choose an end date before your next planned maintenance window, then resume updates and deliberately install them and restart. A pause delays updates; it is not a permanent shutdown. Avoid disabling Windows Update services or relying on a pause indefinitely. Microsoft says updates will eventually need to be downloaded and installed to help keep the device secure. Leaving a streaming PC unpatched trades a possible interruption for an accumulating security and reliability risk.
Make a maintenance window part of the broadcast schedule
The dependable operating approach is to reserve time between broadcasts to update and reboot the PC. Active hours and a temporary pause can help you reach that window, but the update still needs to be completed.

- Choose a gap between broadcasts. Allow enough time for the update, restart, and a test broadcast or stream check; duration varies by device and update.
- Install pending updates and restart. Use Settings > Windows Update and follow the available install and restart controls.
- Confirm the PC is ready. Check that Windows has returned, the streaming application or encoder is running as intended, and the network connection is available.
- Verify YouTube before resuming the 24/7 schedule. Preview or test the stream, then check stream health and any messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
This workflow follows Microsoft’s requirement that updates eventually be installed and YouTube’s guidance to test and monitor a stream. It is not a guarantee against every unexpected outage.
Check YouTube stream health separately
YouTube’s Live Control Room can help identify encoder or connection problems through stream health status, real-time metrics, and messages. Those controls diagnose the broadcast; they do not control Windows Update or prevent Windows from restarting the PC. YouTube recommends testing the setup in advance, choosing encoder quality that fits the available connection, and monitoring health during the event.

For encoder configuration, YouTube’s [live encoder settings](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702?hl=en) cover supported settings and protocols. The guidance includes RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encryption into Google’s servers. If you make a local recording, check it after a problem as well; a recording can help distinguish a local encoder issue from a YouTube delivery issue, but it cannot prevent a Windows restart.
What Windows 11’s 2026 restart change does—and does not—mean
Microsoft’s article published August 14, 2026 describes a change for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1: updates released on and after July 28, 2026 group several restart-requiring categories with the monthly security update. The rollout is gradual, so the behavior may not yet be present on every device.

Microsoft also identifies exceptions that can install sooner, including Defender security intelligence updates, AI component updates, critical or expedited driver updates, and emergency or out-of-band updates. The combined update will not be held indefinitely. This change may simplify restart timing on eligible, updated devices, but it is not a promise of uninterrupted 24/7 streaming; keep a maintenance window and check the controls on the actual PC. Troubleshoot an interruption or an unexpected restart
- Windows shows a restart is required during a broadcast: Check active hours and schedule the restart for the next maintenance window. Do not assume a pause prevents every future restart.
- Updates resume after a pause: That is expected when the selected end date arrives. Resume deliberately, install the pending updates, and reboot during the planned gap.
- The PC restarted and the stream is gone: Confirm Windows has fully booted, reconnect or restart the encoder as needed, and inspect YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and messages before going live again.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Test the encoder and network setup, review YouTube’s messages, and choose settings appropriate for the connection. YouTube monitoring cannot change Windows restart policy.
- The menus do not match these steps: Labels and options can vary by Windows version, rollout, edition, or managed-device policy. Check the Windows Update screen on the stream PC; a workplace-managed device may also have administrator-controlled policies.
