This keeps the playlist running only while the PC, files, power and internet connection remain available. YouTube also warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as a replay.
What you need before setting up OBS
- OBS Studio on Windows 11 and VLC media player. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS’s media-source documentation explains the source requirement.
- The local video files you want to play, stored where they will remain accessible to OBS.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, plus a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected stream settings.
If live streaming has not been enabled on your YouTube channel, YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide covers enabling the feature and connecting an encoder.
Build and test the looping playlist in OBS
- Create a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene for the broadcast. Choose the intended canvas and output dimensions in Settings > Video; for a straightforward 1080p stream, set the output resolution to 1920 Ă— 1080.
- Add the playlist source. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Give it a clear name. If it is missing, confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; OBS documents the 64-bit pairing requirement.
- Add the files in the desired order. In the source properties, use the playlist controls to add the local video files. Arrange them in the sequence you want viewers to see.
- Set repeat behavior. Enable Loop Playlist. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed order; turn it on only if you want the files played in a changing order. OBS documents loop as enabled and shuffle as disabled by default, but check the controls rather than relying on defaults.
- Preview the full sequence. Play the source locally in OBS and confirm that every file opens, audio is present at a suitable level, transitions between files work, and the final file returns to the start of the list. This is a setup check, not a guarantee against later file, computer or network failures.
The built-in OBS Media Source can loop one local file, but it is not the multi-file playlist control. Use VLC Video Source for a list of videos. OBS’s media-source guide describes the difference.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. Open YouTube Studio > Create > Go live and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. Keep the stream unlisted while checking the setup.
- Copy the connection details. In YouTube Studio’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube describes it as analogous to a password and address. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain stream keys.
- Enter them in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and select the RTMPS server option if available. If OBS presents a direct stream-key connection, enter the YouTube stream key; if it presents separate server and key fields, copy the stream URL into the server field and the key into the key field. Apply the settings without sharing or publishing the key.
- Start an unlisted test. In OBS, select Start Streaming. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the stream public. Confirm the video and audio are reaching YouTube and that the playlist continues through a file change.
Choose video and encoder settings your setup can sustain
YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its published H.264 video bitrate recommendations include the following values. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that a particular Windows PC or internet connection can sustain them. See YouTube’s current encoder settings before going live, since guidance can change.

In OBS, set the encoder output to H.264 and CBR, choose the resolution and frame rate you intend to deliver, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds. Use a bitrate your connection can maintain continuously, with room for normal network variation. If the YouTube preview reports unstable health, reduce the bitrate or output demands and test again rather than assuming a short successful preview proves a 24/7 connection will hold.
Keep the local stream running and plan for interruptions
OBS is encoding and sending the video from your computer. For a long-running broadcast, the PC must stay powered, awake, ventilated and connected; the media files must remain accessible, and the internet connection must remain usable. These are consequences of the local encoder setup, not an OBS or YouTube uptime guarantee.

- Adjust Windows power settings so the PC does not sleep during the broadcast. Keep it plugged into reliable power and provide adequate ventilation.
- Use a stable wired connection where practical, and avoid other activity that consumes most of the available upload capacity.
- Do not move or rename source files while OBS is using them. If a source breaks, restore the files at their original paths, then verify the playlist in the preview.
- Check OBS and YouTube’s stream-health indicators periodically. A dropped connection, Windows restart, power loss or unavailable file can interrupt the feed; the local setup cannot keep streaming while the PC is off.
Decide how you want to preserve a replay
A continuous broadcast and a complete YouTube replay are separate goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That warning concerns replay capture; it is not a stated 12-hour limit on sending an encoder feed. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup if the recording matters. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.
If a replay is important, enable local recording in OBS and make sure the recording destination has enough free space for the duration and quality you expect. Alternatively, plan shorter broadcast sessions and verify each archive. A local recording is still subject to the PC remaining powered and the storage being available.

Copyright, permission and documentary footage
Before streaming documentaries or clips, confirm that you have the rights or permission needed for the video, music, narration and any other included material. Uploading a video to a playlist does not grant streaming rights, and a live encoder connection does not remove YouTube’s copyright rules. Use material you own, have licensed for this use, or are otherwise entitled to broadcast; review YouTube’s applicable policies in Studio if a claim or restriction appears.
Common problems and fixes
