Vandoliers singer and songwriter Jenni Rose came out publicly as a trans woman in April 2025, after first telling friends and family in late 2024. A 2023 protest performance in a dress helped her recognize a part of herself she had kept hidden, but it was not a public coming-out announcement. Her evolving understanding of her gender also shaped the writing behind Life Behind Bars, the band’s June 2025 album.
How Jenni Rose came out
Rose is the lead singer and songwriter of Vandoliers, a Texas country-punk band. Her path to coming out unfolded over several years rather than in one announcement.
The 2023 dress protest
In early 2023, Vandoliers wore dresses at a show in Maryville, Tennessee, in protest after the state’s governor signed a law described by the band’s publicity page as a drag ban. Rose later said it was the first time she had worn a dress in public. Images from the performance spread widely, and she said seeing them helped break down a barrier around a part of herself she had kept hidden. The performance marked a moment of self-recognition; it did not mean she came out publicly then. Missing Piece Group’s account of the band describes the moment and Rose’s reflection on it.
From telling loved ones to telling the public
Rose came out to friends and family in late 2024, according to Nashville Scene. In a later interview with Dallas Voice, Rose recalled telling her bandmates while they were traveling in the van. She said they responded warmly. In April 2025, she shared her story publicly with fans and a broader audience.

How coming out connected with Life Behind Bars
Released in June 2025, Life Behind Bars is Vandoliers’ fifth studio album, as described in a February 2026 interview with High Plains Public Radio. Rose has connected writing the record with recognizing her gender dysphoria and working toward sobriety. The band’s publicity page says producer Ted Hutt encouraged her to dig deeper into her writing; the album was recorded at Sonic Ranch.
The record keeps Vandoliers’ rough, rowdy country-punk sound while making room for quieter, more vulnerable songs. Nashville Scene points to “You Can’t Party With the Lights On” and the title track as examples. In the latter, the image of being trapped reaches beyond Rose’s own experience: bandmate Cory Graves said, “We all feel trapped by something in our lives, almost everyone.”

That context does not make every earlier Vandoliers song a statement about gender dysphoria. Rose and the reporting describe a new understanding of some past lyrics, not a single explanation for the band’s whole catalogue.
Her experience as a trans musician in Texas
Rose has spoken about the pressure she feels as a trans woman in Texas. In her February 2026 High Plains Public Radio interview, she said, “My nervous system is on high alert pretty much all the time.” That is her account of her own experience, not a claim that it represents every trans person or every musician in the state.

She has also described support from inside the band and connection with people in the audience. According to Nashville Scene and Dallas Voice, Rose has talked about queer fans, young people and parents of trans children finding meaning in Vandoliers’ shows. The welcome she describes is part of her story alongside the fear and vigilance she has expressed.

Vandoliers released “Girl on the Run” in 2026. Rose described it as a protest song about a trans woman from Texas fleeing with her family. She wrote it during her first tour after coming out, imagining a fearful flight shaped by the desire to protect herself and her loved ones. In her June 2026 Dallas Voice interview, she called it “the most important song I’ve ever written” and said she hoped it would reach queer and trans listeners.

The song extends the personal questions surrounding Life Behind Bars into a more explicitly political frame: what it feels like to live with fear, and what safety might require. Rose’s description grounds the song in an imagined story of a trans woman and her family, rather than presenting it as a universal account of trans life.
