OBS shows dropped frames on a 24/7 fireplace stream when the connection from your computer to the streaming platform’s ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the bitrate you set. The counter does not, by itself, mean the fireplace video or OBS installation is faulty. It also does not identify which part of the network path is failing.
What dropped frames mean in OBS
OBS describes dropped frames as a connection issue: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” In this context, the remote server is the streaming platform’s ingest endpoint, not an OBS-operated server. OBS explains: “There are no OBS servers – the connection goes directly from your computer to the streaming service.” (OBS stream connection troubleshooting; OBS Help Portal FAQ.)
OBS discards frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. That points to a connection that cannot deliver the configured stream reliably; it does not prove whether the cause is your Wi-Fi, local network equipment, internet provider, route to the platform, ingest server choice, or bitrate. A 24/7 broadcast depends on sustained stability over time, but OBS’s published guidance does not identify a special fireplace-stream cause or quantify a 24/7 failure rate.
First identify which problem you have
Dropped-frames counter or connection indicator
If the dropped-frames counter is rising or OBS’s connection indicator is yellow or red, start with the connection checks below. Note when the counter rises and whether the stream disconnects; the timing can help distinguish a continuous capacity problem from an intermittent one.

Choppy output or “encoding overloaded”
Rendering and encoding overload are different from network dropped frames. OBS’s performance guidance points to GPU or system workload, including scene composition and rendering. If you see “encoding overloaded” or the output is choppy without a rising network-drop count, investigate that branch separately: simplify scenes or sources, reduce output resolution or frame rate, and check whether another task is competing for GPU resources. OBS notes that moving from 60 fps to 30 fps can reduce workload when 60 fps is not working for the system. These performance recommendations come from OBS’s guide published 2021-06-12; labels and available controls may differ by installed OBS version. (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.)
Viewers report buffering
Viewer buffering is not the same symptom as OBS dropping frames. A viewer’s device and internet connection, as well as the platform’s transcoding options, can affect playback. Buffering reports alone do not establish that OBS is dropping frames, and a rising OBS drop counter does not prove every viewer is buffering. (OBS buffering troubleshooting.)

Troubleshoot connection drops in this order
- Confirm and record the symptom. In OBS, watch whether the dropped-frames counter increases and note the connection indicator, timestamps, and any disconnections. Keep the log for escalation. If the actual warning is an encoding overload or the output is choppy, use the performance branch above rather than assuming a network fault.
- Check bitrate against sustainable upload capacity. OBS recommends lowering video bitrate to fit stable upload speed and the streaming platform’s limits. Its guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a good starting point—not a guarantee. A speed-test result is not necessarily the upload capacity your connection can sustain continuously, and platform limits vary. Reduce bitrate cautiously, then observe whether the counter stops rising and whether the resulting picture quality remains acceptable.
- Test the route and ingest server. Try another ingest server in your streaming setup. If useful, briefly test another streaming service to see whether the issue appears specific to one service; that comparison will not repair a problem isolated to the original service. OBS says Windows users streaming to Twitch can use TwitchTest to compare server quality. Which server or bitrate is appropriate depends on the platform, geography, route, and current conditions.
- If you use Wi-Fi, try Ethernet. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. Treat this as a diagnostic test as well as a possible long-term change. A cable can help isolate a wireless or local-link issue, but it cannot fix congestion at your ISP or a poor route farther upstream.
- Check local software and hardware. OBS lists firewall or antivirus interference, VPNs, network-prioritization utilities, and outdated network drivers as possible contributors. Modems, routers, faulty cables, network cards, switches, and extenders can also be involved. Where practical, change one thing at a time. If you temporarily disable security software to test, restore it afterward and add an OBS exception if the test indicates interference.
- Test OBS network options cautiously. OBS lists Network Optimizations and TCP pacing on Windows as settings some users report helping; it advises leaving Bind to IP at Default. You can test IPv4 Only, but revert to the default IPv4/IPv6 setting if it makes no difference. Dynamic bitrate adjustment (Beta in OBS’s guide) lowers bitrate during congestion; it may reduce drops, but it does not repair the underlying connection and can reduce quality.
- Escalate with evidence. If the connection still drops after these checks, contact your ISP with the OBS logs, timestamps, bitrate, and a description of when the drops occur. Congestion or route-side changes may be outside your control.
These steps follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide, published 2024-09-30. The guide does not provide a single bitrate or server choice that applies to every service, region, and connection.
Why a 24/7 schedule does not identify the cause
A long-running broadcast makes sustained connection stability important, but the duration alone does not tell you why frames are being dropped. The official OBS guidance reviewed does not give a unique cause, frequency estimate, or failure rate for 24/7 fireplace streams. Diagnose the indicators and the actual network path rather than attributing the issue to fireplace footage or to the schedule itself.
