You can use OBS to send a video and audio feed to YouTube, and use Windows automation to launch OBS—but automation alone does not make one broadcast run indefinitely. First confirm the channel can livestream, configure OBS and YouTube, test the feed, and verify YouTube’s broadcast state. OBS documents a --startstreaming launch option; exact AutoHotkey code is not included here because its syntax and version compatibility need to be checked against current AutoHotkey documentation.
What “continuous” means with OBS and YouTube
OBS is the encoder: it sends video and audio to YouTube using the stream URL and key. YouTube manages the broadcast that viewers see. Starting OBS or seeing an encoder connection does not, by itself, prove that the viewer-facing broadcast is live. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings affect that behavior, so check the Live Control Room before relying on unattended operation. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains those controls.
A PC-based setup also depends on the PC, power, software, and internet connection staying available. Reconnect settings can help after some disconnections, but cannot guarantee recovery from an outage, crash, shutdown, ended broadcast, or platform restriction. Treat “continuous” as a goal that needs monitoring and a recovery plan, not a promise that a single OBS session will run forever.
Check YouTube Live eligibility first
YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days, and meet YouTube’s minimum age rule to livestream. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and enable live streaming before configuring automation.

Connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream
- Create or choose the stream: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create an encoder stream or select one you have already set up. Copy its stream URL and stream key.
- Protect the key: Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or shared document. If someone else obtains it, reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Configure OBS: In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if available, then connect the account or enter the server URL and key provided for the YouTube stream.
- Build the scene: Add the sources the broadcast needs, such as a video capture source, media source, display capture, microphone, or other audio input. Check the OBS audio meters and confirm the intended audio devices are selected.
- Set output quality: Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on what the computer can encode and the internet connection can reliably upload. If you are new to OBS, start with its Auto-Configuration Wizard, which considers hardware and network conditions.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Use the bitrate and resolution guidance for your chosen output rather than assuming the highest setting is always best; the connection must sustain the upload reliably. YouTube transcodes the incoming livestream into formats for different viewers and devices. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Test the stream before automating it
- Start OBS manually and confirm that the correct scene, video motion, and audio are present.
- Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes before the real stream.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Test actual movement and sound, not just a still image or silent scene.
- Confirm whether YouTube is set to auto-start and auto-stop the broadcast. Verify the viewer-facing state in Live Control Room before announcing the stream.
Use OBS’s Quick Start Guide for its setup workflow, and YouTube’s live streaming tips for stream monitoring guidance.

Use OBS launch automation, then add AutoHotkey only if needed
Start OBS with its documented launch option
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. Its launch-parameter guidance also covers options such as --startrecording and profile or scene selection. For Windows scheduled or automated launches, OBS advises setting the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. The launch-parameter page is dated 2021, so verify behavior against the OBS version installed before relying on it.
Use the OBS Launch Parameters documentation for the exact command-line details. Test the launch manually first, with OBS closed, and confirm both that the intended profile and scene load and that the YouTube stream reaches the expected state.

Keep AutoHotkey optional
AutoHotkey can be an orchestration layer for starting a process or performing a user action, but exact script syntax depends on the AutoHotkey version. No verified AutoHotkey code sample is provided here. Before writing or deploying a script, check the current official documentation for your installed version. Avoid brittle automation that repeatedly clicks fixed screen coordinates without checking whether the expected window or state is present.
Choose what should happen after OBS starts
| Approach | What it does | Preview and confirmation | Disconnects and duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start OBS manually | You start the encoder yourself; YouTube’s broadcast settings determine whether the broadcast starts automatically or needs a separate action. | You can inspect OBS and the YouTube preview before viewers see the stream. | OBS reconnect settings may help after some interruptions, but do not guarantee recovery. Duration and archiving depend on YouTube’s handling. |
| Launch OBS with a command or scheduled task | OBS’s documented --startstreaming option starts streaming from OBS. It does not establish that YouTube’s viewer-facing broadcast is live in every configuration. |
Test the launch and check Live Control Room; do not assume the process starting is sufficient confirmation. | Automation cannot fix machine, power, network, or platform failures. You still need monitoring and a recovery plan. |
| Schedule or configure the YouTube broadcast | YouTube’s Live Control Room and auto-start/auto-stop settings control broadcast behavior alongside the encoder feed. | Use the preview and confirm the broadcast state in Live Control Room. | YouTube’s documented archive rule says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Verify current platform handling for longer-running plans. |
These approaches can be combined, but none guarantees unattended uptime. For rules and current controls, consult YouTube’s live stream settings guide and encoder setup guidance.

Plan around monitoring, recovery, and archive limits
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an under-12-hour archive rule, not evidence that every longer stream is impossible or that it will be archived the same way. Verify YouTube’s current handling for the duration you intend to run, and consider recurring scheduled broadcasts or a dedicated continuous-stream service if the setup needs to operate beyond a single broadcast.
Keep a person or process responsible for checking audio, video, stream health, and the YouTube broadcast state. OBS automatic reconnect can be useful, but it is not a recovery guarantee. Automation cannot correct an internet outage, computer crash, thermal shutdown, power loss, a YouTube restriction, or copyright or policy action.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS connects, but viewers do not see a live broadcast | YouTube’s broadcast has not started, or auto-start is configured differently than expected. | Open Live Control Room, inspect auto-start/auto-stop settings, and confirm the broadcast state and preview. |
| Stream is unstable or stream health is poor | The chosen bitrate or quality exceeds reliable upload capacity, or the network is fluctuating. | Reduce output demands to a level the connection can sustain; test upload bitrate and monitor stream health. |
| Video appears, but sound is missing or wrong | OBS is using the wrong audio device, or the intended source is not active. | Check the selected devices and audio meters in OBS, then repeat a test that includes actual sound. |
| OBS starts, but the expected scene or profile is not loaded | The launch configuration or working directory is incorrect. | Test the launch parameters manually, check the selected profile and scene options, and set the Windows working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. |
| The stream stops after a disconnection | Reconnect attempts may not succeed, or the broadcast may have ended. | Check OBS connection state and YouTube Live Control Room; restart the encoder or broadcast as appropriate. Do not assume reconnect restored the viewer-facing stream. |
| The stream key is exposed | A key appeared in a script, screenshot, log, or shared material. | Reset the key in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement. |
Copyright and content checks for documentary streams
A technically healthy encoder feed does not establish that the content is cleared for livestreaming. Before looping or broadcasting documentaries, confirm that you have the necessary rights to the video, music, narration, photographs, and other material, and follow YouTube’s policies. Do not treat a test stream, a private link, or automation as an exception to copyright or platform rules.
