First find out which OBS counter is rising: Dropped Frames (Network), Rendering Lag, or Encoding Overloaded. They point to different problems, and the title alone does not establish that a Mac mini is underpowered. Check YouTube’s stream health, test sustained upload capacity, and then investigate scene-rendering or encoder load if OBS points there. Change one setting at a time and test with representative motion and audio.
Identify which kind of frames OBS is dropping
Open OBS’s Stats window while the stream is running and note the exact counter or warning that increases. A smooth preview does not prove the route from your Mac mini to YouTube’s ingest server is stable.
| OBS symptom | What it indicates | First place to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped Frames (Network) | The connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Upload capacity, connection path, router and network equipment. |
| Rendering Lag | OBS is struggling to composite or render the scene in time. | Scene complexity, sources, filters and competing GPU workloads. |
| Encoding Overloaded | The selected encoder cannot encode the output fast enough. | Encoder choice, output resolution and frame rate, and system load. |
Network drops are not evidence by themselves of CPU or encoder overload. More than one problem can occur at once, so use the OBS log and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages to corroborate the counter before changing settings. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide and OBS encoding-performance guidance.
Fix network dropped frames first when that counter is rising
OBS describes network dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. Work through the actual network path from the Mac mini to the router and internet connection rather than treating it as an OBS rendering fault.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check sustained upload capacity. Test outbound bandwidth, not just download speed, at the times the stream usually falters. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate. Shared networks can limit one stream even when the connection’s overall advertised or office-wide speed appears ample. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Try Ethernet. If practical, connect the Mac mini directly to the router with a known-good cable and compare the OBS network-drop counter and YouTube stream health. Wi-Fi can be unstable; a wired connection helps isolate it but cannot fix an ISP or router problem.
- Inspect network equipment and software. Check the cable, modem, router, switch, extender and network interface for faults. Temporarily rule out a VPN or network/security software that could interfere with the stream, following your organization’s policies.
- Ask whether the connection is shared or disrupted. Other traffic and intermittent network interruptions can consume headroom or break the connection. If the OBS troubleshooting steps do not resolve persistent drops, contact your ISP.
- Lower bitrate only as a fallback. OBS lists dynamic bitrate adjustment as a fallback when the underlying connection problem cannot be fixed. A lower bitrate can reduce picture quality; it does not repair a faulty or congested network path.
OBS documents its Network Optimizations and TCP pacing options as Windows-only, so they are not Mac troubleshooting steps. The OBS recommendations for network drops and equipment are in its connection troubleshooting guide.
Match YouTube output settings to the upload you can sustain
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Its H.264 bitrate table lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; the listed minimums are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps, respectively. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not guarantees that a particular Mac mini or internet connection can sustain those settings. Check YouTube’s current table for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate at YouTube’s live encoder settings.

- Use CBR and set the keyframe interval to two seconds for the YouTube RTMP/RTMPS guidance.
- Select the bitrate for the actual codec, resolution and frame rate, then verify there is about 20% upload headroom.
- Test a representative scene with its normal motion and audio; watch OBS Stats and YouTube stream health during the test.
Do not treat the minimum bitrate in YouTube’s table as a promise of acceptable image quality or a cure for unstable networking. If lowering output settings is necessary, change one variable at a time and observe the counters.
Investigate rendering lag and encoder overload separately
If Rendering Lag rises
OBS has to composite and render the scene. Numerous sources, filters, large browser sources, complex scenes and other GPU-heavy applications can increase that load. On macOS, inspect Activity Monitor for applications using substantial GPU resources; close or pause unnecessary competing work, then simplify the OBS scene or source workload if needed. If the render load remains high, lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS notes that moving from 60 fps to 30 fps can reduce rendering and encoding work. See OBS’s performance troubleshooting guide.

If Encoding Overloaded rises
Do not select an encoder based on the words “Mac mini” alone. The title does not identify the computer’s processor architecture, OBS version or available encoder choices. Check Apple menu → About This Mac, inspect the encoder options in OBS, and review the OBS log.
OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox streaming with H.264 on Apple Silicon Macs. Its guidance says streaming through Apple VideoToolbox is not supported on Intel Macs because of constant-bitrate requirements, and directs Intel Mac users to x264. Confirm which architecture you have and use the encoder supported for it; this is not a universal encoder prescription for every Mac mini. Details are in OBS’s hardware encoding documentation.

Account for recording in a 24/7 workflow
YouTube says a live stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the documentary broadcast must be preserved, use and verify a local recording rather than relying on YouTube’s automatic archive. A local recording consumes storage and adds system workload, so include it in a representative stability test. The capacity needed depends on your recording settings and available storage; the cited guidance does not quantify it. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Likely branch | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Network dropped-frames counter rises or connection status changes | Upload path or ingest connection | Check YouTube stream health and sustained upload headroom; test Ethernet and inspect network equipment. |
| Rendering Lag rises while network drops do not | Scene rendering or GPU contention | Check Activity Monitor, reduce competing GPU use, simplify sources and filters, or lower resolution/frame rate. |
| Encoding Overloaded appears | Encoder capacity or unsuitable encoder selection | Check Mac architecture, OBS’s available encoders and the log; use the architecture-specific OBS guidance. |
| YouTube does not retain the full 24/7 broadcast | Automatic archive duration limit | Use and verify a local recording if preservation matters, and test its added workload. |
| The fault persists after checking bitrate and local equipment | Possible ISP or wider network issue | Contact the ISP with the times and observed symptoms; keep the OBS log and stream-health messages for diagnosis. |
