To make every clip in an OBS YouTube playlist appear at a consistent size, add OBS’s Scaling/Aspect Ratio filter to the source that plays the playlist and set its Resolution to match your composition. For a playlist made with OBS’s VLC Video source, add the filter to that source. This can fix the symptom of a smaller clip appearing in the top-left with black space around it, though the result should be checked with your own files.
Normalize playlist clips with a source filter
- Identify the playlist source. In OBS’s Sources list, find the source that renders the playlist. For a local-file playlist, OBS documents the VLC Video source as its playlist option; VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS’s built-in Media Source is for individual media files. OBS Media Sources.
- Open the source’s filters. Right-click the playlist source in the Sources list and select Filters. OBS filters are attached to a source or scene. OBS Filters.
- Add the filter. In the Filters window, add OBS’s built-in Scaling/Aspect Ratio filter.
- Set a common resolution. In the filter’s Resolution property, choose dimensions or an aspect ratio that suits the frame you are building. For a 16:9 layout, examples include 1920×1080 or 1280×720. The filter sets the source’s new resolution or aspect ratio; it does not add detail that was absent from a lower-resolution original. OBS Scaling/Aspect Ratio Filter.
- Check the framing. Preview several playlist entries, including the smallest and largest files and clips with different aspect ratios. Decide whether to show the full image with unused space, crop the image to fill the frame, or stretch it. Stretching distorts proportions and OBS describes it as rarely advisable. A community user reported that this filter resolved the same mixed-resolution playlist symptom, but that is an anecdotal report, not a guarantee for every file or OBS version. Community discussion.
Choose how mismatched aspect ratios should look
Resolution and aspect ratio are related but different: two clips can have different pixel dimensions while sharing the same proportions, or they can have different proportions as well. A 16:9 frame is a common YouTube target; OBS lists 1920×1080, 1280×720 and 3840×2160 as examples. Pick a target your production can support. OBS Aspect Ratio Guide.

Why changing the canvas or output resolution may not fix it
OBS’s Base (Canvas) Resolution is the space where you arrange sources. Output (Scaled) Resolution sets the dimensions used for the stream or recording. If you compose at 1080p and stream at 720p, the output setting controls the scaled output. Neither global setting replaces a per-source filter when individual playlist clips render at inconsistent sizes. Changing the base canvas can also require repositioning or resizing scene sources. Use the playlist-source filter to address inconsistent clip sizing within the composition. Change output resolution or frame rate only when you are addressing output requirements or performance—not as a substitute for normalizing how each clip fits.
If the filter does not affect every playlist item
- Confirm the correct source. The filter must be on the source that actually renders the playlist, such as the VLC Video source, rather than a different media source or an unrelated scene element.
- Check VLC and OBS architecture. If using VLC Video, make sure VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS; OBS’s guidance specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. OBS Media Sources.
- Test representative files. Preview clips with different dimensions and aspect ratios, not only the first playlist item. OBS documents what the filter can set but does not promise identical behavior for every media file or version.
- Separate sizing from choppy playback. A clip that is the right size but stutters points to a different problem. OBS recommends lowering output resolution or frame rate to reduce resource use; lowering the base canvas can complicate scene management. OBS Standard Recording Guide.
