It depends on what you mean by “quality” and which encoder and streaming platform you use. Viewers’ playback quality and the resolution or bitrate your encoder sends are separate things. YouTube says it automatically creates multiple output formats for live streams, so viewers may already have lower-bandwidth playback options even when you leave the source stream unchanged. Changing the encoder’s active output settings is different: there is no universal guarantee that it can be done without a reconnect or interruption.

First decide which quality you want to change

Viewer playback quality

If the lesson looks sharp for some viewers but buffers for others, you may not need to change the stream encoder. A platform can transcode one incoming stream into different resolutions, frame rates, and bitrates for playback. OBS describes this as transcoding, and YouTube documents automatic transcoding for its live streams. Availability and playback controls depend on the platform and stream. See OBS’s transcoding overview and YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

Source stream quality

If you want to change what your encoder sends—such as resolution, frame rate, or bitrate—you are changing the stream input, not simply a viewer’s playback choice. Whether those settings can be changed while the broadcast continues depends on the encoder, its version, the destination platform, and how the stream is connected. Identify those details before changing anything; do not assume an active stream will accept new output settings uninterrupted.

What “recorded lesson” means

A 24/7 recorded lesson stream might also be saved as a local recording, archived by the platform, or be a scheduled loop of pre-recorded video. Those are different arrangements. Check where the recording is made and whether changing encoder output also affects it. The guidance below concerns a live stream’s incoming quality; it cannot establish what a particular local recording or platform archive will do.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Before changing an active source stream

  1. Identify the full setup. Note the encoder or streaming software and version, destination platform, ingest method, current resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and where any recording is saved.
  2. Check live-change behavior in the product documentation. Look specifically for whether resolution, frame rate, and bitrate changes apply to an active output or require a reconnect or restart. If the documentation does not confirm uninterrupted changes, treat interruption as possible.
  3. Choose a continuity plan. For a class that cannot be interrupted, test the proposed change on a non-critical stream first. If a test is not possible, wait until a suitable maintenance window rather than relying on a generic promise of a seamless change. Use a redundant workflow only if your platform and encoder document one.
  4. Record the starting settings. Keep the current values and any relevant stream or recording configuration so you can restore them if the new output causes problems.

Choose settings for YouTube Live

For YouTube Live, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate are encoder choices. YouTube’s recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so values should not be carried over blindly to another platform or codec. YouTube recommends choosing settings your connection can sustain, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health. Its current guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Use the complete, current table at YouTube’s encoder settings page.

Example YouTube ingest setting H.264 recommended bitrate AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 8 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 21 Mbps 15 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 34 Mbps 24 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended ingest figures for the listed codecs, resolutions, and frame rates—not universal targets. Use YouTube’s page for the full table and any updated guidance. A bitrate above what your upload connection can sustain can destabilize the stream; the highest setting is not automatically the best choice for a continuous class.

If you use OBS Studio

In OBS, distinguish Base (Canvas) Resolution from Output (Scaled) Resolution. OBS says the output-scaled resolution is the size sent to the stream or recording. Streaming video bitrate is another output setting. Changing these values may change what OBS sends, but OBS’s overview does not guarantee that every active destination will accept such changes without reconnecting. Check the live-change behavior for your OBS version and destination before applying a change to a critical stream. OBS also notes that 60 fps can be more taxing on system resources than 30 fps. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Apply and verify a change safely

  1. Make only a supported change. Follow the exact instructions for your encoder and destination. If they require reconnecting, restarting output, or starting a new broadcast, there is no supported way to treat that as a guaranteed uninterrupted hot change.
  2. Check the receiving platform’s stream health. YouTube’s health indicators and Live Streaming API can report issues such as high or low bitrate, resolution mismatch or unsupported resolution, keyframe frequency, and ingestion starvation. YouTube warns that insufficient incoming video can lead to buffering. See LiveStreams status documentation and YouTube’s configuration issue descriptions.
  3. Watch the encoder’s connection status. In OBS, an increasing dropped-frame counter and a yellow or red connection indicator point to an unstable connection or insufficient capacity for the configured bitrate. OBS says it drops frames to avoid buffering. See the OBS Help Portal.
  4. Confirm the result from the viewer side. Check whether the intended playback choices are available and whether the live image and audio remain stable. A healthy source feed and platform-created playback renditions are related, but they are not the same setting.

Troubleshoot common quality-change problems

  • The stream stops or reconnects when settings change: The encoder or platform may not support changing that output parameter live. Restore the previous settings if needed, then follow the product’s documented restart or transition procedure during a planned window.
  • YouTube reports high or low bitrate: Compare the incoming bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check the encoder output and whether the upload connection can sustain it.
  • YouTube reports a resolution mismatch or unsupported resolution: Confirm the encoder is sending a resolution supported by the destination and that its configured output matches the intended stream settings.
  • YouTube flags keyframe frequency: Check the encoder’s keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance: two seconds recommended, no more than four seconds.
  • The stream buffers or OBS shows dropped frames: Check connection stability and whether the configured bitrate exceeds available upload capacity. Lowering the source bitrate may help, but do so only through a change procedure supported by the encoder and platform.
  • The source looks acceptable but some viewers struggle: Check whether the platform provides transcoded playback options before changing the source. A lower playback rendition may solve a viewer bandwidth issue without changing the incoming stream.

YouTube’s health issue guide describes the platform’s reported conditions and suggested remedies. An alert identifies a problem to investigate; it does not establish that a particular live change will be interruption-free.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the lesson is a pre-recorded video you want to keep live on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud rather than from a computer at home. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can stay off. StreamNeo streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. This is an option for an uploaded-video loop, not a way to change the active output of a separate encoder mid-broadcast. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
