30 fps

Is 30 fps or 60 fps Better for Prerecorded YouTube Live Videos?

Match your YouTube Live frame rate to the recording: 30 fps for a 30 fps source, or 60 fps for captured motion detail when your connection can sustain the higher bitrate.

Use the frame rate your video was recorded in: keep a 30 fps source at 30 fps, and keep a 60 fps source at 60 fps when motion detail matters and your connection can sustain YouTube’s recommended bitrate. Sending a 30 fps recording at 60 fps does not restore motion that the camera never captured. YouTube supports live streams up to 60 fps, but that is a maximum, not a requirement.

Choose the source frame rate, not the biggest number

YouTube recommends encoding and uploading video at the frame rate at which it was recorded. That guidance is a useful starting point for prerecorded live video too: preserve the source cadence rather than converting it just because the encoder offers a higher setting. YouTube lists common rates including 30 and 60 fps in its recommended upload encoding settings.

  • Choose 30 fps for a 30 fps source. It is also a sensible choice when the footage has ordinary movement or when a lower bitrate demand is helpful.
  • Choose 60 fps for a 60 fps source when fine motion detail matters, such as in fast gameplay or sports footage, and the stream can meet YouTube’s recommended bitrate for its resolution and codec.
  • Do not convert 30 fps to 60 fps expecting an upgrade. The added output frames cannot recreate motion frames that were not recorded.

The examples of gameplay and sports are practical guidance, not a genre-by-genre rule published by YouTube.

Check the bitrate cost before choosing 60 fps

YouTube’s live encoder guidance allows frame rates up to 60 fps and gives different recommended bitrates by resolution, frame rate and codec. For H.264 at 1080p, the recommendation is 14 Mbps at 30 fps and 17 Mbps at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of what viewers will see or an independent quality test. Use the row for your actual resolution and codec in YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

1080p H.264 stream YouTube recommended bitrate Practical implication
30 fps 14 Mbps Lower recommended bitrate than 60 fps; appropriate for a 30 fps source.
60 fps 17 Mbps Higher recommended bitrate; useful when preserving motion detail from a 60 fps source.

These recommendations concern the encoder’s outgoing stream. Leave headroom in your sustained upload connection rather than treating the stated bitrate as a safe minimum for an unstable connection. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks; that does not remove the need to send a stable stream from your encoder.

Set up a prerecorded live stream

Frame-rate choice is separate from scheduling. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses Live Control Room and connects an encoder with a stream URL and stream key. The stream key identifies the stream destination; keep it private.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and schedule or create the live stream using YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Configure the encoder to use the source’s frame rate, then select the matching resolution, codec and bitrate recommendation from YouTube’s live settings page.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream setup into the encoder. Do not share the key publicly.
  4. Test the stream before relying on it, then check stream health in Live Control Room while it is running. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health.

YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video codecs in its live encoder guidance. Select settings supported by both your encoder and the stream workflow. For general setup and testing advice, see YouTube’s live streaming tips.

When a cloud service is more practical than a computer

For an occasional scheduled stream, connecting an encoder yourself may be enough. If you need prerecorded video to keep looping while your computer is off, a cloud service can handle the continuous playback. YouTube’s verified-encoder information describes Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video live streaming and notes Full HD and 4K at 30/60 fps; that description is not an independent reliability comparison.

Troubleshoot a soft or unstable stream

  • 60 fps looks no smoother than 30 fps: confirm that the source itself was recorded at 60 fps. A 30 fps source sent at 60 fps does not gain captured motion detail.
  • The stream buffers or reports poor health: check whether your sustained upload connection can carry the bitrate for the selected resolution, frame rate and codec. Compare the encoder setting with YouTube’s matching recommendation and test before the scheduled stream.
  • The encoder will not accept the settings: verify that the selected codec and frame rate are supported by your encoder, then use YouTube’s live settings table for the appropriate combination.
  • The stream does not connect: check that the encoder has the correct stream URL and current stream key from the scheduled stream’s setup in Live Control Room.
