Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →FFmpeg’s “Invalid data found when processing input” message means it encountered data it could not process; it does not, by itself, identify the cause. In a YouTube playlist workflow, first determine whether yt-dlp failed while downloading a video or whether the download completed and FFmpeg failed later during a merge or other post-processing. The right fix depends on the failing stage, the named input file, the media format and your FFmpeg version.
Find out where the error occurs
Start by rerunning the affected playlist item with yt-dlp’s verbose logging enabled. Keep the complete output so you can see the sequence of events—not just the final error. For example, use yt-dlp -v "VIDEO_OR_PLAYLIST_URL", replacing the placeholder with the URL you are troubleshooting.
- If yt-dlp reports a retrieval or download error before the media finishes, investigate that download stage.
- If audio and video downloads reach 100% and yt-dlp then invokes FFmpeg, the failure is in post-processing. Note the merge command and the exact input filename named in FFmpeg’s error.
- Record the installed FFmpeg version and the affected item’s format or delivery path, if the log shows it.
A yt-dlp issue report documents the second pattern: audio and video downloads completed, then FFmpeg failed during a merge on the audio input. That example is a reason to inspect the named file and merge stage; it does not mean every playlist error has the same cause. See yt-dlp issue reports.
Check whether your case matches a known FFmpeg issue
The yt-dlp known-issues index describes separate FFmpeg-related cases with different affected formats and version advice. Match the details in your log before changing FFmpeg; these historical notes are not universal fixes for every playlist error.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. - Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Reported context | Version note in yt-dlp’s known-issues index | How to use the note |
|---|---|---|
Live, post-live or DASH content involving duplicate ftyp data |
The issue was associated with FFmpeg 6.1; the index listed an upgrade to 6.1.1 or a specified newer master build. | Compare your input type and installed version with the current issue entry before applying this version advice. |
| HDR VP9 in an MP4/HLS context | The index described an FFmpeg bug and listed FFmpeg 7.0.1 or latest master. | Use this note only if your format and processing path match the reported case; it is not a general playlist remedy. |
Those recommendations reflect particular reported scenarios and may not describe current fixes for every configuration. Check the current yt-dlp known-issues index and compare its details with your log. Reports involving distinct live/post-live/DASH and HDR VP9/HLS circumstances reinforce why format and processing path matter. Review the relevant yt-dlp issue reports.
Inspect the exact file FFmpeg names
If the error identifies a local downloaded input, check that specific file before trying to repair or convert it. Use ffprobe "filename" to inspect whether FFmpeg can recognize its container and streams; substitute the actual path shown in your log. Compare the detected file type with its extension and consider whether the download appears incomplete.

An extension alone does not establish what container or streams a file contains. General FFmpeg troubleshooting guidance recommends identifying the actual file type before attempting repair. It does not establish that a particular YouTube download is damaged or that an incomplete file can be recovered. Read general FFmpeg invalid-data troubleshooting guidance.
Isolate the failing playlist item
Test the item named in the log separately, then compare its format and post-processing path with an item that succeeds. In a playlist, one entry may use a different delivery or media format from its neighbors, so a failure on one item does not establish that the playlist itself is broken.

The reported cases cover more than one YouTube format and processing context. They do not establish a universal format selector, playlist flag or skip option that fixes every occurrence. Avoid adding a command-line switch unless your log and the current project guidance support it.
Choose a fix that fits the evidence
- For a documented version regression: If your log matches a known issue’s input context and affected FFmpeg version, follow the current version guidance for that specific case. Retest the affected item after updating.
- For a post-processing failure: If downloads completed before FFmpeg failed, focus on the exact input named in the merge invocation and the merge stage—not on a presumed playlist download failure.
- For a suspect local file: Inspect its actual container and streams with
ffprobeand check whether it appears incomplete before trying repair, remuxing or re-encoding. Re-encoding is not a substitute for diagnosing an incomplete input. - For any other pattern: Preserve the full verbose log and consult current yt-dlp project guidance. Do not assume a workaround from an older, different report applies.
Troubleshoot common patterns
- The download reaches 100%, then FFmpeg errors: Check the post-processing command and the specific input file named in the error. Download completion alone does not prove that every file is valid for the subsequent merge.
- The error appears on live, post-live or DASH media: Compare the format and installed FFmpeg version with the duplicate-
ftypcase in yt-dlp’s current known-issues index before choosing a version change. - The item is HDR VP9 or uses an HLS path: Check whether the reported HDR VP9/MP4 issue actually matches your input and version. Do not apply its version note to unrelated formats.
- Only one playlist entry fails: Isolate that item and compare its format and processing path with successful entries; do not treat a single item’s failure as proof of a playlist-wide defect.
- The log does not resemble a documented case: Keep the complete verbose output, including the FFmpeg command and filename. The error label alone is not enough to select a reliable workaround.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded video or playlist live on YouTube 24/7 rather than troubleshoot a local yt-dlp download, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it is not a fix for FFmpeg or yt-dlp errors.
