You can use VLC’s documented stream-output and VLM broadcast-loop features as building blocks, but the official documentation does not give a complete, verified procedure for sending a looping VLC MP4 feed to YouTube Live. Treat a direct VLC setup as version-dependent experimentation, not a guaranteed recipe. YouTube’s documented workflow is to enter its stream URL and key in encoder software, test the feed, and check it in Live Control Room before going public.
What you need before setting up a loop
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube states these eligibility requirements in its live-streaming tips.
- The MP4 file you want to broadcast, readable by VLC.
- An internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the selected video bitrate, plus room for audio and network variation.
- Access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and an encoder that can send a compatible feed.
VLC’s desktop guide is for VLC 3.0; menus and available options can vary by operating system and release. The official sources do not establish that a particular VLC configuration works end to end with YouTube Live, so test the exact setup before relying on it.
Understand the two separate pieces
VLC can stream output and loop a VLM broadcast list
VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 streaming guide describes processing media VLC can read and saving the result to a file or sending it over a network. Its output chain includes the std output module and an optional transcode stage. This documents general streaming capability; it does not specify YouTube’s ingest settings or a complete YouTube setup.
VideoLAN’s VLM documentation describes broadcast media with inputs, output, and options. Its loop option restarts a broadcast’s input list after the last input ends. That is different from clicking VLC’s ordinary playback-repeat control: the documentation does not establish that the player repeat button will keep an outbound network stream alive.

YouTube requires a compatible incoming encoder feed
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance tells creators to copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the corresponding server and key fields in encoder software. The encoder sends the feed; YouTube accepts it. VLC’s general network-output documentation does not confirm that its output protocol, container, and codec choices will match YouTube ingest in every build.
Configure the YouTube side
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use. Copy the displayed stream URL and stream key.
- Choose an encoder that supports the stream protocol shown in Live Control Room. For standard RTMP/RTMPS workflows, YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported; RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. Use the exact RTMPS URL YouTube provides rather than guessing or substituting one. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Enter the URL in the encoder’s server or stream-URL field and the key in its stream-key field. YouTube describes the key as password-like: do not share it or show it in screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset a key; see stream-key help.
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, check the preview and select Go live there when ready.
Use VLC’s documented loop capability cautiously
VLC VLM is the documented VLC mechanism for looping a broadcast input list. Conceptually, the broadcast contains the MP4 as an input, an output definition, and the loop option; VLM restarts the input list when playback reaches its end. The VLM guide documents these capabilities, but does not provide a verified end-to-end VLC-to-YouTube recipe.

Do not assume that setting a playback repeat control, or choosing any VLC network output, is sufficient. The output protocol, mux/container, video and audio codecs, and stream-key handling must all align with YouTube ingest, and those specifics are not established as a supported configuration by the reviewed VLC and YouTube guides. VLC versions and interfaces also differ. If you experiment with direct VLC output, validate the exact settings against the VLC version and YouTube ingest path you are using; do not describe the combination as guaranteed.
Set and test stream quality
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are platform settings recommendations, not test results for VLC.

| Output | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations for the listed resolutions and frame rates. Choose the matching row and ensure your sustained upload capacity can support it; the MP4’s source quality does not remove the encoder’s output requirements.
- Test with the same resolution, frame rate, audio, and representative movement as the intended broadcast. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Use a private or unlisted test stream if you want to check the setup without exposing a broken feed publicly.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Listen for audio and inspect motion and image quality; a static or silent file will not reveal every issue.
- Once the test works, start the intended stream and keep monitoring audio, video, and stream health.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming feed | Encoder connection, stream URL, key, or protocol | Confirm the URL and key exactly match Live Control Room, and that the encoder supports the displayed protocol. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| The video ends instead of looping | Loop mechanism | Confirm you configured a VLM broadcast loop; ordinary playback repeat is not documented as guaranteeing outbound stream continuity. |
| The broadcast starts but video or audio is missing or incompatible | Output format or codec | Check the encoder output against YouTube’s codec guidance and inspect the Live Control Room preview. The official guides do not verify every VLC output combination. |
| Stream health reports problems or playback stutters | Bitrate and upload capacity | Compare output settings with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected resolution and frame rate, then check whether the connection can sustain that bitrate. |
| The feed arrives but a scheduled stream is not public | Live Control Room handoff | Check the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room when ready. |
| You cannot start a stream | Channel eligibility | Check channel verification and whether there have been live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. |
End the stream safely
Stop sending content from the encoder, then end the stream in Live Control Room as applicable. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder setup guidance. An archive is not a substitute for checking that the live broadcast ended as intended.
