How to set up a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream
- Confirm that the content is prerecorded. A cloud playlist can loop uploaded files; it does not replace a live camera, game, or other source that changes continuously.
- Check your channel’s live-streaming access in YouTube Studio. Confirm streaming is enabled before choosing a launch date. Eligibility and enablement can depend on the individual account.
- Choose a cloud playlist service. YouTube’s verified encoder directory is a discovery starting point, not an endorsement: YouTube says listed products are not made by YouTube. Compare providers on recovery, monitoring, file constraints, playlist behavior, stream quality, and current terms.
- Connect the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and obtain the server URL and stream key. Enter these in the provider’s YouTube connection or streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: give it only to a service you trust, restrict access, and rotate it if exposed.
- Upload and arrange the videos. Build the playlist in the desired order or shuffle it if the provider supports that. Before uploading, check current limits for file size, duration, format, resolution, frame rate, and storage. Replace or reorder files only according to the provider’s controls.
- Configure the YouTube event. Set the title, description, thumbnail, visibility, and any scheduling details. Check how the provider binds the playlist to the event and whether the same watch page persists after an interruption; behavior can differ by service.
- Test before going public. Run a private or unlisted test and inspect the whole output: picture, sound, transitions, looping, metadata, chat moderation, and what happens if the connection drops. Confirm alerts or logs are available and that you know how to restart playback.
- Plan replays separately. YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived as one replay based on that guidance.
What the YouTube API does—and does not do
Google’s Live Streaming API lets developers create, update, schedule, and manage live events. It distinguishes a liveBroadcast, the event viewers watch, from a liveStream, the audio-video content sent to YouTube. Associating those resources can automate event setup, but the API does not host video or generate the feed. A source and encoder—or a cloud service that supplies them—are still needed.
YouTube’s ordinary encoder workflow also requires a server URL and stream key. Protect the key as a credential: do not expose it in public code, screenshots, or shared documents, and rotate it if someone else gains access.

Checks to make before choosing any provider
- Continuity and recovery: Ask how reconnection works, what health monitoring is available, and how you learn that playback stopped. Marketing terms such as “stable” are not an independent uptime record.
- Playlist control: Check whether videos play in order or shuffle, and whether you can replace or insert a file without ending the broadcast.
- Media limits: Verify file size, duration, accepted formats, resolution, frame rate, transcoding behavior, and storage or retention limits against current terms.
- YouTube event behavior: Confirm how titles, descriptions, thumbnails, and the live watch page are managed—and what viewers see after a restart or interruption.
- Security and operations: Check how stream keys are stored, who can access the connected channel, and whether logs and alerts are provided.
- Cost and exit: Review current subscription or usage charges, cancellation and export options, and what happens to an active stream if the subscription ends.

Do-it-yourself alternative: keep an encoder running
If you need to stream a live camera, game, or custom changing source—or prefer to manage the setup yourself—use a computer or server as the encoder. Unlike a cloud playlist, this method still requires the source and machine to stay available. YouTube’s standard workflow is to connect an encoder using its server URL and stream key.

- Enable live streaming for your channel in YouTube Studio and create the live event.
- Copy the server URL and stream key from the event’s encoder setup. Keep the key private and enter it only in your trusted encoder software.
- Configure the encoder with the source, output settings, server URL, and key. Choose a resolution and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain; YouTube’s guidance and your encoder’s current settings should govern the exact values for the format you plan to send.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview before making the event public. Watch for dropped frames, buffering, audio problems, or an unhealthy stream.
- Keep the source, computer/server, power, and network running for as long as the broadcast must stay live. Monitor the encoder and have a restart plan for software, power, or connectivity failures.
