For a 1080p YouTube loop, set FFmpeg to a constant 30 or 60 fps, use a 2-second keyframe interval, and choose a video bitrate your upload connection can sustain continuously. YouTube’s H.264 guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 or 17 Mbps for 1080p60; its minimums are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps, respectively. Add audio bandwidth and leave room for normal network variation: hitting a published bitrate target alone does not guarantee a stable stream.

Choose the frame rate and bitrate

The figures below are YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations, not a promise about viewer playback quality. YouTube may transcode the incoming stream before viewers watch it. The table’s figures were accessed October 3, 2026; check the current Live Control Room guidance before going live because platform settings can change.

Resolution and frame rate Codec Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
1080p30 H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p30 AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

H.264 is a practical default when your FFmpeg build and ingest setup support it. YouTube lists lower bitrate recommendations for AV1 and H.265, but use those only if your encoder and YouTube ingest path support the codec you select. Do not treat those figures as interchangeable across codecs.

For a long-running stream, select a rate your real connection can sustain rather than relying on a brief speed-test peak. The required capacity includes audio as well as video, and spare capacity helps absorb normal network variation. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality the connection can reliably maintain; it does not publish a numeric headroom rule.

Set YouTube-oriented encoding options

Rate control and keyframes

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for RTMP/RTMPS and a keyframe every 2 seconds; it says not to exceed 4 seconds. At a constant 30 fps, a 2-second group of pictures (GOP) is 60 frames; at 60 fps, it is 120 frames. In FFmpeg, these GOP lengths are commonly specified with -g 60 or -g 120.

Options such as -b:v and -maxrate set bitrate-related parameters, but they do not by themselves prove that an encoder is producing strict CBR. Confirm how the locally installed encoder implements rate control and enable its CBR mode if following YouTube’s exact recommendation. FFmpeg encoder options differ, particularly for hardware encoders, so consult the documentation for the encoder you actually use.

Audio

YouTube’s published stereo recommendation is AAC or MP3 audio at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. The example below uses AAC at those settings. Audio bitrate is separate from the video bitrate, so include it when checking that the upload connection has enough sustained capacity.

Protocol and stream key

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Get the current ingest endpoint and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room and replace the example placeholders with those values. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, share it, or leave it in a publicly accessible command history or script.

Loop a video file with FFmpeg

This is an illustrative command for an existing file containing video and audio, not a tested command. Validate it with your installed FFmpeg version and encoder before relying on it for a continuous stream.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i input.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
  1. Replace the input filename. Change input.mp4 to the path of your video. The optional map, -map 0:a:0?, allows the command to proceed if the input has no audio track.
  2. Set the correct output destination. Replace the endpoint and key placeholders with the current RTMPS details shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
  3. Match the source and target frame rate. This example targets 30 fps with -r 30, a 14 Mbps video bitrate, and a 60-frame GOP. For a 1080p60 stream, use -r 60, -b:v 17M, -maxrate 17M, -bufsize 34M, and -g 120. Check that the video itself and the encoder can support the chosen frame rate.
  4. Understand the loop and pacing flags. -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to loop the input indefinitely. -re reads a file at real-time speed so it is paced like a live stream. Do not add -re blindly to a live capture device or an already-live input.
  5. Check option placement. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next specified file. Input options belong before the relevant -i; output encoding options go after the input and before the output destination. FFmpeg documentation emphasizes that command-line option order matters.

The example’s -bufsize is twice the video bitrate, but the command should not be assumed to enforce strict CBR on every FFmpeg build. Review the selected encoder’s rate-control options and verify the actual output behavior locally.

Test before leaving the stream running

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the stream and retrieve the current ingest endpoint and key.
  2. Run a representative test using the same video, frame rate, audio, bitrate, and network you intend to use for the loop. Include both audio and movement rather than testing only a static picture.
  3. Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages while the test is live. YouTube’s guidance is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream. During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
  4. Check that the connection can sustain the chosen total bitrate over time. If the stream reports unstable ingest, reduce the video bitrate or frame rate and test again; a short speed test is not evidence that the connection will hold for a long session.
  5. Verify the loop boundary, audio continuity, and that the stream remains live after the source video reaches its end and starts again.

Handle temporary RTMP output interruptions

FFmpeg documents an optional FIFO muxer pattern for attempting recovery from transient RTMP output interruptions. A representative option sequence is -f fifo -fifo_format flv -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1. This is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming: it cannot resolve insufficient sustained upload capacity, an overloaded encoder, a power failure, or a YouTube-side outage. FIFO support and exact option behavior depend on the local FFmpeg build, so verify the installed version’s documentation and test the configuration before using it unattended.

Troubleshoot common instability

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
YouTube reports unstable or insufficient incoming bitrate The connection cannot sustain the selected video-plus-audio rate, or has significant variation. Test over a longer period on the actual streaming connection. Lower the video bitrate or frame rate until the ingest is stable; do not use a peak speed-test result as the target.
Video looks uneven or keyframes arrive too infrequently The GOP does not match the intended frame rate or exceeds YouTube’s recommended cadence. Use a 2-second GOP: -g 60 at 30 fps or -g 120 at 60 fps. YouTube says not to exceed a 4-second keyframe interval.
Audio is missing The input has no audio track, mapping or encoding is wrong, or the selected audio settings are unsupported. Check the input tracks and FFmpeg output. The optional audio map in the example allows a file without audio to proceed, but it cannot create audio that is not present.
FFmpeg exits or fails to reconnect after a brief disconnect The local build or output path may not support the selected FIFO recovery options, or the problem is more than a transient interruption. Check the installed FFmpeg documentation and build components. Test a supported recovery configuration; address upload capacity, encoder load, power, or platform availability separately.
The stream stops when the file ends The input loop was not enabled or the command did not parse as intended. Confirm -stream_loop -1 is before the input’s -i, then test through a complete file loop.
Stream key or ingest connection is rejected The endpoint or key may be incorrect, outdated, or copied with unintended characters. Copy the current RTMPS endpoint and key from YouTube Live Control Room, keeping the key confidential.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube loop without keeping a computer or home connection running, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud.
