For a prerecorded programme streamed live on YouTube, configure the outgoing feed—not just the source file—with H.264 video, AAC audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose the video bitrate for the stream’s actual resolution and frame rate, use RTMPS when your encoder supports it, and test the whole chain before leaving it unattended.
Recommended live encoder settings
YouTube’s live-ingestion guidance, observed on 2026-10-03, recommends the settings below. The video bitrates are platform recommendations, not results of an independent test. Match the bitrate to the resolution and frame rate you are sending to YouTube.
- Video codec: H.264.
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio codec: AAC. For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz at 128 Kbps.
- Protocol: RTMP/RTMPS are supported; YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection.
Use the following H.264 live-ingestion bitrate reference from YouTube. Each range is shown as minimum, then recommended bitrate.
| Resolution and frame rate | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 360p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
For example, select the 1080p30 recommendation if the outgoing feed is 1080p at 30 fps; use the 1080p60 row for 60 fps. A higher bitrate is not a substitute for matching the frame rate and resolution you actually send.

Keep source-file settings separate from live-feed settings
A prerecorded file and the live signal sent by an encoder are different parts of the workflow. If you prepare a video file before playing it into an encoder, YouTube’s separate upload guidance lists MP4, H.264, AAC-LC, 48 kHz audio, progressive scan, and a closed GOP among supported or recommended upload choices. These upload recommendations do not replace YouTube’s live-ingestion bitrate and keyframe guidance above. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Configure and start the stream
- Prepare the programme. Check that the recording plays from beginning to end, that its audio is present and in sync, and that any playlist or loop order is intentional. Confirm you have the rights needed to stream the material.
- Create or schedule the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the event. Follow the current prompts there; available controls can depend on the channel and event setup.
- Copy the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Enter them in your encoder’s YouTube destination settings. The stream key is a credential: do not publish or share it. Reset it if you believe it has been exposed. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the connection workflow.
- Set the outgoing encoder. Choose H.264 video, AAC audio, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, the bitrate for the selected output resolution and frame rate, and stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps if following YouTube’s stereo recommendation. Choose RTMPS when available.
- Check the connection budget. YouTube advises that outbound bandwidth should support the total stream bitrate and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Include audio and any other outbound traffic in your planning rather than sizing the connection to video bitrate alone. Its streaming tips cover bandwidth and test practices.
- Preview and test before relying on the stream. Confirm picture, sound, and event accessibility in Live Control Room. Test the intended playlist or playback source, inspect any local archive files, and test backup-encoder failover if you have it. YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance is useful if the preview or ingest behaves unexpectedly.
- Monitor the continuous run. A 24/7 feed still depends on the encoder, network, and source playback continuing to work. Arrange monitoring and a recovery plan for interruption; YouTube’s testing advice is operational guidance, not an uptime specification for unattended streams.
Choose a way to keep the feed running
You can encode with software on a computer or with a standalone hardware encoder. YouTube says professional-grade hardware may benefit higher-production-value streams, but hardware is not required. Compare options by whether they support RTMPS and your target resolution and frame rate, how they recover after power or network interruptions, what monitoring and failover they offer, and what they cost to operate. YouTube’s encoder setup page also surfaces Gyre for the prerecorded 24/7 use case; that mention alone does not establish current pricing, limits, or reliability.

Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud continues playback without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. It supports uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.

Having a technically valid H.264/AAC feed does not establish that you have permission to broadcast its contents or that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies. Check rights for every recording and music track, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization rules before building a continuous schedule. A loop can repeat content without changing the underlying rights or originality of that content. You can use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist as a practical review aid.

Troubleshooting common problems
- Live Control Room shows no incoming signal: check that the selected event, stream URL, and stream key match, that the encoder is actually sending, and that the network permits the chosen RTMPS/RTMP connection. If the key may be compromised, reset it and update the encoder.
- Video stutters or the connection drops: compare available outbound bandwidth with the total stream bitrate and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check for competing uploads, unstable network equipment, and interruptions in the playback source.
- Video looks poor despite a high bitrate: verify the outgoing resolution and frame rate, then select the corresponding bitrate row. Confirm the encoder is using H.264 and CBR rather than assuming the source file’s properties define the live output.
- Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync: inspect the encoder’s audio input and AAC selection, confirm the programme itself has a usable audio track, and check stereo sample rate and bitrate against YouTube’s recommendations.
- The stream fails after running for a while: review source-playlist continuity, encoder and network logs, and any failover setup. Test recovery deliberately before depending on an unattended schedule; no encoder setting by itself guarantees a 24/7 connection.
