How to Stop Audio Clipping in a 24/7 Thunder and Rain YouTube Stream

Find the first overloaded stage in your thunder-and-rain audio chain, then use an OBS limiter to catch remaining peaks and verify the result in a test recording.

To stop thunder from clipping, find and lower the first overloaded point in the audio chain, then put an OBS limiter last in that source’s filter chain to catch peaks that remain. A limiter cannot repair distortion already introduced upstream. Check the loudest thunder passage in OBS and in a test recording before leaving the stream unattended.

What clipping is—and why a limiter is not enough

In digital audio, 0 dBFS is the maximum representable full-scale level. If the signal delivered to the stream or recording exceeds it, the result can be clipping distortion. OBS can process audio above 0 dBFS internally using floating-point audio, but that does not make an over-level output safe. OBS’s audio mixer documentation describes its meter and peak behavior.

The key is to distinguish an already-distorted signal from a clean signal that becomes too loud later. Turning down an OBS fader after an interface or other earlier stage has clipped does not restore the missing waveform. Diagnose from the source toward the output, lowering the earliest stage where overload occurs.

Trace the thunder through the signal chain

  1. Identify the source. In OBS, find the mixer channel carrying the thunder-and-rain loop. Watch its meter through the loudest thunder passage, not just a quiet stretch. OBS’s peak-hold marker retains the highest level for 20 seconds, making brief transients easier to spot. OBS documents -9 dBFS as the permitted maximum reference for its sample peak meter; treat that as a meter reference with margin for meter and alignment uncertainty, not as an average-loudness target.
  2. Listen before OBS, if possible. Monitor the source or device output directly. If the thunder is already distorted there, OBS filters cannot undo it. Reduce the source playback level or the relevant device, interface, mixer, operating-system, or application gain, then listen again.
  3. Check the signal arriving in OBS. If the source sounds clean before OBS but the OBS meter shows excessive peaks or the monitored sound distorts, reduce gain at the earliest stage in that remaining path that is too hot. Check the actual routing and levels rather than compensating only with a later output fader. OBS’s audio monitoring guidance recommends listening at the source and again through OBS.
  4. Test the loudest material. Use the most forceful thunder transient in the loop. If the file has several different storms or the loop changes over time, check each unusually loud passage.

Set up OBS filters to catch remaining peaks

Limiter: last in the chain

Add a Limiter filter to the thunder-and-rain source and place it after the other filters. OBS says the limiter prevents peaks above 0 dB and should be the final filter in the chain: OBS Project’s Limiter Filter documentation. Its documented defaults are a -6 dB threshold and 60 ms release. These are starting points for evaluation, not guaranteed ideal settings for every recording. Listen to the loudest storm passage and adjust if the limiter makes thunder sound flattened or unnatural.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Compressor: optional control for broader dynamics

A compressor reduces signal above its threshold and can smooth broader loudness swings, but it is not required just to catch brief peaks. OBS generally places it near the beginning of the filter chain. The documented compressor defaults are a 6 ms attack, 60 ms release, and -18 dB threshold; they are filter defaults, not universal storm-audio settings. Use moderate settings and compare with the compressor bypassed: aggressive compression can reduce the contrast and impact of thunder. See OBS Project’s Compressor Filter documentation.

Expander: not a clipping remedy

An expander can attenuate low-level unwanted computer noise, but it will not stop loud thunder from clipping. OBS places it after compression and other effects but before the limiter. Set its threshold cautiously: too high a threshold can turn down the quieter rain you want to hear. See OBS Project’s Expander Filter documentation.

Choose the right control for the problem

Control Best use Placement or limitation
Source or device gain Prevent overload where it begins Adjust early; lowering a later stage cannot repair an already-clipped input.
Compressor Reduce broader dynamic swings above a threshold Usually near the beginning; excessive action can flatten thunder.
Limiter Catch brief peaks that remain Last in the filter chain; cannot undo upstream clipping.
Expander Reduce low-level unwanted noise After compression and effects, before the limiter; a mis-set threshold can suppress wanted rain.

Record and listen before leaving the stream unattended

  1. Make a representative OBS recording that includes the loudest thunder passage.
  2. Listen back to the recording, rather than relying on the meter alone. Check that thunder is not harsh or flattened and that quieter rain remains audible.
  3. Make any gain or filter changes, then record and listen again. Repeat this check when you replace the loop, change routing, or alter gains or filters.

Headphones can help you monitor the source and OBS output, but they are only a diagnostic aid; they do not prevent clipping. The recording check matters because monitoring and meter readings do not substitute for hearing the delivered audio.

Common clipping problems and fixes

  • Distortion remains after lowering an OBS fader: clipping may be occurring earlier in the chain. Listen at the source or device output and lower gain at the first overloaded stage.
  • The meter looks acceptable, but a recording sounds distorted: inspect the loudest transient and listen to the recorded output. A meter reference is not a substitute for an audition of the delivered audio.
  • The limiter catches peaks, but thunder sounds flattened: review its action with the actual loud passage and adjust the threshold or other processing. Avoid using aggressive compression to solve a peak-only problem.
  • Rain becomes too quiet after adding an expander: its threshold may be attenuating wanted quiet material. Lower or bypass the expander and listen through a full range of rain and thunder.
  • A replacement loop clips even though the previous one did not: source levels can differ. Recheck the new file’s loudest thunder passage and make a fresh recording before relying on the stream.
