The essentials are a verified, eligible YouTube channel; a recording you have rights to stream; an encoder and internet connection that hold up under the real workload; and a plan to spot and recover from failures. A spare computer is a useful starting point, not a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and rights
Confirm you can go live
YouTube requires the channel to be verified and free of live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The person streaming must be at least 16 years old. Check eligibility before preparing a long-running broadcast: a restriction or unmet requirement can prevent you from starting. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Use a recording cleared for continuous streaming
The lowest-risk choice is a waterfall recording you made yourself. Otherwise, get written permission or a license that explicitly covers continuous live streaming, the relevant territory, monetization if intended, and archived replay. A sound recording can have rights separate from the natural sound it captures; finding a file online or crediting its maker does not by itself grant permission.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may warn, interrupt, or terminate a stream if it detects a match. Some licensed content may also need the rights holder to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist. Confirm the permissions and any allowlisting before going live, and make sure the license also covers the saved replay. India’s Copyright Rules contain a statutory licensing procedure for specified broadcasts of published literary or musical works and sound recordings, with notice and royalty requirements. That is a narrow procedure, not blanket permission to rebroadcast any recording, and it does not determine whether it applies to a particular YouTube ambience channel. Prepare the waterfall loop in OBS
Choose your picture and sound sources
Use a still image or moving waterfall visual alongside the ambience audio. A single combined video file is simplest if its picture and sound are already mixed. If you want to use separate sources, add them to the OBS scene and check that the audio is audible and the visual is framed as intended.

For one local file, add a Media Source in OBS and enable Loop. For a playlist, add a VLC Video source, install VLC, select the playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS documents both approaches in its Media Sources guide.
Check the loop before broadcasting
- Preview the whole scene and confirm the waterfall image is visible at the intended size.
- Listen through a transition or loop point for gaps, clicks, sudden loudness changes, or silence.
- Confirm the selected audio source is reaching the OBS mixer; an image that plays correctly does not prove the stream has sound.
- Leave the scene running long enough to check the loop behavior before connecting it to a public livestream.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a livestream using an encoder. Set the stream details and audience settings for your channel.
- Open the stream settings in YouTube Studio and connect OBS using the stream key and server information YouTube provides. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with viewers.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the connection details. Use RTMPS where supported; YouTube describes it as a secure version of RTMP.
- Start streaming from OBS, then return to YouTube Studio to confirm the incoming feed and check for warnings before starting or leaving the broadcast unattended.
Labels can vary slightly with OBS and YouTube Studio updates. Follow the current stream settings shown in your own YouTube Studio rather than reusing a stream key from an old broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose settings the spare PC and connection can sustain
Do not choose a target resolution just because the PC can display it. The encoder must process the scene and the internet connection must sustain the outgoing bitrate. YouTube’s current encoder table recommends the following H.264 video bitrates; these are platform recommendations, not a measurement or guarantee of your PC or ISP performance.

YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Start with a quality your sustained upload connection can handle, then test with the actual waterfall scene and audio. If stream health reports instability, reduce the bitrate or output target and test again. The listed bitrates do not include a promise that a particular upload link can deliver them reliably.

Test the full setup before leaving it live
- Run OBS with the final visual, audio, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate—not a lighter placeholder scene.
- Check sustained upload performance while the PC is encoding. A momentary speed-test result alone does not show how the connection behaves over a long broadcast.
- Start an unlisted or otherwise controlled test stream if appropriate, and check YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages.
- Watch and listen on another device. Confirm the picture updates, the sound is present, and YouTube receives the stream as expected.
- Test a representative loop transition and leave the setup running long enough to notice dropped frames, encoder strain, audio problems, or network instability.

Set the computer not to sleep while OBS is streaming, keep it connected to power, and prevent routine updates or restarts from interrupting the broadcast where your operating system allows. Check that OBS remains open and that the loop continues to play.

Decide how someone will notice a frozen image, silent audio, an OBS crash, a lost network connection, or a power outage. A spare PC does not make these failures self-repairing. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health; checking the broadcast periodically and having a person able to restart or troubleshoot it are practical parts of an unattended-stream plan.
A UPS sized for the actual PC-and-router load may bridge a brief power interruption. Runtime depends on the equipment and load, and a UPS cannot keep an internet connection available if the network itself fails. It is not a guarantee of 24/7 uptime.
Common problems and fixes
