The best way is to separate the YouTube broadcast from the schedule that chooses what plays: use YouTube Studio or the Live Streaming API to send one continuous live feed, and use a playout calendar to rotate videos by time block. YouTube schedules the broadcast, not a recurring media lineup. For rotating documentaries, plan each block’s start time, duration, asset, playback rule, and fallback before connecting the playout output to YouTube.
What schedules the broadcast, and what schedules the videos?
There are two distinct jobs in a 24/7 prerecorded stream. YouTube is the destination and live-broadcast layer; a playout system decides which video or playlist is on air at a given time.
- YouTube Studio / Live Control Room: Create or schedule a live broadcast, connect an encoder using YouTube’s server URL and stream key, check the preview, and—when it is a scheduled broadcast—select Go live. Scheduling can help promote the stream and lets viewers receive reminders. YouTube’s encoder guide documents this workflow.
- Playout calendar: Set recurring time blocks, choose the video or playlist for each block, specify loop or play-once behavior, and decide what fills a gap. A documented calendar example supports daily, weekly, and monthly recurrence, with a fallback playlist, single video, or black slate. These are vendor-documented capabilities, not an independent reliability assessment. See the playout.video calendar guide.
In Google’s API model, a liveBroadcast is the event that becomes a YouTube video; a liveStream describes the incoming audio/video feed. A stream can be reused for broadcasts at different times. Google also documents keeping one 24/7 broadcast running while starting a separate overlapping broadcast for an interview carried within the same feed; completing the interview broadcast does not stop the continuous feed. Choose a workflow for your schedule
Hosted playout calendar
Choose a hosted playout system when you want a calendar to control recurring blocks without maintaining your own always-on server. Check that the tool supports the recurrence pattern, loop/play-once choice, fallback behavior, and change handling your schedule needs. playout.video says that edits made during a live stream take effect at the next slot transition and that its calendar preserves progress across restarts; those are the vendor’s claims, not independently verified uptime results. OneStream Live
OneStream Live’s help page, updated September 3, 2026, describes scheduling a 24-hour YouTube stream using videos selected from a device, its library, or cloud storage. It says the 24/7 feature is exclusive to YouTube, requires an Enterprise plan, and has a maximum duration of 30 days. Confirm current plan terms and limits before purchasing. Custom integration with YouTube’s API
Use the Live Streaming API if you need to create and bind broadcasts programmatically or handle a separate event broadcast within a continuous feed. The API covers broadcast creation, binding, and state transitions; its documented resource model does not itself provide a recurring media-block calendar. You still need a playout mechanism to change the media. Google’s API reference lists the available methods.

Local encoder and automation
A local encoder can give you direct control over the feed, but you take responsibility for the computer, source files, power, network, and restart or scheduling automation. YouTube’s guide supports software and hardware encoders and explains how to provide the stream URL and key; it does not prescribe a particular automation setup. Start with YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Design a rotating schedule that has no accidental gaps
- Set the schedule’s time zone. Record it alongside the timetable so collaborators know what each start time means, including when clocks change.
- Prepare and label assets. Use rights-cleared video files and consistent names that identify the program and version. Keep a separate record of which asset belongs to each block.
- Define every block. For each entry, specify its start, duration, video or playlist, and whether it loops to fill the slot or plays once. Verify the selected tool’s behavior when a video ends before the next block starts.
- Choose gap content. Set an intentional fallback—such as a fallback playlist, a standby video, or a black slate—rather than leaving the result of an empty calendar slot to chance. The playout.video calendar documentation describes those fallback types.
- Plan special programming. Decide whether a special event replaces a block or appears as a separate broadcast within the continuous feed. Google’s API documentation describes the latter pattern for an interview embedded in a 24/7 stream.
- Connect and verify the output. Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast, supply the server URL and stream key to the playout output or encoder, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream state before relying on the schedule. For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube’s documented flow includes manually selecting Go live after previewing.
- Make a recovery plan. Decide who checks the stream and what to do if the feed stops or a schedule change fails. Verify the output after configuration changes instead of assuming the calendar alone confirms that YouTube is receiving the intended video.
Plan for YouTube archives and separate event videos
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; do not assume it guarantees an automatic archive for a continuous 24/7 broadcast. If keeping a complete program archive matters, plan a separate recording or shorter broadcast strategy and verify the result in your channel. YouTube’s encoder guide covers its archive guidance.

If a special program needs its own event video while remaining part of the continuous feed, Google’s API model allows a separate overlapping broadcast for that segment. The continuous broadcast and the event broadcast are separate resources; completing the event broadcast does not, in Google’s documented example, end the ongoing feed. Common scheduling problems and what to check
- The right stream is live, but the wrong program is playing: Check the playout calendar’s time zone, block boundaries, selected asset, and whether a change made during a live slot is applied immediately or at the next transition. For playout.video, next-transition behavior is the vendor’s documented claim.
- A gap appears between blocks: Check whether the outgoing item is set to play once, whether its runtime matches the block, and whether a fallback is configured for unscheduled time.
- The YouTube broadcast is scheduled but not live: Confirm the encoder or playout output is sending to the intended stream, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and follow YouTube’s scheduled-broadcast flow to select Go live when required.
- A special event ends and the 24/7 feed also stops: In an API-based setup, check that the event and continuous broadcast are separate broadcasts rather than treating the event as the only feed. Google’s example keeps the ongoing broadcast live after the interview broadcast completes.
- You cannot find a full archive of the continuous stream: YouTube’s stated automatic archive rule covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed archive for a 24/7 broadcast. Use a separate recording or a shorter-broadcast plan if a complete archive is required.
- A service’s limits do not fit the schedule: Confirm the current plan, maximum duration, and source-selection requirements with the provider. OneStream Live’s cited help page states an Enterprise requirement and 30-day maximum for its documented 24/7 feature; those terms may change.
