First confirm your channel is eligible, use rain audio you have rights to stream, then test the preview and monitor the broadcast. YouTube does not promise that any setup will run without interruption around the clock, so plan for monitoring and possible disconnections.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance also sets a minimum age of 16.
- An encoder workflow on a computer or another suitable setup. YouTube lists encoder streaming as an option and notes that encoders can carry overlays or work with external hardware; its guidance does not prescribe a particular encoder or a guaranteed 24-hour configuration.
- A black image and a rain recording prepared as a continuous audio/video feed. These are practical choices for this format, not YouTube requirements.
- Permission to stream the rain audio and any other material in the broadcast.
YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary for livestreaming, but its public guidance does not set minimum computer specifications, internet speeds, power-backup requirements, or storage for this particular use. Choose an encoder and operating setup that can send your intended feed and be monitored reliably under your local power and network conditions.
Set up the black screen and rain audio
Prepare the visual and audio
Use an intentionally static black image as the video source and arrange the rain track so it plays continuously for the listening experience you want. Check the whole audio path for unexpected silence, abrupt cuts, or a loop point that would be distracting. These are production recommendations, not platform specifications.
Use a recording you made or audio you are authorized to stream. YouTube’s livestream terms require you to have the necessary rights for the live content. If you use licensed third-party audio, check that its license covers livestream use, territory, duration, monetization, and attribution where applicable.

Create the YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Follow the current on-screen options for the broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream settings into the corresponding fields in your encoder. The URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key identifies the stream. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or show it on screen.
- Set the encoder’s video source to the black image and its audio source to the rain track, then start sending the feed to YouTube.
- Wait for the Live Control Room preview and check that the image is black and the rain is audible at a comfortable level. Verify the result on the channel’s watch page and on another device before relying on it.
- For a first test, YouTube recommends trying a test livestream, which may be public or unlisted. Check current Studio choices and visibility settings before starting.
Choose settings and monitor the stream
Latency
YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering and that it matters less when the creator is not interacting with viewers. A sleep stream is generally noninteractive, so prioritize a stable, comfortable playback experience over minimizing conversational delay.
Long-running operation
YouTube recommends continuous monitoring of audio and video quality. During your test and any live run, check that the picture remains present, the rain has not fallen silent, and the broadcast has not disconnected. Monitoring and checking for these failures are prudent operating practices; they do not guarantee uninterrupted service. YouTube’s public guidance does not document one configuration that will keep a stream live 24/7 in every account, region, or encoder setup.

If you rely on a locally run encoder, account for the computer, power, and network remaining available. Plan how you will notice and respond to a dropped connection, and verify the current stream status in YouTube Studio rather than assuming the broadcast is still live.
Copyright and Content ID: protect the broadcast
YouTube scans livestreams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn you, interrupt or terminate the stream, or take other enforcement action. A license or purchase receipt does not necessarily prevent a live interruption: YouTube says licensed third-party content may still require the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.

- For third-party rain audio, confirm the license explicitly permits livestreaming and retain documentation of the permission.
- Ask the rights holder whether your channel must be added to a Content ID allowlist before you go live.
- Do not assume a “free” label or an attribution line prevents a Content ID claim. YouTube’s safe-music guidance says music is safe when it is public domain or you have permission from its copyright owner, and advises checking third-party licenses.
- If a claim or interruption occurs, review the notice in YouTube Studio and contact the rights holder or follow YouTube’s dispute process only when you have a valid basis.
Monetization and originality
Do not assume that a black-screen rain stream will qualify for monetization or produce a particular income. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. In its July 15, 2025 policy update, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under the policy. Reused-content review is separate from copyright: permission to use audio does not by itself establish monetization eligibility.
YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible live-stream revenue features, depending on channel access and settings. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. If monetization matters to you, be ready to explain how the soundscape and presentation were created and what makes the stream your own. Original rain recordings or a deliberately designed soundscape may help demonstrate authorship, but no particular creative choice guarantees policy approval.
