To bring an FFmpeg YouTube stream back after a VPS reboot, run FFmpeg as a systemd service, enable that service at boot, and configure it to restart after qualifying failures. Then verify two separate things: that systemd launched FFmpeg and that YouTube Studio is receiving healthy media for the intended broadcast. A running process alone does not prove the stream recovered.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
Enabling a systemd unit makes it eligible to start during normal boot. A policy such as Restart=on-failure can relaunch FFmpeg when the process exits with a failure. Those measures supervise the process; they do not repair a missing input file, an invalid stream key, a network outage, or an FFmpeg process that remains alive while its output is stalled.
Think of recovery in two layers:
- Process recovery: systemd starts FFmpeg at boot and can restart it after a qualifying exit.
- Media-path recovery: FFmpeg can read the intended source, connect to YouTube, authenticate, and deliver decodable media. Verify this in YouTube Studio.
For a long-running service, systemd project guidance describes Restart=on-failure or Restart=on-abnormal as common recommended choices. Exact behavior, delays, and start limits depend on the installed systemd version; check man systemd.service and man systemd.unit on your VPS. See the systemd project NEWS.
Prepare the FFmpeg command and YouTube settings
Collect the host-specific values
Before creating a unit, identify the absolute path to FFmpeg, the Linux account that should run it, the input file or URL, any working directory it needs, and the output destination and credential source. Do not copy a command from another host without checking its paths, codecs, input, and FFmpeg build.

Use the current ingest endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS and advises testing before an event and monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate guidance varies by profile and resolution, so use the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table alongside the settings displayed in Live Control Room rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
Confirm that the stream key belongs to the broadcast you intend to resume. Keep it out of publicly shared unit files, logs, and shell history. A root-readable environment file is one possible approach, but environment variables may be visible to privileged diagnostics. Depending on the systemd version and security needs, systemd credentials or another dedicated secret mechanism may be preferable.
Check the local FFmpeg build
Run ffmpeg -version and inspect local help for any options you plan to use. FFmpeg’s online references may describe a newer build than the package installed on your VPS. Its HTTP reconnect options concern HTTP input behavior; they do not automatically provide output recovery for a YouTube stream. Output and protocol recovery depend on the muxer, protocol, and build. Check the documentation matching your installed version, including FFmpeg’s command documentation and its protocol documentation.

Create a systemd service unit
The following is a template, not a ready-to-run universal command. Replace the example paths and placeholders with the values for your VPS. Keep the stream key in a suitably restricted secret source rather than writing a real key into this file.
Recommended Free Tools
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube live stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamuser
WorkingDirectory=/path/to/working-directory
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [your input and encoding options] [your RTMPS output and protected key source]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Adapt the unit to the host
User=should name a non-root account with permission to read the input and required configuration. Use the real service account, not the example name.WorkingDirectory=is useful when the command relies on relative paths; otherwise, use absolute paths for inputs and executables.ExecStart=should call FFmpeg directly where practical, so systemd supervises the encoder process itself. Replace the bracketed text with your actual FFmpeg arguments and output setup.Restart=on-failureasks systemd to restart after qualifying failures.RestartSec=10adds a modest delay before a retry; choose a delay appropriate to the source and destination.WantedBy=multi-user.targetis a common boot target for a continuously running service. Distribution conventions can differ, so verify the target and unit semantics on your system.
Order startup after a usable network only when needed
network.target does not mean that a connection is operational. If FFmpeg must reach YouTube as it starts, ordering the service after network-online.target and pulling in that target with Wants=network-online.target may help. This only works as intended if the host’s network stack provides and enables the relevant wait-online behavior. Check the systemd boot documentation and your distribution’s network configuration. Network ordering cannot guarantee that DNS, routing, the provider, or YouTube is reachable.
Install, enable, and start the service
- Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service, adjusting the filename if you prefer a different service name. - Ask systemd to reload unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable it for future boots and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service. Enabling alone does not start the service immediately. - Check whether the service is active:
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Review recent service output:
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager. To follow new messages, usesudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -f.
Because the unit runs with systemd’s environment rather than your interactive shell, check that every executable and input path exists and that the service account can access required files.

Test a reboot and verify the broadcast
- Schedule a reboot when a stream interruption is acceptable. Do not use a live event as the first test of a new unit.
- After the VPS returns, inspect the unit with
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.serviceand its journal withsudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -b --no-pager. - Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that the intended broadcast is receiving media and reporting healthy stream status. Confirm the broadcast state you expect rather than assuming that a restarted encoder automatically resumed it.
- If the process is active but Studio does not show incoming media, diagnose the input, network connection, output configuration, and key separately.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; its encoder guidance is the reference for current ingest and encoding recommendations.

The service is disabled or fails immediately
Check systemctl is-enabled ffmpeg-youtube.service, then inspect systemctl status and the unit journal. Confirm that the ExecStart executable and input paths exist, the unit syntax is valid, and the configured service user can read the input and secrets. A different PATH under systemd is a common reason a command that works in a shell fails as a service; prefer absolute paths.

YouTube receives no media or the wrong broadcast
Confirm that the key is current, private, and associated with the intended broadcast in Live Control Room. Check that the output endpoint matches YouTube’s current configuration and that the input is available. Look at FFmpeg’s journal output for authentication, input, or connection errors, then check Studio’s stream health rather than relying on the process status alone.
The process stays active but output has stalled
Systemd generally reacts to process exit; it may not detect an encoder that remains running while media delivery has stopped. First determine whether the problem is input-side or output-side. FFmpeg reconnect options for HTTP inputs do not establish that an RTMPS output can recover. If you consider output recovery options, a watchdog, or external monitoring, verify support in the installed FFmpeg build and test behavior against the actual source and destination. A watchdog also needs a reliable definition of unhealthy media; process existence alone is insufficient.
The service is restarting repeatedly
Inspect the journal and the systemd start-limit status before repeatedly forcing restarts. A bad key, missing source, or unavailable endpoint will not be fixed by a fast retry loop. Correct the cause, then start the service again if needed. Consult the installed man systemd.service and man systemd.unit for restart and start-limit behavior.
