But a playlist does not keep a broadcast running or switch viewers to another stream if your encoder fails. Treat viewer navigation, stream continuity, and recording preservation as three separate parts of your backup plan.
What a backup playlist can—and cannot—do
A playlist is a collection of videos and watch pages that you can organize and share. It can make it easier for documentary viewers to find the live event, past episodes, highlights, or an appropriate evergreen video if the scheduled event is not currently available. YouTube recommends organizing livestream archives and highlight clips in playlists. YouTube’s playlist help
It is not a failover system. YouTube’s cited guidance does not describe playlists as automatically redirecting viewers when a stream drops. A backup encoder, a local recording, and a playlist address different risks: encoder failure, loss of a recording, and viewer navigation, respectively.
How to create and share the playlist

Schedule the stream and save its watch-page link
In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule stream. Create a stream or reuse settings, then keep the scheduled watch-page URL for promotion and for adding to the playlist when it is available. YouTube says scheduled streams can be shared and promoted. If you are using an encoder, obtain the stream URL and stream key from YouTube and enter them in the encoder. See Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Create the playlist
Open an existing video’s watch page and choose More → Save → Create new playlist. Give it a clear title, such as “Live now and backup videos,” then choose its visibility. YouTube’s desktop help says a private playlist is visible only to its owner; choose a visibility that fits how you plan to share it. Create and manage playlists

Add the stream and useful related videos
Add the scheduled or live watch page when it can be selected, along with published livestream archives, highlights, and any appropriate evergreen fallback video. Check the playlist after each event and remove unavailable or stale items so viewers are not sent to the wrong destination.

Put the playlist where viewers will look
Share its link in established viewer instructions, such as your channel description, a pinned post, or a stream description. You can also promote the scheduled stream’s own watch-page link in advance; YouTube recommends sharing the stream link ahead of time. The playlist is an organizational convenience, not an outage redirect. Promote your live stream
Set up and test actual stream failover separately
If you use a primary and backup encoder, configure the backup and test the transition before relying on it. YouTube’s live-streaming tips specifically advise testing failover: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. This test demonstrates the rollover you configured; it does not establish uninterrupted service through every possible failure, such as a power or internet-provider outage, or a YouTube outage. Describe your backup according to what you have actually tested.
Keep an independent recording for a 24/7 stream
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 stream is longer than that threshold, so do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve the complete broadcast. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. Check that local recording is enabled in your production setup and that the file is being written successfully. If you retain recordings on external storage, choose capacity based on your resolution, codec, bitrate, and retention period; there is no sensible one-size-fits-all capacity without those details.
Protect the stream key and account for playlist limits
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube says a stream key acts like the stream’s password and address. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room. Manage live stream settings
- Do not confuse a playlist with continuity. A viewer can use a playlist to find videos, but its presence does not maintain the encoder connection or guarantee a fallback destination during an outage.
- Be aware of the creation limit if automating. YouTube’s playlist help notes a daily limit for public playlist creation across YouTube surfaces and the API. It is unlikely to matter when making one backup playlist, but can affect bulk or automated creation. Create and manage playlists
Common problems and what to check
- The stream does not appear in the playlist: keep the scheduled watch-page link and try adding the stream once it can be selected. In the meantime, share the scheduled stream link directly.
- Viewers reach an unavailable or outdated video: review the playlist after each stream and remove stale items; make sure the scheduled watch-page link is the one you are promoting.
- The backup encoder does not take over: repeat the deliberate failover test and confirm the player rolls over. Do not assume failover works because a second encoder is configured.
- The archive is incomplete or missing: a 24/7 stream exceeds YouTube’s stated 12-hour automatic-archive threshold. Check the independent local recording rather than assuming YouTube has captured the full stream.
- The stream key may have been exposed: treat it as a credential and reset it in Live Control Room.
