Export your active Profile and Scene Collection separately: a Profile does not contain your scenes. A rollback can restore a working setup, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted YouTube playback or preserve the same live event.
Before rolling back, protect your OBS setup
If the current OBS installation still opens, back up its configuration before changing versions. Store the exports somewhere the installer or application update will not overwrite. OBS explains that Profiles hold stream, video, and output settings and can be exported for backup or import into another installation. Scene Collections are separate. OBS’s guide states: “Profiles do NOT store your Scenes — use Scene Collections.” (OBS Profiles guide, published January 14, 2022.)
Export the active Profile
- In OBS, open the Profile menu and choose Import/Export.
- Export the active Profile to a JSON file, then save a copy outside the OBS installation folder.
- Keep track of which Profile was active; you may have more than one.
The Profile export backs up settings, not scenes. Do not treat it as a complete production backup.
Export the active Scene Collection separately
- Open the Scene Collection menu.
- Use its export option to save the active collection separately from the Profile.
- Store the export safely and note which collection was in use.
Scene sources may depend on media files, plugins, or paths outside the collection itself. Keep those assets available and check them again when you restore the setup.

If OBS will not open
The official instructions cited here do not provide a universal manual recovery sequence for a configuration that cannot be opened. Exact configuration-file locations and recovery steps vary by operating system. Avoid assuming that reinstalling OBS will preserve or restore every setting, credential, plugin, or media file; consult the OBS Help Portal for platform-specific support.
Choose a rollback route that fits your operating system
Find the intended version in the official OBS Studio releases history, and verify that the package is for your operating system before downloading. The archive changes over time. On October 3, 2026, it showed stable OBS Studio 32.2.2 and prerelease 33.0.0-beta4; those are observations from that date, not a promise that either is the latest or right for your setup.

If you are unsure whether the older build will work with your setup, test it with copies of the exported configuration where practical. Do not assume the downgrade will preserve plugin compatibility, credentials, or media paths.
Windows: use portable mode as an isolation test
A separate portable ZIP installation is an optional way to check an OBS version without sharing the normal installation’s configuration. It is not a universal rollback method, and it does not guarantee that switching encoders will keep a broadcast uninterrupted.

- Download the Windows ZIP package for the intended OBS release from the official releases history.
- Extract it to a separate folder rather than over your existing OBS installation.
- Follow the OBS portable-mode guide to enable portable mode for that copy.
- Open the portable copy and import or recreate the configuration using backups. Check that the intended Profile and Scene Collection are selected.
- Verify that every scene’s media sources resolve. Portable mode does not automatically bring along the media files used by scenes; keep external files accessible and confirm their paths.
The portable-mode guide does not support this method on macOS or Linux. For those systems, use the appropriate package for the chosen release and consult the official help resources for platform-specific questions.
Validate OBS before trusting it with the stream
After opening the chosen build, check the settings and dependencies that could prevent your production from working. These are operational checks, not a claim that a particular rollback has been tested.

- Profile and scenes: Select the intended Profile and Scene Collection. Check scene order, source visibility, and whether media sources load.
- Media paths: Confirm that video, audio, and other external assets are still available at their configured paths.
- YouTube connection: Check the stream service and account or stream-key configuration. Do not expose a stream key while saving or sharing screenshots.
- Video output: Confirm the intended resolution and frame rate in the restored settings.
- Audio: Check the expected input and output routing, and verify that the relevant sources are not muted or missing.
- Encoder: Confirm that the required encoder is available in this OBS build and that its output settings are usable for your setup.
- Plugins: Check whether each plugin the production depends on is available and compatible with the selected version. A rollback does not guarantee plugin compatibility.
If the encoder is already down, check YouTube before reconnecting
Open YouTube Studio’s live control room and inspect the actual broadcast state before deciding whether to reconnect OBS, restart the encoder, or create a new event. The sources cited here do not establish whether an encoder restart preserves a particular event, URL, archive, viewer session, or uninterrupted playback. Treat continuity as uncertain rather than assuming a rollback will keep the broadcast live.
