To record a microphone, game, voice chat, or music on separate tracks in OBS, assign each source to its own track in Advanced Audio Properties, then enable those tracks under Settings → Output. If you also want a file that plays as a normal mix in ordinary video players, send a complete mix to track 1 as well. For audio from an app OBS cannot capture directly, use a virtual audio device as a fallback.
Choose the capture method that fits your setup
Selective recording has two parts: getting each sound into OBS as a distinct source, and deciding which recording track receives each source. The right capture route depends on your operating system, OBS version, and whether the app’s audio is available directly.
| Method | Best fit | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS sources plus track assignment | Audio already available as separate OBS sources | Assign sources to tracks and enable those tracks separately in output settings. OBS Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide |
| Application Audio Capture on Windows | Capturing supported individual apps on Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11 | Disable global Desktop Audio to avoid echo; some applications may need virtual routing. OBS Application Audio Capture Guide |
| Virtual audio cable | An app that does not work with direct application capture | It adds a virtual device and routing steps; OBS documents VB-CABLE for Windows. OBS Application Audio Capture Guide |
| Native macOS audio capture | OBS Studio 30 on macOS 13 Ventura or later, as described in OBS’s guide | Check your OBS and macOS versions; other setups may require a different method. OBS macOS Desktop Audio Capture Guide |
| External mixer software such as Wave Link | Users already routing audio through that ecosystem | Capture its virtual outputs in OBS and assign them to recording tracks; this is a vendor-specific workflow, not a requirement for basic separation. Elgato Wave Link multi-track guide |
Set up separate recording tracks in OBS
- Decide what needs independent control. List the sources you want to edit separately—for example, microphone, game, voice chat, and music. Decide whether you also need a combined mix.
- Add or capture each source separately. Use the appropriate OBS source for each available audio device or application. On supported Windows versions, Application Audio Capture can capture an individual app. If you use per-app sources, OBS advises disabling the global Desktop Audio source to prevent duplicate or echoing sound. The exact source choices depend on your platform and OBS setup. OBS Application Audio Capture Guide
- Assign sources to tracks. In the Audio Mixer, open Advanced Audio Properties. For each source, check the track or tracks it should feed. A common editing layout is a full mix on track 1 plus individual microphone, game, and voice-chat tracks, but choose the assignments that suit your edit. OBS Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide
- Enable the recording tracks. Go to Settings → Output and enable the tracks you intend to record. Assigning a source to a track and enabling that track for recording are separate steps. OBS Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide
- Make a short test recording. Speak, play the game, and activate the other relevant sources. Check the recording in the editor or player you plan to use: verify the individual tracks and, if configured, the combined mix. OBS’s guide explains that standard players generally play one audio track at a time, so the editor or player matters when checking a multi-track file. OBS Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide
Choose between an editable recording and a ready-to-play mix
For editing separate sources
Give each source its own track and enable each of those tracks in Settings → Output. If useful, add a combined mix on another track so you can quickly hear the intended balance while retaining independent sources for editing. Confirm the result in your intended editor before relying on the layout.
For a file that should play normally outside an editor
Include a full mix on track 1. OBS notes that “all standard video players will only play back one audio track at a time,” and recommends sending all sources to track 1 when the recording will not be processed in an editor before publication. A file with isolated tracks but no combined mix may sound incomplete in a player that selects only one track. OBS Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide

Capture an app that OBS does not pick up
Windows: route the application through VB-CABLE
OBS’s Windows guide documents a virtual-cable fallback for applications that are incompatible with direct Application Audio Capture:
- Install and configure the virtual cable according to its provider’s instructions.
- In the Windows Volume Mixer, route the target application’s output to CABLE Input.
- In OBS, add an audio input source and select CABLE Output as its device.
- Assign that OBS source to the recording track you want, then make a test recording to confirm the app is isolated as intended.
Device labels are easy to reverse: the application is routed to CABLE Input, while OBS captures CABLE Output. Follow the names shown in the device lists. OBS Application Audio Capture Guide

macOS: verify version-specific capture options
OBS’s macOS guide says OBS Studio 30 on macOS 13 Ventura and higher can use the macOS Audio Capture Source. The guide also describes virtual-device routing and names Loopback and Sound Siphon for per-application routing. Check the guide against your installed versions before choosing a route; its native-capture statement is specific to the versions it names. OBS macOS Desktop Audio Capture Guide
Troubleshoot missing, duplicated, or misplaced audio
- A source is silent in the recording: Check that the source appears in OBS, is receiving audio, is assigned to a track in Advanced Audio Properties, and that the same track is enabled under Settings → Output.
- Desktop audio is doubled or echoes: If using Windows Application Audio Capture sources, disable the global Desktop Audio source as OBS recommends. OBS Application Audio Capture Guide
- An application is absent from direct capture: Some applications’ output is incompatible with direct Application Audio Capture. Use a virtual-device route, such as the documented VB-CABLE workflow on Windows. OBS Application Audio Capture Guide
- A media player only plays one source: Standard players select one audio track at a time rather than combining every isolated track. Include a complete mix on track 1 if the file needs to play as a finished mix outside an editor. OBS Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide
- The documented macOS capture option is missing: Check whether your OBS and macOS versions match the versions in OBS’s guide—OBS Studio 30 and macOS 13 Ventura or newer for the native capture option it describes. OBS macOS Desktop Audio Capture Guide
- Wave Link outputs are not separated: The Elgato workflow requires capturing its virtual outputs in OBS and assigning them to tracks; routing through Wave Link alone does not replace OBS track configuration. Elgato Wave Link multi-track guide
Or let it run in the cloud
Selective recording in OBS is for making a local recording with separately controllable audio. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos running as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and is for YouTube.
