If only some videos in an OBS playlist show black, check the playlist setup and source visibility first, then test the failing files individually. For a playlist, OBS documents the VLC Video source, which depends on VLC being installed with the same architecture as OBS. A file extension by itself does not guarantee that its internal encoding will play. The symptoms can have different causes; there is no single fix established for every case.
Start with the source type and playlist
OBS has two relevant source types. Media Source is intended for adding media to a scene; VLC Video is similar but supports playlists and uses VLC libraries for extended media support. OBS’s documentation lists video extensions for Media Source including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, but that list does not guarantee support for every codec or encoding stored in those containers. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes these source types and their settings.
- For a playlist, use VLC Video. Add each video through the source’s playlist controls. Don’t enter a media or stream link as the source’s name and assume it has been added as a playlist item. In one OBS forum report, correcting that setup mistake resolved that user’s case; it is a check, not a universal diagnosis. OBS forum setup report.
- For a single-file test, try Media Source. Add one failing video to a scene as a Media Source. This helps distinguish a playlist setup or transition problem from a file that does not play by itself.
- Check the playlist entries. Confirm the affected files appear in the playlist, and that the paths still point to the files you intend to play.
Make sure OBS can show the source
In the Sources list, check that the source’s eye icon is enabled. OBS layers sources: items higher in the list appear over lower ones and can cover their picture. Temporarily move the video source above other sources to see whether an overlay is hiding it. OBS’s Sources Guide explains visibility and source order.
Check the VLC dependency
If VLC Video is missing from the source menu, install VLC. OBS says VLC must be installed for the source to appear, and its architecture must match OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

The VLC Video source includes playlist looping and shuffle controls, along with settings for visibility behavior, network caching, audio track, and subtitles. OBS documents loop on and shuffle off as defaults, and a default network-caching value of 400 ms. That cache setting is a source setting, not evidence that changing it fixes black video in general.
Isolate the files that fail
- Test one failing file by itself, first in the playlist source and then, if useful, as a Media Source.
- Compare it with a file that plays: note the extension and, if known, the encoding. The extension list in OBS’s documentation is not a complete codec compatibility matrix.
- Record when the picture goes black: immediately, on a transition, after shuffling, or only after a long playback session. Also note whether audio continues.
Users have described black video with audio during playlist shuffling and failures after hours of playback from long playlists. Those reports show that the symptoms occur, but they do not establish a common cause or a reliable fix. OBS forum reports.

What the symptom pattern can—and cannot—tell you

Troubleshoot in a safe order
- If VLC Video is unavailable: install VLC and match its architecture to OBS.
- If only one or a few files fail: test each on its own and compare it with a working file. Do not assume that matching extensions mean matching codec support.
- If the source seems active but its picture is absent: enable its eye icon and temporarily move it above other sources.
- If audio continues but video is black: record which file and playlist position trigger the symptom, then test that file alone. The symptom alone does not identify the root cause.
- If playback works initially but fails later: note how long it ran and whether the failure followed a transition or shuffle. Existing user reports do not establish a universal long-playback fix.
- If other video applications also show black: graphics-driver investigation may be reasonable, but the available driver report is one user’s experience, not a confirmed remedy.
