To preserve quality, loop the original file in OBS, match the stream output to the resolution and frame rate the file can genuinely provide, and use YouTube’s live-encoding settings for the codec you choose. Keep the encoder’s bitrate within YouTube’s recommendation and your sustained upload capacity; looping does not itself improve or reduce the source file’s detail.

What affects quality in a looped YouTube stream?

The result depends on four things: the source file’s picture and sound, how the encoder scales and compresses it, the stability of the upload connection, and YouTube’s processing of the incoming stream. YouTube transcodes streams into playback formats for viewers, but that cannot restore detail missing from the source or undo poor scaling.

  • Source: Choose output resolution and frame rate the file can actually supply. Enlarging a low-resolution file does not create genuine detail.
  • Encoder: Select a live bitrate for the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate—not the source file’s upload bitrate.
  • Connection: The upload must sustain the complete outgoing stream bitrate, with headroom, throughout the broadcast.
  • Playback: Check the Live Control Room preview and the stream on another device; a good local preview alone does not verify the viewer’s result.

YouTube’s live recommendations are distinct from its prerecorded-upload recommendations. For example, its H.264 upload guidance lists 8 Mbps for 1080p standard frame rate and 12 Mbps for 1080p high frame rate; its live guidance recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Do not use an upload export number as a substitute for the live encoder setting. See YouTube’s upload encoding settings and live encoder settings.

How to loop a file in OBS

  1. Check the source. Play the file from start to finish, confirm its framing and audio, and make sure you have the rights to use both its video and sound in a YouTube livestream.
  2. Add it as a source. In OBS, use the Sources panel’s add button and choose Media Source. Create a source, select the local video file, and enable Loop in its properties. OBS describes this control as specifying whether the file plays again after playback completes. The setting repeats the file, but OBS does not guarantee a seamless picture or sound transition at the boundary. See OBS Media Sources.
  3. For a playlist, use VLC Video. Add a VLC Video source, add the media files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed. Check the order, framing, and audio in OBS before streaming.
  4. Set up YouTube ingest. Create or select a YouTube Live stream, then enter its server URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming settings. The key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it; treat it like a password and do not share it. See YouTube’s live stream settings.
  5. Match output to the material. Set OBS output resolution and frame rate to a level the source can genuinely support. Avoid upscaling just to select a larger output. For SDR, YouTube specifies progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709; check its current live settings for compatibility with your selected codec and protocol.
  6. Configure the encoder. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s live chart for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. Its general guidance says resolution and frame rate are detected automatically by default; manual selection is available with a custom stream key. Confirm the available options in your encoder.
  7. Test before going live unattended. Run a test with movement and sound similar to the planned stream. Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then watch the channel’s stream on a separate device, including a phone. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate before streaming; see its streaming tips.

Which bitrate should you use?

Use the live bitrate guidance for the outgoing codec and output—not a bitrate copied from the original file. The examples below are YouTube Help recommendations for H.264 live encoding; they are not guarantees of perceived quality. Other supported codecs have different recommendations.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
H.264 live output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These figures come from YouTube’s live encoder settings; the page does not show a publication date. Consult it for the exact codec and output combination rather than extrapolating between rows. Raising bitrate beyond a sensible recommendation cannot compensate for a weak source or an unstable connection.

Check upload capacity and stream health

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and says the total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth. The stream’s total outgoing bitrate includes video and audio, so do not plan against a speed-test result with no margin. A speed test is only a snapshot; stability matters over the whole broadcast. If the local network link is unreliable, test over Ethernet or improve the connection before relying on a long stream. A cable can help the local link, but it cannot increase the internet service’s available bandwidth.

During the test, check YouTube’s preview and health indicators, listen for audio problems, and watch for dropped or interrupted video. If viewers report buffering, consider whether the selected latency is too low for their network conditions: YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. DVR allows viewers to pause, rewind, and resume a live stream; it does not increase image fidelity.

Common quality problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Soft or blocky picture Low-quality source, excessive scaling, or an encoder bitrate unsuitable for the output Use an output the source supports, avoid unnecessary upscaling, and compare the encoder bitrate with YouTube’s live recommendation for that codec and resolution.
Buffering or stream-health warnings Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable Test sustained upload, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and check the local connection; consider a wired connection if Wi-Fi is unreliable.
OBS preview looks right but viewers see a problem The preview does not show every downstream issue Inspect Live Control Room stream health and watch the actual channel stream on a second device and network.
Visible or audible jump when the video repeats The file’s beginning and ending do not join smoothly Review the boundary in the source and adjust or edit the file if needed. Enabling Loop repeats playback; it does not guarantee a seamless transition.
Stream stops after a network interruption The encoder lost its connection to YouTube Check upload stability and encoder/YouTube status. A local OBS setup depends on the computer and network remaining available.

Rights and channel considerations

Before looping a file, confirm that you have permission to livestream its video and audio. Repeating a recording does not change the underlying rights. YouTube’s encoder settings establish technical guidance, not permission to use a particular work or a guarantee of monetization. Keep the stream’s title and presentation accurate, and review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content before scheduling a continuous broadcast.
