The on-screen label is separate from the livestream’s YouTube watch-page title, which you edit in YouTube Studio.
Choose which title you want viewers to see
A now-playing title is text composited into the live video. It can change as your loop advances, so viewers watching the stream can identify the current documentary or episode.
The YouTube livestream title is broadcast metadata shown on the watch page. It does not automatically change just because the video inside your stream moves to another item. Manage it separately in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance covers stream metadata.
Also distinguish a live encoder stream from looping a video or playlist while watching YouTube. YouTube’s loop instructions describe repeating playback on YouTube; they do not make that playback an encoder-based livestream.

Display a now-playing title in OBS
OBS provides text sources that can read from a file, browser sources that show a web page, and a VLC video source that can play and loop a playlist. A VLC source requires VLC to be installed. These features provide ways to put a title on screen, but a playlist alone does not automatically synchronize its current item with the text overlay. See the OBS Sources Guide and OBS Media Sources documentation.
Option 1: Update a text file manually
- In OBS, open the scene used for the livestream and add the video playback source.
- Add a text source to the same scene and position it above the video where viewers can read it.
- Configure the text source to read from a text file, then select a file on the computer running OBS.
- Put the current video’s title in that file. When playback advances, replace the text with the next title and save the file.
- Check the OBS preview to confirm the updated text appears. This approach is straightforward, but someone must update the file at every transition.
Option 2: Show a browser overlay
- Create or use a web page that displays the now-playing title.
- In the OBS scene, add a browser source and configure it to display that page.
- Style the page so the title remains legible over the video and fits the scene.
- Update the page’s title manually, or connect it to an integration that can provide the active item.
A browser source makes the design flexible, but it does not by itself know which playlist item is playing. Automatic updates depend on the page or integration receiving a dependable current-item value.

Option 3: Automate the update with an integration
A script or service can update an overlay if it can reliably identify the item currently playing in your specific setup. The relevant data and method depend on whether playback comes from an OBS media source, an OBS VLC playlist, a browser player, or a separate playback computer. Confirm that the integration works with your actual player and playlist before relying on it during a live broadcast.
OBS documents the source types and VLC playlist playback, but not a universal signal that synchronizes every player’s active title with overlay text. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes broadcast metadata; it does not establish that the API can identify the current item inside a separate player.

Test the title before streaming
- Advance through several playlist items and confirm the on-screen title changes at the right transition.
- Check what appears when a title is missing, unusually long, or wraps onto another line.
- Test the transition where the playlist wraps back to its first item.
- Restart playback and OBS, then verify the displayed title matches the item that actually starts.
- Check the production preview and stream quality before going live. YouTube recommends testing an encoder stream and checking its preview before an event in its encoder livestream guidance.
Keep the livestream title and overlay separate
Use the overlay for the title of the video currently playing. Set the YouTube watch-page title as broadcast metadata in YouTube Studio; change it separately if you want it to describe the overall stream. Do not assume that updating one changes the other.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Or let it run in the cloud
If the loop should keep running without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed. Its published product information does not establish that it automatically creates or updates a now-playing overlay, so use a separately verified overlay workflow if viewers need changing on-screen titles.
