Spoilers for HBO’s completed Game of Thrones series and the published A Song of Ice and Fire novels. In the HBO series, Jon Snow is revealed to be Aegon Targaryen, the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. He is not the same character as the young man known as Young Griff in the novels, who claims to be another son of Rhaegar. The show and books handle these identities differently.
Why there is more than one Aegon Targaryen
Aegon is a recurring Targaryen name, not a unique identity. The numbered Aegons are kings listed in the dynasty’s regnal sequence; princes, children and other members of the family also bore the name. Jon’s show identity and Young Griff’s book identity belong to still another layer: adaptation-specific storylines.
Keeping those categories separate avoids two common errors: assuming every Aegon became king, and treating the show’s Jon reveal as if it settled the novels’ separate Aegon mystery.
- Numbered kings: Aegon I through Aegon V, rulers from different periods.
- Other family members: Aegons who were not among those numbered kings.
- Continuity-specific identities: Jon in HBO’s series and Young Griff in the published novels.
The numbered Aegon kings
| Name | Generation or epithet | Continuity and status |
|---|---|---|
| Aegon I Targaryen | “The Conqueror” | The first numbered king, associated with the conquest that founded Targaryen rule. |
| Aegon II Targaryen | Associated with the Dance of the Dragons | A later numbered king whose reign is tied to the Targaryen civil war dramatized in the wider television franchise. |
| Aegon III Targaryen | “The Dragonbane” | The next numbered king in the succession after Aegon II. |
| Aegon IV Targaryen | “The Unworthy” | A later king whose legitimization of bastards contributed to later succession conflict and Blackfyre history. |
| Aegon V Targaryen | “The Unlikely”; called Egg in his youth | A later king whose early life is covered in the Dunk and Egg stories. He is not Jon Snow or one of Rhaegar’s sons. |
The numbering is a sequence of kings, not a census of everyone named Aegon. It is therefore not a shortcut for identifying a person across generations or continuities.

Other Aegons in the Targaryen family
Aegon, son of Aerys II and Rhaella
A separate Aegon belongs to the generation of Aerys II, the Mad King, and Queen Rhaella. He is distinct from both Jon and the Aegon associated with Rhaegar and Elia. The available account does not establish enough detail to confidently expand his fate here.
The Aegon associated with Rhaegar and Elia
In the published novels, a young man called Young Griff claims to be the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Elia Martell. That claim is not conclusively settled in the published story. Keep the distinction between the character’s claim and confirmed identity: Young Griff’s storyline is not the HBO series’ Jon Snow reveal.

Is Jon Snow really Aegon Targaryen?
In HBO’s Game of Thrones, yes. The series reveals Jon as the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, and gives him the birth name Aegon. Ned Stark raises him under the identity of his bastard son, Jon Snow.
This is a television-series revelation. The published novels have not established Jon’s birth name and parentage in the same way, so the show’s answer should not be stated as settled book canon.

Is Young Griff the same person as Jon Snow?
No—not as the stories are presented. HBO’s Jon is Rhaegar and Lyanna’s son; the novels’ Young Griff claims to be Rhaegar and Elia’s son. They are separate characters and separate storylines. The show’s reveal does not verify Young Griff’s claim, and the novels’ unresolved claim does not change Jon’s television identity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should Jon be called Aegon VI?
Not without qualification. “Aegon VI” is sometimes used informally for Jon in explanatory material, but the numbered sequence refers to kings, and succession, recognition and continuity complicate applying that label to him. In the series, it is accurate to say Jon’s birth name is Aegon; calling him Aegon VI as an uncontested historical title goes further than that reveal establishes.

How to follow the Aegon stories
- When discussing Aegon I through Aegon V, identify them as numbered kings and use their epithets where relevant.
- When discussing Jon, specify that the parentage and birth-name reveal comes from HBO’s series.
- When discussing Young Griff, say that he claims to be Rhaegar and Elia’s son; do not present the claim as confirmed.
- For broader earlier Targaryen history, Fire & Blood covers the dynasty’s past. The published A Song of Ice and Fire novels contain the separate Young Griff storyline. Neither reading recommendation turns the unresolved book identity into a settled fact.
