What matters most for this workload
A VPS sending a prerecorded video to YouTube must keep the encoder process running and sustain the stream’s outbound bitrate. The central questions are whether the VPS needs to encode video in real time or can copy an already-compatible stream, whether its network route can sustain the bitrate with headroom, and how much outbound data the plan covers.
A plan’s advertised port speed is not proof that YouTube will receive an uninterrupted stream from your chosen region. DigitalOcean lists $0.01/GiB for additional outbound transfer, and transfer allowances pool at team level. Review its bandwidth billing documentation alongside the selected plan. Figures are published plan details, not a statement that either provider will sustain a particular stream.
Estimate outbound transfer before you choose
For a constant video bitrate, approximate monthly transfer as bitrate in megabits per second × 10.8 GB per day × number of days. This uses decimal gigabytes and excludes audio if it is additional to the stated total bitrate, protocol overhead, and variations in bitrate. YouTube’s bitrate recommendation is for the encoded stream; use the total actual output rate when estimating VPS egress.

These are planning estimates for a 30-day month, not guaranteed bills. Actual output bitrate, audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and other team traffic can change the total. If the video can be copied or remuxed
When the source already has a compatible video and audio stream, a process that copies the encoded tracks generally needs less CPU than real-time re-encoding. You still need enough memory and storage for the operating system, playlist, and files, plus a network connection that sustains the full output rate. Check that the source codecs, resolution, frame rate, and audio are accepted by your intended YouTube stream settings.
If the VPS must encode in real time
Real-time encoding can use substantially more CPU than sending an already-encoded file. The required CPU depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, and complexity of the footage. The plan tables do not establish how either provider’s vCPUs perform for your exact encoder settings. Start with a representative clip, monitor CPU and memory, and test for long enough to expose thermal, process, or network instability before relying on it.

Keep storage and recovery in the plan
Include the actual video files, playlists, logs, and any replacement assets in your storage estimate. Leave free disk space for updates and temporary files. Make the encoder process restart after a crash or reboot, and decide how you will be notified if the process stops; automatic restart alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving healthy video.
Set up a prerecorded stream from a VPS
- Prepare a rights-cleared source. Use video and audio you have permission to broadcast. A loop does not grant rights to copyrighted material or guarantee that a channel satisfies YouTube’s monetization or reused-content rules. Check YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content before scheduling a continuous broadcast.
- Create the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream, and obtain its RTMPS server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. Keep the key secret: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or log. See YouTube’s RTMPS guide and stream setup instructions.
- Install and test an encoder on the VPS. Install FFmpeg using the package source appropriate to the VPS operating system. Test the source file and outbound connection before depending on the host. The example below loops one file and re-encodes it to H.264/AAC; it is a template, not a universal command. Replace the file path, RTMPS URL, and key, and verify the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected codecs.
- Use YouTube-compatible settings. YouTube’s current guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 14 Mbps at 1080p60. Match resolution and frame rate to the source and selected stream configuration; do not upscale a low-resolution file just to meet a number. See YouTube encoder settings.
- Use an output bitrate with headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom and testing with representative movement and audio. Its guidance says, “Have enough bandwidth: The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” Check the VPS’s sustained outbound rate and YouTube’s stream-health indicator together; a nominal port rate alone is not enough. - Run the encoder under a supervisor. Use a service manager such as systemd or another process supervisor so the job can start after a reboot and restart after a process failure. Store the stream key in a protected environment file or secret store with restricted permissions; do not expose it in command history, publicly readable unit files, or logs.
- Watch a test broadcast before leaving it unattended. Confirm that video and audio are present, the picture is not frozen, the stream health is acceptable, and the source loops at the intended point. Observe CPU, memory, disk, network transfer, and encoder logs. Repeat after changing the file, bitrate, region, or VPS plan.
FFmpeg example for looping and re-encoding
This example targets 1080p30 H.264 at the YouTube-recommended 5 Mbps video bitrate. With audio and overhead, provision more than 5 Mbps of sustained outbound capacity; a 20% margin over the total stream bitrate is the safer target. The command uses a two-second GOP at 30 fps, CBR-style rate controls, and RTMPS:

Use the exact RTMPS server URL and stream key supplied in Live Control Room; the URL shown is a placeholder, not a working endpoint. This command forces a 1920Ă—1080 canvas and can upscale smaller sources. Remove or adjust the scale/pad filter if you want to preserve the source dimensions. If the source already has compliant encoded tracks and you want to copy rather than re-encode, use a separately tested stream-copy workflow; it will not fix incompatible codecs or output characteristics automatically.

Archive behavior
YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous broadcast has the same archive behavior as a shorter event: confirm YouTube’s current handling and decide whether to end, restart, or schedule long broadcasts around your archive needs. Copyright and reused content
Only stream content for which you hold the necessary rights or permissions. A video being prerecorded, publicly available, or already on your channel does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Copyright compliance and monetization eligibility are distinct questions; review YouTube’s current policies for the channel and material rather than assuming that an uninterrupted stream is eligible.

Test and troubleshoot before relying on the VPS
