Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. The recommendation applies to the live stream sent to YouTube; its published live guidance does not specify a separate GOP length for prerecorded source footage.
Recommended GOP length for YouTube Live
Set the keyframe interval on the encoder outputting your live stream to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends that interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds in its live encoder settings guidance. Treat 4 seconds as a ceiling, not the target.
Use a closed GOP where your encoder provides that option. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding.
Convert the interval to frames
GOP length is often entered as a number of frames rather than seconds. Multiply the outgoing frame rate by the interval in seconds:

| Outgoing frame rate | Frames for a 2-second interval |
|---|---|
| 24 fps | 48 frames |
| 30 fps | 60 frames |
| 60 fps | 120 frames |
The frame values are arithmetic conversions of YouTube’s 2-second live recommendation. YouTube’s troubleshooting page gives the 30 fps example: 30 × 2 = 60 frames.
Why prerecorded footage does not change the live setting
If you are sending prerecorded video as a live stream, distinguish the source file from the outgoing live stream. YouTube’s 2-second recommendation concerns the encoder output being ingested as a live stream; its live guidance does not publish a special interval for prerecorded source footage.

YouTube has separate guidance for uploaded H.264 files: it recommends a closed GOP with a GOP length of half the frame rate. That upload recommendation is for an uploaded video file, not a replacement for the live-stream interval. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Apply and verify the encoder settings
- Find the output encoder setting. Set the keyframe interval or GOP length on the software or hardware encoder sending the live stream to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes both software and standalone hardware encoder routes.
- Enter 2 seconds, or its frame equivalent. If the setting is in frames, use the outgoing frame rate multiplied by two—for example, 60 frames at 30 fps.
- Choose closed GOP. If the encoder exposes a closed/fixed GOP option, use it for optimal YouTube transcoding.
- Check again if frame rate changes. A change in frame rate can require changing the keyframe frequency so the interval remains two seconds.
- Check actual ingest if YouTube reports slow keyframes. YouTube notes that ingestion errors can lead to incorrect GOP sizes. Verify the stream’s received frame rate and GOP rather than relying only on the configured value.
Related live settings and failure symptoms
The GOP recommendation sits alongside YouTube’s other live encoder requirements: its settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, and CBR bitrate encoding. Its advanced recommendations include progressive scan and two B-frames. These settings do not change the 2-second keyframe target.

- Keyframes arrive too slowly or buffering occurs: check the actual keyframe interval and ingestion. YouTube says insufficiently frequent keyframes can cause buffering.
- Image quality falls with a very short GOP: YouTube notes that a GOP that is too small can reduce image quality. Use the recommended two-second interval rather than making the GOP arbitrarily short.
