Use an encoder such as OBS Studio to combine a still image with your MP3 archive, then send the resulting video-and-audio stream to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The image must be part of the video signal; an image alone is not a live stream. Before broadcasting, confirm that the archive can play in the intended order, test the audio and YouTube preview, and make sure you have rights to rebroadcast every recording and clip.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel set up for live streaming and the stream key for the broadcast.
  • An encoder such as OBS Studio, installed on a computer that can remain connected for the full broadcast.
  • The MP3 files in the order you want them to play, plus a still image to represent the show.
  • A reliable upload connection appropriate to your chosen video resolution and bitrate.
  • Permission to rebroadcast all material in the archive, including music, excerpts, and other third-party audio.

YouTube lists MP3 or AAC as supported audio codecs, but its encoder guidance also calls for video. Your encoder therefore needs to render the static image as the video component while sending the archive audio. YouTube’s supported video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Prepare and review the podcast archive

Arrange the audio

Decide the playback order before opening the encoder. If the archive should repeat, decide whether to repeat the complete sequence or stop after one pass. The control for sequencing and looping depends on the software and its version; verify that your chosen encoder can play the files in the way you intend, then test the whole sequence rather than assuming a playlist will advance or repeat automatically.

Choose the image

Select a still image that you are entitled to use and that clearly identifies the program. The encoder will hold it as the stream’s visual while the audio changes. Check the image in the YouTube preview, since a correctly configured audio source does not guarantee that the video signal is present.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

Clear the rights

Previously published podcast episodes are not automatically cleared for a new live rebroadcast. Review rights for the full archive, including music beds and inserted clips. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; a match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or lead to termination. If you have a licence for matched material, check whether the rights holder must add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance before going live.

Set up OBS Studio and connect it to YouTube Live

  1. Create a scene. In OBS Studio, create a scene for the broadcast. Add the still image as an image source and position or scale it to fill the canvas as desired.
  2. Add the MP3 playback. Add or route the audio playback source for the archive. Configure its playlist, ordering, and repeat behavior in the way supported by your OBS version or playback method. Verify that one file ends and the next begins as intended.
  3. Set video and output options. Choose a supported video codec and a resolution and bitrate that fit the current YouTube bitrate guidance and your available upload connection. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and set the keyframe interval to two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s current table for the recommended bitrate at your selected resolution rather than applying a single bitrate to every stream.
  4. Set audio options. For stereo, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and recommends 128 Kbps. Confirm that the source is audible and that the encoder is not accidentally sending silence or the wrong input.
  5. Choose secure ingest. In OBS’s stream settings, choose YouTube – RTMPS and select or enter the stream key for the intended broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. Its developer documentation specifies a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and port 443 for RTMPS: YouTube RTMPS ingestion guidance.
  6. Protect the stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send a stream to your channel.

OBS’s YouTube guide covers selecting YouTube – RTMPS, using a stream key, configuring output and video options, and checking stream status. Interface labels can change between OBS versions; use the guide as a route through the current setup, not as a guarantee that every screen looks identical: OBS: Streaming to YouTube.

Test before making the broadcast public

  1. Start the encoder with a private or unlisted test if that fits your channel workflow.
  2. Check that the YouTube preview shows the still image and that the audio is present and at a sensible level.
  3. Let the archive run through transitions between files. Confirm the sequence and repeat behavior, if any, rather than checking only the first track.
  4. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health indicators. A successful connection from OBS does not, by itself, prove that the broadcast is live to viewers.
  5. When ready, make the scheduled broadcast live using the controls appropriate to your stream’s configuration. Auto-start and scheduled-stream behavior can affect this transition.

YouTube recommends testing before starting and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. For a still-image program, verify the still and representative audio in the preview. If the broadcast is meant to run for a long time, keep the computer, encoder, and network connection available throughout.

Monitor and end the stream

Watch YouTube’s stream health while the archive plays, and periodically confirm that the image remains visible and the audio continues advancing. If the encoder disconnects or the stream is interrupted, check both the encoder and Live Control Room before assuming viewers still have a live feed. When the archive is finished, stop the stream in OBS and confirm in YouTube Live Control Room that the broadcast has ended.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube preview has no image The encoder is not sending video, or the image source is missing or not visible in the active scene. Confirm the correct OBS scene is active, the image source is visible, and a supported video encoder is configured.
Image appears but there is no sound The MP3 playback is not routed to the stream, the wrong audio source is selected, or the source is muted. Check OBS audio meters and source routing, then listen to a test in the YouTube preview.
The first MP3 plays, but the next one does not The chosen playback method may not advance through files automatically. Check the playlist or playback controls for your specific software version and test the complete sequence before going live.
The archive stops at the end Repeat behavior may be disabled or may apply only to an individual file. Verify whether the full playlist repeats and test what happens at the end of the final file.
OBS connects, but the public broadcast is not live The stream may still need to be started in Live Control Room, depending on schedule and auto-start settings. Check the broadcast state and stream status in YouTube Live Control Room.
Stream health reports a problem The upload connection, bitrate, encoder settings, or ingest connection may not be suitable. Use CBR, the recommended two-second keyframe interval, a resolution-specific bitrate from YouTube’s current guidance, and RTMPS. Recheck the network and the selected stream key.
Stream is replaced, interrupted, or terminated YouTube may have detected third-party content in the live audio. Review the archive’s rights and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting if the material is licensed.

  • Nothing has to stay powered on at home, and your home connection does not have to carry the ongoing stream.
  • One flat price per slot covers the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.

DIY costs and practical limits

The OBS route uses your own computer, media files, and internet connection; the cited setup does not require a dedicated hardware encoder or capture card. Its practical trade-off is that the computer and connection must remain available for the broadcast, and you are responsible for verifying playlist behavior and recovery if something disconnects. YouTube’s encoder documentation provides technical settings, not a guarantee of audience reach or uninterrupted operation.
