Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024) is a historical fiction film with a large ensemble cast, not a true-story account. Kevin Costner plays Hayes, also listed as Hayes Ellison; Sienna Miller plays Frances, also listed as Frances Kittredge. The guide below identifies the principal actors and characters and groups them by the film’s settlement, military, mining-town and Apache-community storylines. Some sources spell names differently or give shorter role credits, so those variations are noted.
Who is in the cast of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1?
The 2024 film is directed by Kevin Costner. The Festival de Cannes credits and Venice Biennale program confirm principal cast members, while Netflix Tudum provides a broader actor-and-character roster. This is a principal-cast guide, not a claim to list every performer in the ensemble.
| Actor | Character | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Kevin Costner | Hayes / Hayes Ellison | Cannes credits him as Hayes; Netflix Tudum and the production notes use Hayes Ellison. He is a withdrawn loner with survival skills who hopes to leave a dangerous past behind. |
| Sienna Miller | Frances / Frances Kittredge | Cannes lists Frances; the production notes and Netflix use Frances Kittredge. She is a hardy pioneer who comes to Horizon with her husband seeking a better life. |
| Sam Worthington | First Lt. Trent Gephardt / Trent Gephart | The Cannes credits and production notes spell the surname Gephardt; Netflix Tudum uses Gephart. He is an idealistic, frustrated officer stationed at Fort Gallant. |
| Jena Malone | Ellen / Ellen Harvey | The production notes place Ellen in Watts Parish and also use the form Ellen/Lucy; Netflix calls her Ellen Harvey. She is determined to build a life there with Walt. |
| Abbey Lee | Marigold | A survivor in Watts Parish who boards with Ellen and Walt, helps with their home and child, and later goes on the run with Hayes after witnessing a murder. |
| Isabelle Fuhrman | Diamond | Listed in the Cannes credits; the consulted production-notes excerpt does not provide a character biography. |
| Owen Crow Shoe | Pionsenay | An Apache warrior with the White Mountain Apache tribe who is driven toward violence by what he witnesses between his community and settlers. |
| Tatanka Means | Taklishim | An Apache warrior and family man torn between his father’s preference to wait out settler arrivals and his brother Pionsenay’s resistance. |
| Wasé Winyan Chief | Liluye | Taklishim’s wife and the mother of their infant. Cannes renders the actor’s name as Wase Chief. |
| Danny Huston | Colonel Albert Houghton / Col. Houghton | A military commander who recognizes that settlers will keep arriving despite the hardships. |
| Michael Rooker | Sergeant Major Thomas Riordan / Sgt. Major Riordan | A career soldier at Camp/Fort Gallant who helps lead recruits toward Horizon after the attack. |
| Michael Angarano | Walter Childs | Ellen’s husband, called Walt in the production notes; he is well-intentioned and, in Ellen’s experience, unusually decent. |
| Jamie Campbell Bower | Caleb Sykes | The older Sykes brother, described in the production notes as brutal, vicious and dangerous. |
| Jon Beavers | Junior Sykes | Caleb’s brother, drawn into the family’s outlaw business. |
| Luke Wilson | Matthew Van Weyden | A pioneer who becomes the de facto leader of a wagon train despite not seeking the role. |

How are the characters connected?
The settlement and the Kittredges
Frances Kittredge arrives at the settlement with her husband and children. Their story belongs to the settler community facing the attack on Horizon, and Frances is among the survivors described by Netflix Tudum.
Fort Gallant’s military group
First Lt. Trent Gephardt, Colonel Houghton and Sergeant Major Riordan represent different military perspectives. Gephardt is idealistic and conflicted, Houghton empathetic but pragmatic, and Riordan a military lifer who helps direct aid toward Horizon.

Ellen and Walter (Walt) Childs make a home in the mining town with their infant. Marigold boards with them and helps around the household. After witnessing a murder, she flees with Hayes; Netflix also describes Ellen escaping a violent past while the Sykes brothers pursue her.
The Sykes brothers
Caleb and Junior are outlaw brothers. Caleb is the older, more violent figure; Junior follows the family business, though the production notes describe him as reluctant.

Taklishim’s family and Apache community
Taklishim and Pionsenay are brothers, while Liluye is Taklishim’s wife. They do not share one response to settler encroachment: Taklishim’s father favors waiting, while Pionsenay pushes toward resistance. Liluye is loyal to Taklishim but questions his choices and the conflict with his brother.
What is the film’s setting and historical context?
The Venice Biennale describes a river settlement in nineteenth-century New Mexico Territory and presents the story through the perspectives of settlers, soldiers, Indigenous Americans and Chinese migrant workers. The Cannes press kit frames the saga around western expansion and settlement before and after the Civil War. Netflix Tudum says the story begins in 1859, when surveyors mark a proposed settlement site, and explicitly identifies the film as fiction—not a story based on a book or a true account.

Festival credits, production notes and streaming-service cast pages do not always use identical forms. Cannes may shorten a role name while Netflix gives a fuller version; Trent’s surname appears as both Gephardt and Gephart. When a spelling matters, the table identifies the source variation rather than implying that every published roster agrees.
