OBS supports several video containers, and its VLC Video Source can play a playlist directly. First try your files in OBS; batch-convert only the ones that fail or when you specifically want a consistent format for YouTube uploads.
Do you need to convert all videos to MP4 for OBS?
No. A file extension describes its container, not necessarily the codecs inside it. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WEBM among supported video types, but a file’s specific audio or video codec can still affect playback. Try a representative file in OBS before converting a whole library. See the OBS Media Sources guide and its Audio/Video Formats Guide.
Convert when a file does not play reliably, its codecs are incompatible with your intended workflow, or you want a consistent format for YouTube uploads. If your goal is an OBS playlist, playback compatibility is the immediate test; YouTube’s upload recommendations are a related but separate consideration.
How do I add a playlist of videos to OBS?
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video Source depends on VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so the architectures match. Restart OBS if the source does not appear after installation.
- Add the source. In OBS, use the Sources panel’s add control and select VLC Video Source. OBS documents this source for playlist playback in its Media Sources guide.
- Add the clips. In the source properties, add the video files and arrange them in the sequence you want. The playlist order is controlled in the source, not by converting the files.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable looping if the list should restart after its last clip. Enable shuffle only if you want playback order randomized; leave it off for a fixed sequence.
- Check the result. Play the list and verify picture, sound, clip duration and order. If conversion is needed, test one representative output in this source before processing the rest.
How should you batch-convert videos to MP4?
The conversion recipe depends on the source codecs and the converter you choose. The available documentation establishes OBS and YouTube format guidance, but not a particular converter’s interface, command line or batch behavior. Do not assume that selecting “MP4” alone creates H.264 video or compatible audio; confirm the output settings in your chosen application.

Choose remuxing or transcoding
- Remux changes the container while copying the existing audio and video streams without re-encoding. It can be appropriate if the streams already suit the destination and only the container is the issue.
- Transcode re-encodes one or more streams. Use it when the source codecs need to change, but understand that quality, file size and processing time depend on the source and settings. Re-encoding can reduce quality; there is no universal outcome for every file.
Before starting a batch, inspect a source file’s codecs and choose an output profile that matches the actual need. Preserve the original files until you have checked the converted versions.
What format does YouTube recommend for uploads?
YouTube’s published upload guidance recommends an MP4 container and H.264 video, with AAC-LC, Opus or Eclipsa Audio listed as audio codec options. It recommends keeping the frame rate the same as the rate at which the content was recorded. Avoid blindly upscaling resolution or changing frame rate. For SDR uploads, YouTube lists these recommended bitrate references. They are guidance, not minimum requirements or a universal prescription for converting every source:

Use the settings appropriate to the original material and the destination. A playlist intended for OBS playback does not automatically need to be transcoded to these upload bitrates.

Batch uploading is different from batch conversion
YouTube’s ordinary desktop upload flow allows selecting up to 15 videos at a time. That is multi-select upload support, not automatic conversion or metadata processing: details still need editing for each file. See Upload YouTube videos.
Why won’t my MP4 play in OBS?
- The codec may be unsupported or problematic. MP4 is a container and can hold different video and audio codecs. Check the streams rather than relying on the extension, then transcode if needed.
- The file may not be playable in the selected source. Try the VLC Video Source for a playlist and confirm VLC is installed with the same 64-bit or 32-bit architecture as OBS.
- The batch output may not match the intended settings. Check that the converter actually produced MP4 with the intended video and audio codecs; do not infer codec from the filename.
- The playlist behavior may be misconfigured. Review the VLC Video Source’s file list, ordering, loop and shuffle options.
